Middle of the night musings.

i would have said the late Queen would have been recognised in the most countries around the world but not sure who would now. Maybe Trump?

Anyone I'm forgetting?

Oh shit sorry yes!
But he’s definitely recognise the world over. I’ve travelled a lot - more than most. And he’s the guy everyone knows in all cultures 💛

Living is harder. I’d like not to say the orange lunatic. I’ll have a think!

If Marley were alive and down my pub I wouldn’t recognise him. Bizarre suggestion

Namechangedforthis25 · 01/06/2026 00:03

Ronaldo

there were literally studies done in Amazonian rainforests.

I have family from a very remote part of a small Asian country - and they all recognised Ronaldo.

would not immediately recognise trump though - because they don’t want US/UK/Western TV. They watch their local tv.

but football - well every boy or man of every age in Asia is obsessed with that.

so it’s Ronaldo.

and no it’s not Taylor swift or any of the other music stars - yes some people might know the music but they are not watching Western Tv!

when the Queen was alive - it may have been her due to the Commonwealth.

Nope. Nothing. Just redirects me to a MN post about him.

If you click the link to his Wikipedia page?

I’ve not heard of Johnny Halliday. Googled him and nothing. Is it AI?

What search engine are you using, Ask Jeeves? I only heard of him when I lived in Switzerland but googling him will come up with a load of stuff, but you know that don’t you? 😏😂

Think @Raciney couldn’t find any public information about JH because she spelt his surname wrong - it’s Hallyday and not Halliday.

A great many are; but I don't see how you can blanket state that every single one is. Asia is home to half of the people in the world, who are all individuals - they aren't just one big homogenous blob.

Maybe a Kardashian? Not sure I could identify any of them in a lineup tho

I thought of those trollops as well. Don't know if they are popular in Africa.... I know certain countries in Asia watch them.....

Eh? Is this keeping the principle of the Natasha Sparaks joke going further still?

If you search for the slightly wrong spelling of JH's name, it just assumes that you got it a bit wrong and gives you the same info automatically - just like if you search for 'Tayler Swift', 'Micheal Jackson' or 'Renaldo'.

I spelt it wrong as well. It still came up because I had the nous to realise I’d mispelt it and so did Google. I think @Raciney was messing about 😁

Me too. All I know is he’s a highly paid footballer. No idea what he looks like, who he plays for or what nationality he is. Not trying to be disparaging of him as obviously millions of people know exactly who he is. My football knowledge pretty much begins and ends with David Beckham.

I suppose if you have no interest in football and dont really give a monkeys, I dont know who messi is either but I know Ronaldo was popular when he was a teen and I was a teen around same time.
I also enjoyed the video where he dressed as a slightly overweight bearded man undercover and played football in the middle if a busy town centre and then he revealed who he was. Other than that I have zero interest in football .

Yodellayhehoo · 01/06/2026 09:58

Also thought of another 2.

Muhammed Ali. Maybe some Asian boxers he fought against.

Gordon ramsay. He's popular around the globe and cooks with people of all ethnicities and nationalities.

Paperbackwrither · 01/06/2026 09:58

Most of India has no interest in football. That's 1 billion people.

That’s what I thought too - they’re much more into cricket as a country, aren’t they?

Oh maybe lolol

George Clooney? When GC raised concerns about the then president Biden he said the red flag was that he didn't recognise him.

ChillDanceMusic · 01/06/2026 12:31

Famous football players are followed world wide

Ronaldo, Messi

The late Queen Elizabeth

Elon Musk

I've vaguely heard of Mr Beast - I gather he's a YouTuber who (I presume) makes videos in the English language?

If I, as a native English speaker, don't know any more than that about him and wouldn't have a clue what he looks like, I'm guessing that there must be billions of people across the world who don't have English as their native language, who would know even less about him than I do.

ChillDanceMusic · 01/06/2026 13:43

Due to ongoing wars - Trump

Mr Beast is extremely popular with non-native English speakers (subtitles are available). He has almost half a billion Youtube subscribers. He is incredibly famous - and I say this as someone who has lived in places where almost nobody speaks English, but anyone around 25 or under would recognise him.

Not as globally recognised as Trump/Messi/Ronaldo, but the divide between people who recognise him and people who don't is generational rather than linguistic.

What? That's not true at all. Football is very popular in India - it's second only to cricket, estimated followers of about 300 million - so around 1/3 of the population.
