I want to buy someone some gin as a gift but I don’t like it myself. What’s your favourite and why?

Aber Falls marmalade or Malfy orange for flavoured.

This. Expensive but exquisite

I second Rock Rose gin. It's not too expensive and you can buy it on offer sometimes in Sainsburys. It's a small distillery on the north coast of Scotland looking on to the Pentland Firth and they do various flavours using different botanicals rather than artificial flavourings.
I like the Art Nouveau bottle.
Rock Rose are not paying me for this.

Jawbox gin

A couple that haven't been mentioned - Stranger & Sons, and Monkey 47. However, although I like them I know a lot of people don't, so maybe not the best gift idea.

Nicecatneighbour · 14/03/2026 18:25

I'm no expert but like Tanquaray best. DH likes Roka or Botanist. Always with a frozen lime wedge and good tonic. Chin chin!

Ilovemyshed · 14/03/2026 18:26

Adnams Copper House with Fevertree Mediterranean tonic

Aparecium · 14/03/2026 18:33

Lakes Distillery.

Smells light and flowery, not strongly perfumed at all. So delicious I would drink it without tonic. Only I don’t, because I do not like drinking any spirits neat. But I do always have a sip before I add the tonic.

RonnSeall · 14/03/2026 18:39

Another vote for Roka Japanese gin and yes to a decent tonic in it!

RonnSeall · 14/03/2026 18:44

If it’s a present I wouldn’t buy anything too overpoweringly flavoured unless you definitely know your friend likes it.

I love gin but hate Ophir (too spiced) and the fruity ones!

GameOfJones · 14/03/2026 18:47

I agree not to buy a flavoured gin if they're a "normal" gin drinker. I know a lot like flavoured gins but I personally hate them and there are many like me that like a standard G&T but would hate a flavoured one.....they all taste so artificial to me.

My favourite one is Ramsbury gin (you can buy it in Waitrose) or I also like Mermaid gin from the Isle of Wight distillery (in the blue bottle....not the pink one!)

RoyalNight · 14/03/2026 18:49

Still GIN By Dre & Snoop.
Yes, I too laughed at the idea of these 2 rappers making gin, but it’s smooth, nuanced and currently part of the Amazon spring deals.
Thank me later.

Isle of Harris. Its delicious and comes in a beautiful bottle.

2nd this! Menorcan gin is also lovely with cloudy lemonade to make pomada or Mediterranean tonic.

Hooting Owl North Yorkshire Gin it their Signatute Gin.

Jakadaal · 14/03/2026 18:58

Gin Mare tastes of olive and rosemary and is very smooth

8TinyToeBeans · 14/03/2026 18:58

Harris or Lussa are my favourites.

tutugogo · 14/03/2026 18:59

Currently on Ben lomond gin, really good

MrsBeltane · 14/03/2026 19:00

Isle of Harris, Silent Pool and Malfy pink grapefruit.

Dearg · 14/03/2026 19:09

another vote for Rock Rose, Hrafn cranachan or one of the Persie gins.

Hrafn is quite niche and has several blends. So s9merh8mg less mainstream if she’s a real aficionado

madameimadam · 14/03/2026 19:13

Tanqueray No 10 is absolutely delicious. Generally quite expensive altho Sainsburys have it on offer now.

Swimmingatdawn · 14/03/2026 19:13

So many good gins it's almost impossible to choose. Agree with getting a local gin if you're not sure what they like. Definitely not flavoured gin, they get thrown/given away if I'm given them.

How about Mason's, Brockmans, Cambridge, Isle of Harris, L'acrobate, Monkey 47, Persie, Strathearn. For starters!

Dartmoorcheffy · 14/03/2026 19:16

Lidl have a really nice cherry blossom gin. Mermaid is nice too and hendricks flora Dora

345grey · 14/03/2026 19:18

I’d go local either to your friend or somewhere special to them if possible. Lots of choices and often in lovely bottles.

lots of great suggestions already above, o often enjoy a Scottish gin. Rock Rose is fab. I think the best one I’ve tried is pilgrims from St Andrews, ideally with fever tree Mediterranean tonic.

a glass to go with is also a nice idea, I love a g&t in a big ‘special’ glass.

Moveyourbleedingarse · 14/03/2026 19:21

My favourite is Tanqueray 10. Followed by Twisted Nose if I'm going local.

We either have lime or strips of cucumber in ours.

Someone always has it on offer. I won't pay more than £28. Ocado and Waitrose are reliable for a discount on this.
