Ideas for making smoked fish suppers a bit more interesting

I have smoked fish for dinner tonight, usually serve baby potatoes and peas with it. Getting a bit fed up of serving it that way anyone have any ideas how I can make smoked fish more interesting?

As kedgeree?

I like smoked haddock risotto.

Or smoked haddock gratin. Layers from the bottom up, in an oven proof dish; wilted spinach, smoked haddock, slices of tomato, a smear of creme fraiche, grated gouda or gruyere cheese. Into the oven, 180c, for about 20-25 mins. Then under the grill for a few mins to bubble the cheese on top. We have this with green beans and boiled potatoes.

Pasta with lemon and capers, parsley and flaked fish through it. Served with green beans.

Also kedgeree

Look up recipes for Arbroath smokies. There are loads online. Things like crepes, pâté, gratin, fish cakes, pies, soup, omelettes and lots more.

On Mash with a poached egg on top - yum!!

For some reason Nigel Slater calls this a pudding, but it's a soufflé as far as I can work out.

It works beautifully with any smoked fish and benefits from a sharp green salad alongside it. It's surprising easy!

These all sound really yummy. I was thinking along the lines of kedgeree but dh doesn't like the curry flavours he just likes simple food really.

Fish pie - make a white sauce, fold chunks of fish through it, put in dish and top with mashed potato with grated cheese on top. Bake in oven until golden. Serve with green veg.

I just don't put curry powder into my kedgeree - just fish, rice, boiled egg and lots of butter and pepper.

If DH likes simple things, what about serving some parsley sauce with it at least?

Mulledjuice · 28/04/2026 17:37

I love smoked mackerel on rye or granary toast with roasted tomatoes + spinach + sesame + balsamic dressing (leave out the dressing + just do a squeeze of lemon if that's too wild for you guys)

Myfridgeiscool · 28/04/2026 17:39

Smoked haddock with crisp slices of chorizo on the top, buttery mash and samphire.

Do you add in anything like onion or other flavours?

I make the Delia smith kedgeree which has onion in and then parsley and lemon juice at the end. I do love plenty of curry flavours in it though but I’m sure the lemon and parsley would help if you’re not adding this.
Another favourite is smoked haddock on mash with wholegrain mustard in, spinach and a poached egg on top.

This is what I was going to suggest! A staple in our house when I was growing up.
