What do you consider to be 'middle age'?

This is a question my mother-in-law has caused me to wonder. When I was younger I guess I always considered 'middle age' to be those over 50 however this would only be practical if most people lived to 100, this is not the case. So now I am pushing 40 I am wondering 'Am I middle aged?' My husband is 44 and considers himself to be middle aged. How old are you and at what age did you or will you consider yourself to be middle aged?

45 is the age that sprung to mind.

Edit - I'm 35

When is this something you need to come up with an answer for?

I can honestly say I've never given this a thought about myself or anyone else

Why does it matter?

Why does any conversation matter? It's just a discussion.

Sure, 30-40 is younger middle aged, 50-60 is older. They are all middle aged though. No longer just starting out, not yet winding down. In the middle.

I’m in my 20s so have no skin in the game personally but the wide consensus seems to be 40 being “middle aged.” Your pov is unusual.

In your model, you are missing a default adult ie an adult who is neither a young adult, nor middle aged, which 30 would represent.

Young and middle-aged people should be compared to a default adult age, not to each other. Otherwise, there’s no need for “young” or “middle-aged” descriptors.

40 to 60, although you could maybe push it to 45-65.

18-29 =- youth
30-44 =- prime of life
45-60 =-middle aged
61-78 =- ‘older’
79+ = elderly

that is my take on it.
I’m 53 in a few months

To me it’s a vague sort of ‘peri menopause time into the 60’s’ type era, well I mean that sort of age but obviously for both sexes. Like to me it’s a non specific age it just ‘is’ 🤷‍♀️

I’m 60, so I reckon 70 😉

And will you re-evaluate it to 80 a decade from now?! Smile
