Where do you keep your handbag?

This is a random question but where do people keep their handbags when you are at home? I'm in a small terrace so space is somewhat lacking. I normally end up keeping my handbag at the bottom of the stairs by the front door or beside the back door at the kitchen (to prompt myself to remember what I need when I'm heading out) but it just looks so cluttered and gets in the way especially if it's there for a couple of days.

I don't have a cloakroom, just a coat stand at the front door which my bag would be too heavy for.

Any other clever suggestions for where people keep theirs?

It literally lives in my car at all times, which I rarely lock. 😂 We live in the absolute middle of nowhere. In 15 years, never had anything stolen. You’d be hard pressed to find us.

I leave mine in the car too.

Brought it in for some reason one day, and went out the next. Only to discover I was out and my bag was still at home.

Mine are in a giant open fronted wooden dollhouse!
It has enough room for shoes on the bottom, scarves/hairbits/misc in the middle and bags on the top shelf!

RaraRachael · 19/04/2026 15:22

Mine is on the floor at the side of the couch.

Lulu1919 · 19/04/2026 15:23

Hangs off the end of banister at bottom of stairs

So does this mean you leave valuables in your car or do you remove keys, cards, phone, ID? Presumably uoy have to hide it so no one can see it's in your car too

My work bag is under my desk in spare room. I keep empty handbags in top of wardrobe and tend to use then empty each time as I don't carry much with me nowadays. Plus I change what bag I have depending on situation and what I'm wearing.

Hatty65 · 19/04/2026 15:41

I'm impressed that people have 'a place'!

Mine is dumped on the hall stand as I come in through the door. Or dropped on the dining room floor as I walk through. Or left on the kitchen worktop/table.

I don't really have a place, and quite often wander about downstairs looking for my handbag if I'm going out, need my phone, or want a tissue/something out of it.

Oxo01 · 19/04/2026 15:48

In my bedroom day and night.

I have a locked garage linked to the house, so the car is always locked away when I'm home.

I drive a lot for my job so I'm always carting this to and from the car. My bag just gets left in so it's always there when I head out.

Keys stay with me as I need them to get into house.

CleanSkin · 19/04/2026 16:30

Please think about security!
Never leave it within sight of people outside, same with house & vehicle keys. Thieves like quick-&-simple, it’s much more attractive than confronting a person (& the latter attracts much longer sentences).
Never, ever leave it in a vehicle especially if it is unlocked - no matter how remote you are, that just means help will take longer to arrive!
Please don’t think that having an integral garage makes a difference; it’s just a question of the level of observation & effort needed.

Depends really. Most are in their dust bags on shelves in one of the wardrobes, my everyday work bag i put in the cupboard under the stairs when i get home.

FettchYeSandbagges · 19/04/2026 16:46

Mine is on the floor in the lounge near the door into the hallway, and beside the socket where I charge my phone.

Isabelle70 · 19/04/2026 17:06

Mine sits on a dining room chair.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 19/04/2026 17:30

I keep mine in my bedroom and work rucksack on coat hook by stairs

Ginmonkeyagain · 19/04/2026 17:30

On my side of the bed, on the floor between the bed and bedside table.

I have done that ever since we had to evacuate in a emegency as the flats behind us caught fire and it took me a while to remrmber where my handbag was.

Arlanymor · 19/04/2026 17:38

I decant my keys, purse and make up bag/pouch (travel make up, main make up lives in my dressing table) into a small, lidded box on the lower shelf of my console table in hallway. Then everything else goes in its place - my iPad, my phone, notebook, water bottle etc go in my room, desk drawer, kitchen cupboard etc. Then the next day I start all over again. I tend to change my bag according to what I am doing and what shoes I am wearing, which varies a lot from one day to the next, and so I don't have one bag that I use all of the time. The bags themselves live in the wardrobe in the spare room. In an emergency I would just grab my phone and the little box! And maybe a dressing gown as I sleep in the nuddy...

IwanttoWFH · 19/04/2026 17:49

In my bedroom, next to my bed.

ButterYellowHair · 19/04/2026 19:48

I don’t own a handbag. My backpack is in the utility/pantry. Between kitchen and front door. If I were you I’d get a small stand to go next to the coat stand and put your bag there.

My best friend’s home was burgled while they were sleeping. Her mum’s handbag was stolen with purse credit cards and keys etc. it was in the hall where she left it when she came home from work. The police told to never leave a handbag downstairs unattended. I’ve remembered that from that day and always take my bag upstairs to the bedroom when I go to bed.

Would you rather the burglars came up to your befroo
to look for your handbag?

Allmarbleslost · 19/04/2026 20:52

fudgesmummy · 19/04/2026 21:06

On the coat hooks in the lobby next to the back door 🙂

It's funny people referencing this, I've always kept my bag and keys at the front door (though out of view) because i don't want an intruder coming further into the house where me and my kids are sleeping because that's usually when things go really wrong. I'm surprised the police told her that.

I also wish I was a coordinated enough person to match by bag to my shoes. I'd forget to transfer half my things so I just always have the same one until it dies and then I get a new one!
