I'm not a huge fan but a latter-day appreciator of their music. I only have one of their albums which is a compilation but it has some good songs. I think of those I've heard, I like 'Peg' and 'Hey Nineteen' the most. 'Deacon Blues' is a good song but it could do with being a little shorter!

Oh wow, gave me such a yen to add them to my playlist. Can’t Buy a Thrill is my favourite album, and Dirty Work probably my favourite track.
Thinking of it, it would be on my Desert Island discs. So full of heartbreak and pathos.

Thanks Op.

Had completely forgotten Rikki don't loose that number. Have just listened to it again and it's just so well screwed together. Even the recording has stood the test of time.

Hugely enjoy Steely Dan but should probably educate myself with some albums - this thread has inspired me to do so, so thanks! I was surprised and amused when I read Naked Lunch by William S Burroughs to find that Steely Dan is the name of a dildo and that's what they named themselves after 😂

NellieJean · Yesterday 11:58

Just to lower the tone does anyone know what a steely Dan is.

SerendipityCat · Yesterday 12:11

Yes, massive fan here, ever since I heard "Reelin' In The Years" when I was a teenager. I still listen to them, along with Donald Fagen's solo stuff - any "Nightfly" fans here?

BodaciousCowboy · Yesterday 12:16

Massive fan. Peerless. I was fortunate enough to see them live twice when Walter Becker was still alive. What a privilege it was. Gaucho is my favourite SD album.

Also huge fan, (Citizen Steely Dan, CD Box set is excellent) I saw them play live a couple of times, too late now :-(
However, there's a ridiculously good tribute band called "Simply Dan " Well worth seeing. (also do Pink Floyd)

Wouldn't call myself their greatest fan but I certainly like them!

Gilltthepill · Yesterday 15:12

Can’t Buy A Thrill is one of my favourite albums ever.

Love Steely Dan. Got their greatest hits on repeat for when I go on long drives

ageingdisgracefully · Yesterday 15:28

Been a fan for decades, since hearing FM on a jukebox. They're absolute legends and in a class of their own. I go to see tribute bands Simply Dan and Nearly Dan when I can. Aja is my favourite. The perfectionism is insane. Almost saw them again in Manchester two years ago (supporting the Eagles) but they dropped out at last minute. I'll never get to see them again now.

Rick Beato (watch on YouTube) has interviewed many musicians who've worked with SD - Denny Dias, Skunk Baxter, Larry Carlton, Dean Parks, Michael Omartian, Michael MacDonald. Worth a watch.

Yes love the nightfly especially new frontier, the SD album two against nature from 2000 is great as well

There is a documentary on Sky called Yacht Rock which is worth watching.

TheTecknician · Yesterday 18:45

Doesn't DF object to Steely Dan being grouped under the term 'Yacht Rock'?

OP posts:
SqueakyFromme · Yesterday 18:51

@TheTecknician Probably ! But I do understand that term would be linked to them, it’s not a bad thing, but him and Walter were such talented musicians, and intellectuals he probably thinks it’s trite. Have you seen the making of Peg video where he says ‘sorry Michael’ when he’s at the mix desk and he’s separated Michael’s vocal ? It’s such a good watch .

I've just looked at a list of Yacht Rock bands and musicians on Wikipedia. It's very extensive and includes the likes of Robert Palmer and John Denver - I'm not sure I agree with either of those. Not that it matters! I suppose having the King of YR - Michael McDonald - guesting on your records is bound to lend YR credence.

SqueakyFromme · Yesterday 18:57

John Denver ? I would have categorised as country.

SqueakyFromme · Yesterday 18:58

@TheTecknician why my post has THREE links in Ive no idea - sorry

TheTecknician · Yesterday 18:59

@SqueakyFromme Agreed. Thank God I'm A Country Boy kind of underlines this!
