Ideas for making smoked fish suppers a bit more interesting

I have smoked fish for dinner tonight, usually serve baby potatoes and peas with it. Getting a bit fed up of serving it that way anyone have any ideas how I can make smoked fish more interesting?

Fish pie - make a white sauce, fold chunks of fish through it, put in dish and top with mashed potato with grated cheese on top. Bake in oven until golden. Serve with green veg.

Will go with this tonight fits the bill for comfort food.

Thanks all much appreciated

I used to do smoked haddock with a cheese sauce, cabbage and mashed potato a lot! But I've also made kedgeree and a smoked haddock and cheese souffle, which was delicious with salad.

I always use smoked haddock with unsmoked cod in fish pie.

Arnold Bennett omlette... For 4
Gently simmer 300g smoked haddock in 150ml milk for 5 mins. Remove from pan (save the milk), flake the fish into a small bowl, add about 3 level tbsp cream fraiche and some chopped chives, if you have them, or chopped parsley, Mix all together.
Mix 5 or 6 eggs seasoned with a 2 tbsp of the fishy milk and S&P as when making any omlette. Heat a little oil+butter in a 9" frying pan, then pour in the eggs. Stir gently until you can see they're starting to firm up around the edges. Spoon the haddock mixture all over the top off the omlette. Peep underneath the omlette with a spatula to see if it's got to the lightly browned stage.
Take it off the heat and sprinkle over 2 - 3 tbsp grated parmesan.
Pop it under the grill for 2-3 minutes (keeping the pan handle out of the heat obviously) until top is set and lightly golden.

Fish pie hit the spot. I made parsley sauce for inside the pie and served a massive mumsnet salad on the side Grin I have basa for dinner tomorrow night, will try another one of these fabulous suggestions.

I beer batter mine, fry and serve with homemade chips sometimes

Gousto have some lovely basa recipes. You can see the ingredients list and recipe on their website without signing up or ordering any meal boxes. We get quite a lot of their basa recipe in our boxes (sometimes smoked other times not) never been disappointed.

Smoked fish can be really versatile! Some ideas that hopefully help:

  • flake it through pasta with crème fraîche, capers and lemon
  • fishcakes with leftover mash and freeze half
  • serve on blinis with horseradish cream
... I also love chowder with cream and sweetcorn in.

Really depends on what you have in your fridge ?

I've been building a family app that has a pantry feature — you log what's in your kitchen and it suggests what you can make with it tonight.
Smoked fish nights are exactly the use case that inspired it! Still in early beta if anyone's curious.

I like the sound of this. How do you fry? I've never deep fried anything in my life thanks to those safety adverts back in the day.

If I fry battered fish I just do it in a deep frying pan with a good glug of oil. No need to completely submerge the fish.

Also remember chip pan fire safety adverts!
