Sandwich making buttering the bread

snowibunni · 28/04/2026 08:22

I follow Frankie Parker on Instagram - she basically makes massive sandwiches for her boyfriends lunch.

But three things

  1. She doesn't use a bread knife to cut the bread she uses a massive carving knife.
  2. She uses said carving knife to spread the butter.

Think these two things are basically her 'hook' so whilst I wouldn't do it like that I can shrug and think fine.

The third thing I cannot fathom.

She will take two slices of bread and rather than opening them out like a book and putting the spread on the two faces she will have the two slices stacked as the come out of the packet of bread/as cut, butter the top slice, move that out of the way and then butter the next slice. So the two buttered sides no longer fit together seemlessly. If it was standard square loaf type bread I could sort of understand but very often it's an artisan knobbly bread and for me it just doesn't work. And can't imagine it working for anyone.

I've not messaged her and told her she's doing it wrong (because I'm not a twat) , but it does give me stress!

How do others butter their bread?

The things people get a following for on Instagram never ceases to amaze me!😄

To answer your question, I normally use a table knife or butter knife, and I do align the slices so they fit together.

@coolwind this is the chat board, where people, chat.

I did just look her up, the sandwich is massive, he must have a jaw than unhinges.

I also open bread out like a book so that the two slices fit back together like they did in the packaging. Considering the amount of food per layer I would be giving it all a mayo drizzle mid way through.

The chef's knife to butter the bread is not for me, we use a dinner knife. I remember as a child my very posh friend having block butter on the worktop in a butter dish with a specific butter knife.

That is just performative sandwich making normal people just use a butter knife silly woman 😀 I saw a chef maybe jamie oliver do the same thing but cut it with the giant knife on a slate the noise was horrific!

I don't know why you are getting such a hard time ! People can be far too serious.

TerracottaBowl · 28/04/2026 08:36

Does her boyfriend have some disability that prevents him from making his own giant sandwiches?

snowibunni · 28/04/2026 08:39

@PlateauDeChamp

He likely deconstructs the sandwich before he eats it unless he has unhingeable jaws.

Either that or he's imaginary and she just has a massive tax deductable shopping bill or he bins it and nips to Greggs and tells her her sandwich was lovely.

Shameless. Maybe the first series. Butter the bread with a spoon. And further instructions that I can't remember.. perhaps butter the edges. Dunno.

snowibunni · 28/04/2026 08:45

@Lomonalddefinately performative. she has over 100k followers so she must be tapping into some sort of need. She does speak about her diabetes and early menopause

I also follow whatnaveats(same management as Frankie) and she basically just plates up her food and stands at her kitchen counter and comments on it. I am just shouting, just sit and eat with your family.

I'm not sure he exists. Have seen dogs, brother, dad and gran but not boyfriend. Maybe he's shy.

Oh gosh yes, butter up to edges - to be fair she does tend to do that with her massive knife.

I'm on a diet, and when I think about my Instagram feed there is a lot of food stuff in there - baked potatoes, cake makers, crunchy moms, sandwich shops, roast potato fanatics, snackers, chefs/ cooks

Mixed in with loads of other stuff granted.

You are going to hate ne.
Make 3 sandwiches most mornings.
Take 6 slices of bread out of the presliced packet.

Stack in piles of 2. Butter top slice of each pile. Add fillings ontop of butter. Slide bottom slice out, and put on top - no butter.

Buttered using a table knife, BTW

Then use a vegetable knife to cut one sandwich into triangles for DS2, and the other into rectangles for me and DS1.

lljkk · 28/04/2026 08:52

Butter on sandwich bread is disgusting, imho, and rest is "who cares"

beasmithwentworth · 28/04/2026 08:52

I like her. Yes my next question was ‘have we ever seen the boyfriend?’ But you have just answered my question.

I like how she’s very ‘low key’ about everything .. ie ‘oh you are meant to use x but I didn’t have any in so I’m just using this’ (though it seems to happen in every reel so maybe that’s another conscious hook)

Though she didn’t have any butter the other week and so ‘just used mayo’ …. My mouth was getting dry just watching it!

youalright · 28/04/2026 08:53

I'm not judging as I watch videos of a bloke who cleans pools for a living but rage bait videos get more engagement then any other just like some of the threads on here.

PlateauDeChamp · 28/04/2026 08:54

@snowibunni the sandwich I saw her making did look good. Just too much filling for me, I like to pretend I am ladylike and that cannot be done whilst scoffing a giant sandwich. I think anyone seeing that man's sandwich will want one, it is well crafted.

My friend's Dh was a joiner and did some work at my other friend's house. She fed him lunch and he came home raving about the ham sandwich he had. Apparently his wife just butters the bread, slaps two slices of ham on, flat, and some mayo. My other friend "ruffled" the ham, added salad and mayo and he said it was really posh! Grin He said he felt like he had gone to a deli. My friend then started ruffling the ham to give it depth.

For lunch today I will be having chicken salad and I mix in some black grapes for that lovely sweetness. No bread as much as I love it. I love watching people make food especially if they are copying someone else. The Plant Slant is my favourite.

Nolongera · 28/04/2026 08:55

I only butter one side of the bread as I am so lazy and it's all going straight in my cake hole.

Might start an Instagram account, although I have no idea how it works.

Plump82 · 28/04/2026 08:57

Yeah the way she butters the slices annoys me but I actually tried buttering bread with a really sharp knife and it was surprised at how easy it buttered it! Her boyfriend does exist as she filmed them on a weekend away and there was a little glimpse of him on that!
