Middle of the night musings.

i would have said the late Queen would have been recognised in the most countries around the world but not sure who would now. Maybe Trump?

Anyone I'm forgetting?

Interestingly enough, whilst Xi is obviously extremely well-known throughout China, his cousin is actually much better known across the whole globe.

That photo comparison would be censored and blocked in China. Apparently Xi is quite sensitive to the comparison. Bless.

villanova · 30/05/2026 14:07

What about The Rock/ Dwayne Johnson, only because he's starred in a number of Chinese-financed films (e.g. Skyscraper) so will have good recognition in Asia as well as the west?

corlan · 30/05/2026 14:07

Jackie Chan's a good candidate.

Natasha Sparaks for sure!

I don’t know who that is

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 30/05/2026 14:10

The Pope?

I’ll be honest I wouldn’t know what the pope looks like

Gwenhwyfar · 30/05/2026 14:13

StephQ1 · 30/05/2026 10:36

If the pope walked into your local pub in normal clothes I doubt hardly anyone would recognise him.

I wouldn't have a clue.

Empress13 · 30/05/2026 14:14

Who the fook is Natasha Sparaks? Googled and still none the wiser

Gwenhwyfar · 30/05/2026 14:15

My first thoughts were Madonna and Michael Jackson, but one of them is of course dead now even though that didn't stop someone suggesting him.

I don't think Britney Spears is that identifiable and I don't agree about any of the footballers. If I don't recognise them as a westerner, then someone in a more isolated place is unlikely to know them too.

J K Rowling? Her books have sold all over the world.

Her books yes, but her face is not so famous outside her fans and Twitter.

Vitrolinsanity · 30/05/2026 11:24

Kermit
Trump
David Beckham
Princess of Wales

I am a catholics and I reckon I would not recognise the Pope if he stood next to me without his robes and hat.

By Princess of Wales, you mean Kate? I don't think she's that famous outside of Europe and the English-speaking world. Diana was more famous.

AgnesMcDoo · 30/05/2026 14:20

girliepop · 30/05/2026 10:35

MadonnA
Britney Spears
Leonardo decaprio
Taylor Swift

My kids (17 and 14) wouldn’t recognise or know who the first 3 on that list are

I’m going with Trump and the Pope

Seriously? You don’t watch the news, or read newspapers and magazines?

notatinydancer · 30/05/2026 14:25

SnappyUmberLion · 30/05/2026 10:33

Ronaldo or Messi.

I wouldn’t know either of those if I fell over them.

Allseeingallknowing · 30/05/2026 14:26

I don’t think most would regard her as that famous!

I do but i wouldnt recognise him. Whilst i may see snippets i dont pay that much attention. Id recognize basically all other names mentioned probably before him or the Dalai Lama and the elusive Natasha Sparak

Raciney · 30/05/2026 14:29

@NatashaSparaks is apparently on the thread now so she can enlighten you herself!

He's quite a new pope and he doesn't really appear in magazines.
People might recognise the uniform, but his face?

Moveoverdarlin · 30/05/2026 14:31

Trump, Taylor Swift, Ronaldo.

OrangeJellySnakes · 30/05/2026 14:40

Obama maybe?

user1492757084 · 30/05/2026 14:41

King Charles
Trump
Dolly Parton
Elizabeth Hurley
Colin Firth
Prince William
Elton John
Harry Potter
Jerry Hall
David Attenborough
Zara Tindall
Emma Thompson

Football is pretty global in its reach. I’ve certainly been in remote places in Africa and the ME and found DH having ardent conversations about Arsenal with randoms he doesn’t share a language with.

But there are over a billion Catholics. There'll be photos, icons and shrines of/to him in every Catholic church and at least half the Catholic households.

Lot of western bias in this thread. The most recognisable person to the most amount of people is probably someone we've never heard of.

The total population of Europe and North America add up to about 1.4 billion. In a world of 8bn, I doubt it's William & Kate or Britney Spears (my own teenagers would struggle to recognise Britney).

ETA Ronaldo IS a good shout though.

Edited

Ronaldo is Portuguese and of course that immediately opens up the Brazilian market. He played for Real Madrid, Manchester Utd and Juventus of Italy - three of the biggest clubs in the world. Of course Real Madrid made him famous in South America.
