Anyone else have a DP who tells the most pointless ridiculous lies? Just caught mine out in one when a message flashed up on his phone. He says he doesn’t know why he does it. Can anyone who does it explain why?

OP, did you want everyone to reassure you that this is normal and no big deal? Because your responses are bizarre.

It really doesn‘t matter. It is his character. He is a liar.

This.
I dated a chronic, harmless liar. He lied about everything. Little lies that were often meant to make me laugh or be funny, or impress me. It did none of those.
I had to end it.

Often thats the case. They just want to be told its ok.

No, read my OP

What does your OP have to do with the way you’re responding?

MrsColinRobinson · 13/03/2026 18:55

We've all read your OP and your replies are still bloody weird.

Why don't you go and snap at your weird arsed lying boyfriend rather than ppl here. You're so defensive it's clear you don't intend to leave him so why bother posting?

Easterbunnygettingawrapping · 13/03/2026 18:58

My exh lied. About mostly pointless crap.
Caught him out on a big lie one Sunday evening. Threw him out the next day and filed for divorce the same day.
Haven't set eyes on him since that Sunday I'm 2012...
Twas one lie too many.

Completely pointless. I thought he was playing golf with one group of friends at his golf club. Saw message from another friend on his phone and it turns out he was with another group at a different golf club. Also he lied about what he had eaten for lunch. Sausage roll versus fish and chips. What is the point of these type of lies?

For a quiet life

For a quiet life

But it didn’t make any difference to me who and where he was playing golf or what he had for lunch so he wouldn’t have got any grief about it from me.

With my amateur psychology hat on, so might all be bollocks, it’s because when he was a child and if he was in trouble it made no difference to either the punishment or his parents response whether he admitted it or not, so he may as well lie to get out of trouble.
He is still carrying in this behaviour in adulthood because he is trying to work out the ‘best ‘ answer so as to not be in trouble.
whether or not you can live with this is up to you, but I couldn’t. If he lies about golf and lunch he will lie about anything and everything.

Thanks, that’s a possibility. He did it early on in our relationship but did seem to stop when I said it wasn’t acceptable to me.

He lies because he places no value on the truth, and therefore which friends he was actually playing golf with is unimportant, or irrelevant, to him.

For that reason, I would seriously reconsider your future with this man.

Sadly then it sounds like he’s simply a compulsive liar. What you do with that is up to you.

GardeningMummy · 13/03/2026 19:20

The absent father of my child was like this. A Walter Mitty. Only I didn’t find out until long after I’d had our daughter as he was an exquisite liar and should’ve been an actor! Genuinely he would’ve won BAFTAs.
I don’t have enough energy to type the examples I’d like to give but yep, it went from the mundane inconsequential shite, right up to life-destroying stuff. His constant lies, made it impossible to believe a single thing he says and that’s no exaggeration. Genuinely, it’s exhausting. Before long, you end up questioning everything, even his answer when you ask him how his day went!!! You can’t live like that.

Easterbunnygettingawrapping · 13/03/2026 19:21

Oddly enough lots of exh's small lies were golf related...
