Where the hell is my spoon?

I am feeling a bit haunted.
Short story: First world problem. Lost my spoon thrice - seemingly into thin air.

I got given a little cutlery set for my christening by my grandparents. Part of it was the perfect spoon. Not too big. Not too small with a little elephant on the handle.

When I was 18 I took it with me to university and it vanished. I put it down to stupidity taking it there and blamed my housemates. Although I never found it in their draws.

Fast forward and I am still thinking about that spoon and on my 44 birthday I put ‘elephant spoon’ into eBay and one pops up. I am so happy and I got my spoon back (although it probably wasn’t the exact one, obviously).

By 46, the elephant spoon vanished. Out the draw. I blamed my husband taking it to work based on no evidence, and strong denials.

Two weeks before my 47 birthday I go to this antiques place and ask the spoon man if he has one of the elephant spoons. He said no but I said ‘I just think it’s coming back to me’.

On my 47 birthday, husband had found another one on eBay and I got it for my birthday (again). It did come back to me like a Celine Dion song.

Two days ago I looked at the spoon in the draw but decided to go for another one. Today, it’s vanished. Out the draw. Thin air.

Does anyone know where my spoon has gone? Psychics? Scientists? People who have lost spoons?

I can’t believe it!!

Probably my parents' cutlery drawer. They have 63 teaspoons (yes, I counted). Apparently, this is where all the missing spoons go.

N.b. My parents claim they need a lot of teaspoons. For what, I am not sure.

Edited

😄

Sorry now, where's the elephant on that spoon? Is it etched into the handle or do I need to go to Specsavers. I'm on desktop so can't enlarge the pic. Glad you got one anyway. 😊

Edit.....I just got my phone out to enlarge the pic, and yes it's etched on the handle.

In the food waste bin with a tea bag still in it.

Keep checking on ebay and build up a supply.

Sweetbeansandmochi · 01/04/2026 20:05

In the jar of instant coffee

diddl · 01/04/2026 20:10

It's with a dish somewhere.

It's with a dish somewhere.

But....I always thought the dish ran away with the spoon...

I don’t know but I found my teddy bear one in my dd’s guide plate bag. Was a relief.

MummySleepDeprived · 01/04/2026 20:19

Get this new one in a frame or a some kind of display. Put it on a shelf and no one gets to use it

What is the point having it if you can’t use it?

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 01/04/2026 20:31

Oh! If it is snall could it be in the dishwasher filter cone?

Instant coffee? This is mumsnet. Maybe in my tin of whole beans from the deepest darkest jungles of Peru via Paddington station. But nope, not there.

Oh maybe.. I will go look there.

No it’s not in there .. husband just said he already checked it.

I wonder if this goes down as an unsolved mystery- thank you to all my fellow detectives. All’s well that ends well and now my internet controls are going to come on so I must bid you all good night. Keep your cutlery draws tight!! x

There is a great video about an Australian radio DJ and her beloved childhood duckie spoon. 🦆

Have you got a sugar caddy? Could it be in there?

anyone got lunch bags it might have gone into?

the messy drawer?

anyone used it to scoop out dried on washing powder from the drawer of the washing machine?

under the kitchen table?

in the dried cat food bag / tub?

anyone made overnight oats and took it to work?

What is the point having it if you can’t use it?

Because sometimes you want to save something social.... and after this many replacements someone in the family can't be trusted with special spoons!

The British Medical Journal published a study on the phenomenon of disappearing tea spoons :

The hot chocolate jar? In a half full Haagen Dasz container in the freezer?

this is frustrating

if you could only find one of the old spoons, you could set up a breeding programme with the new spoon and then you’d be set for life

Trusttheawesome · 01/04/2026 21:30

Sorry but you just said draw too many times. It’s a drawer. It is not a draw.
