Middle of the night musings.

i would have said the late Queen would have been recognised in the most countries around the world but not sure who would now. Maybe Trump?

Anyone I'm forgetting?

Oh, definitely Johnny Halliday. Or maybe Charles Aznavour. Or Yves Montand. From Belgium there’s The Singing Nun and Plastic Bertrand.

World beaters, all. They would be known from Mongolia to Peru, defo.

My mentioning Johnny Halliday was to illustrate you can be very famous in certain areas but more or less unheard of outside them so would not be globally known like, say, Trump. You sound sarcastic, if so it’s misplaced. It was in relation to people mentioning countries like China because of their population, but that doesn’t make them worldwide known, which is what’s in the thread title.

Yes, I understood you. And I was being sarcastic. But in general, not about your post. So, my apologies to you.

I do find the Francosphere funny though. They have a worldview of themselves and their culture that makes even the most nationalistic and pompous Brit look enlightened and open-minded.

I think he would have had a cult following here in the UK if anything, but certainly wasn’t anywhere near a household name. Which shows you can be very famous in concentrated parts of the world but not the world at large. Only a few get true global recognition, and it’s often for being a tyrant/despot.

Well I've heard of him and I am not part of a cult. I thought he was a well known singer. Maybe I came across him via French lessons too!

The Bourne Identity - Matt Damon

Rod Stewart

James bond - Daniel Craig

I do find it strange people suggesting people known only, just about, in the UK and US without thinking about the rest of the world

for those who don’t know who Ronaldo is, here’s a picture. I do love Ronaldo and think he’s best known in the world. They did him a wrong here

A Cult following of a singer doesn’t mean you’re part of an actual cult.

Raciney · 31/05/2026 22:07

I’ve not heard of Johnny Halliday. Googled him and nothing. Is it AI?

How bored are they?!

No lol. And it’s Johnny ‘Hallyday’, not Halliday.

FKAT · 31/05/2026 22:27

We have been misspelling Johnny

I strongly recommend L'Homme Du Train - one of the last films he made.

Oh shit sorry yes!
But he’s definitely recognise the world over. I’ve travelled a lot - more than most. And he’s the guy everyone knows in all cultures 💛

Living is harder. I’d like not to say the orange lunatic. I’ll have a think!

King Charles
Trump
Dolly Parton
Elizabeth Hurley
Colin Firth
Prince William
Elton John
Harry Potter
Jerry Hall
David Attenborough
Zara Tindall
Emma Thompson

Apart from Trump, and to a lesser extent King Charles, most of the world wouldn't know who these people are! Europe is only around 9% of the world population and North America around 8%. You need someone who is recognised in Asia (62%) and Africa (20%).

SwirlyGates · 31/05/2026 22:49

I think "the Pope" is cheating a bit actually. We are not recognising the person but the uniform, which is unique in the world.

bumptybum · 31/05/2026 22:53

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 30/05/2026 10:35

Trump and the Pope would be in the running but I suspect the most likely answer could be someone from the Asian continent. More than half the population of the world is in Asia. China has something like 5 times the population of the US. Xi Jinping, the leader in China has to be in with a shout.

Yes but they would likely recognise Trump as well

StrictlyCoffee · 31/05/2026 22:55

Trump
Taylor Swift

CypressGrove · 31/05/2026 22:58

I suspect it was Ronaldo a few years back but it would be Trump now.

Even if was most famous people recognisde by UK citizens Zara tindall is a weird shout!
Isn't she some cousin to the king of something remote?

Nope. Nothing. Just redirects me to a MN post about him.
