I want to buy someone some gin as a gift but I don’t like it myself. What’s your favourite and why?

I don’t drink gin but like you @1apenny2apennyI think the Drumshanbo gin bottle is nice. Actually I think it’s really nice 😀

We love Lantic gin from our holidays in Cornwall. Not flavoured but slightly different botanicals in their summer/winter versions and are all delicious. Beautiful bottles too.

Galloway Distillery Hills and Harbour Gin. Lovely clean flavour in a beautiful bottle.

I second that.

Mermaid gin. And the bottle is beautiful.

Monkey 47 is my favourite.

Ophir is a lovely spicy gin.

I think Ophir is a marmite gin. it tastes of cardamon. If the OP knows her friend likes it then it is a good idea, but if her friend likes a juniper forward gin then she would be wasting her money.

I like gin. I like gin to taste of juniper. I dislike flavoured gins so always go for London dry style gins.

@Choux I would try and find out what style of gin your friend likes before you waste your money.

For a London Dry gin I can recommend no 3 London Dry gin

I also like Gordons, Bombay Sapphire, York gin and Tanqueray.

Silent Pool. The bottle is gorgeous. It’s also discounted at Waitrose at the moment.

Meant to post a photo!

What’s your favourite gin?
Topbird29 · 14/03/2026 20:28

I like tarquins or bloom (both available in supermarkets) and both have nice bottles. Otherwise sipsmith or haymans are good classic gins. Or we have a good local one - 6 oclock gin.

newN4me · 14/03/2026 20:34

I like gins that are more citrusy than floral. For me, Torbay, if you want something you wouldn’t get in a supermarket. Roku is nice and in most supermarkets, mermaid (or pink mermaid) if you want something in between.

Hayley1256 · 14/03/2026 20:38

Oh I have a few - Mermaid Gin, Gin Mare, Monkey 47, Brecon Beacons

mrslimpet · 14/03/2026 20:59

Salcombe Gin - can get this in M and S, my favourite - don’t buy a flavoured gin for a present.

MissRainbowBrite · 14/03/2026 21:00

One of the nicest gins I’ve ever tried is Raisthorpe Manor, it’s made in Yorkshire and is so smooth. It’s delicious.
A recommendation for Tarquins too.

NoIdeaWhyNow · 14/03/2026 22:05

Ealing Gin is a lovely small-batch gin and comes in a art-deco style bottle.

I like flavoured gins like rhubarb and ginger, but would likely only have 1 or 2 glasses (which is probably a good thing!). If getting a non flavoured one, maybe consider a smaller, microbrewery locally. They seem to be popping up everywhere.

A lot of flavoured gins are gin liqueurs, so sweetened and bearing little resemblance to actual gin.

I like lighter, more floral gins generally. My favourite is Larios 12. Buy it in duty free at the airport on the way home from Spain.

Warwick Gin has a lemony flavour from lemon verbena.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 14/03/2026 22:14

Ooh - just remembered: Tanqueray Jaipur is lovely and limey. Perfect in summer. The Sevilla one triggers my migraine although I love the flavour.

LameImpala · 14/03/2026 22:23

I used to love Ophir until I did a gin tasting where you smelled each botanical then tasted the gin. It just tastes like curry to me now!
I like Tanquaray and Sipsmith.

ChicoryChina · 14/03/2026 22:24

Brockmans gin has a very subtle blackberry flavour. Beautiful. Tanqueray Lime and the Sevilla both take a bit of a beating if you like fruity flavours.

Ophir is revolting to me. Gin spoilt.

Greenfinger1 · 14/03/2026 22:58

Monkey 47, tarquins, and, tanqueray No.10.

These are my top 3. In Cornwall, Tarquins all the way. At home it's a Tanqueray, and out for a special meal/social it's a Monkey 47 (if they have it).

MoreHairyThanScary · 14/03/2026 22:58

Bathtub gin is one of my absolute favourites, agree with other posters if they like gin don’t get the —awful— flavoured versions. Oh and a decent tonic makes a massive difference ( fever tree)

SpottyAlpaca · 14/03/2026 23:02

Tanqueray. The most traditional, juniper-forward gin on the market. It’s gin for people who like gin.

HippyChickMama · 14/03/2026 23:13

Tanqueray, Hendricks or Bloom are my favourites. I can’t stand flavoured gin, especially sweet flavours and I think Gordon’s tastes like hairspray
