Meningitis outbreak

I’m freaking out a bit

DD has been here all day after travelling from uni yesterday. Her housemate is really poorly and now I’ve just seen the news about the meningitis outbreak at her uni.

Her housemate is in the house on her own now - I’ve told DD to call the uni and let them know. Worried that DD has been here with us all day in case she gets sick

Spliffs?

IsthataNo · 18/03/2026 11:54

@Delatron well Wes streeting has said no such thing about stocks being diverted he said the NHS has plenty for their needs and we can get provate ones.

We know stocks are out and there are calls for supplies because much stuff will get caught up in the middle east issues

I’d imagine fairly common. I remember in my youth sharing cigarettes when out. “Want to go twos?” was a very common question back then! (Meaning to share one).

Really common at this age group - especially those that don't 'actually' vape (so don't have their own) but do vape when on a night out. (This is how it was explained to me by some teens)

Same with smoking years ago. All my friends who “didn’t smoke” suddenly wanted to share one or have a few pulls of mine! Rather than buying their own!

Delatron · 18/03/2026 12:13

Bit confused @IsthataNo
about your post on supplies. It was confirmed this morning that most pharmacies are running out and stocks are low. Hopefully the manufacturers will replenish.
I do think stocks are getting diverted to Kent.

Yes sharing vapes is very common.

I spoke to the private clinic this morning after my Boots appointment was cancelled and at 8:30 they gave me an appointment. by 10:30 I got another call to tell me that the appointment was being cancelled because "the government has diverted all supplies" and the vaccines that were supposed to arrive this morning have been pulled. So is exactly what Boots told me this morning too, and others have reported.

As a side point, year 13 pupils might well be 18. We are nearly 7 months into the year group.

As around 10% of us have the bacteria but don’t know but, there’s clearly minimal risk to
most people who they come into contact with. It must be close contact. Of course we can continue to travel etc - it’s not Covid.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 18/03/2026 13:18

My dad got it aged 50 and was definitely not in pubs and clubs or public transport. Just work in a factory so it’s definitely possible to catch anywhere. He was in hospital for 3 weeks. Nearly died and was dismissed by two docs before we got someone to listen.

This podcast is very informative and worth a listen.

We’ve also had our child’s men B vaccination cancelled this morning.

OhDear111 · 18/03/2026 13:38

@HeBeaverandSheBeaverNot a single health expert is saying that. It’s not possible to catch it anywhere. There are categories of people most likely to get it and how do you know what your dad did to get it? It’s a reportable illness but it’s not “in the air”. We need to listen to facts.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 18/03/2026 13:40

I know its not sitting in the air but my point Is anyone can get it at any age It’s rare but extremely serious when it happens And it’s often poo pooed by medical
staff and every hour makes the difference.

CurlewKate · 18/03/2026 13:55

Carla786 · 18/03/2026 11:07

Didn't a secondary school student catch it also? How did that happen?

Both of my children regularly went to Chemistry while in the 6th form.

Piggywaspushed · 18/03/2026 14:14

That could also have been viral meningitis. On the rise since Covid.

RollOnSunshine · 18/03/2026 09:25

Because the nightclub itself does not carry the infection. It makes no sense to close the business.

A carrier can pass on the illness in any given location.

Closing that nightclub is no more effective than closing any other nightclub in the area.

Edited

I think you'll find that quite a few are closed for business right now.

DallasMajor · 18/03/2026 14:41

A super spreader event.

So what are they saying, why was spreading so successful?

IsthataNo · 18/03/2026 15:16

I'm reading the times, BBC or daily mail so I can't remember which one and he said there were enough NHS stocks.
Obviously that was a lie or misinformation.

There are no jabs available today

IsthataNo · 18/03/2026 15:16

The owner of the nightclub wasn't given clear into either and said she had to push them for the extaxt dates

Kamek · 18/03/2026 16:01

Has anyone managed to get a private jab in the last couple of days? I booked with superdrug earlier and they called half an hour later to say they dont have any of the vaccine in stock anywhere

Piggywaspushed · 18/03/2026 16:21

Confirmed case at Canterbury Christ Church Uni now, too.

IsthataNo · 18/03/2026 16:25

@Kamek no.

IsthataNo · 18/03/2026 16:34

@Piggywaspushed uni open days and offer days are looming when six formers will be visiting uni all over UK so thousands from and to Kent.
I went to some last year and we were crammed into halls and speeches and then queuing to get into various accommodation and cafes etc

Piggywaspushed · 18/03/2026 16:38

The YP was at the nightclub.

Finbeginning · 18/03/2026 17:05

Worrying.
