This is extremely sad - and she had no symptoms but it was found during a routine mammogram and was luckily caught early

I love Jane Fallon's books, think I've read most of them.

Had no idea she was RG's partner. Far more surprising to me than her being one of the 1 in 9 (at least I think it's 1 in 9) women who cop breast cancer.

There are no certainties with cancer. Not even at an early stage unfortunately.

That’s why @AnnaMagnanisaid ‘almost’ certain.

You sound like the doom-mongering twat who, upon learning that my DP has early stage, slow-growing, contained prostate cancer which just needs monitoring, told me last week that I should still prepare myself for the possibility that he might die.

I’m struggling to see why this is something you would start a thread about?

Ricky Gervaise is a celebrity; as far as I’m aware any partner of his is not. It would be like me posting a thread about my neighbour’s hip operation.

She is an author. And if it reminds someone to get screened then great.

And what nasty comments on here. When the woman from Little Mix was on socials and interviews every couple of minutes about her children’s health, did anyone say ‘why is she more worthy of attention for this than anyone else’?

When that dancer had cancer, did anyone comment that other people have it too so who cares?

People are at liberty to start threads about anything they want. It was obvious from the title what the thread was about. Nobody had to click on it.

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about these subjects:

Because I couldn’t be arsed with all the “who?” Comments.

But I assumed it was common knowledge that she’s a bestselling author.
it’s also in the link

So sorry I shall make sure that next time I channel my psychic powers so I post ina way that is pleasing to everyone on MN 😂

Ah OP - ignore them! I agree. If you had used her name you would have had people wanging on about how they didn’t know who she was as there seems to be a general inability to Google on most internet chat sites

Why on earth do you call her Ricky Gervais's partner and not Jane Fallon? She's a best-selling author, not just his partner.

I am puzzled by this too

I know who Jane Fallon is, but for a long time, I didn't know she was partnered up with Ricky Gervais.

Anyway, I'm sorry to hear that news and I wish her the best. They made one of her books into a musical. I hope it comes here. She's great.

Because people may not know who she is and are too lazy to google or in fact to ignore the thread!

Happyjoe · 13/03/2026 00:03

That's very sad - she seems a lovely lady. Always fit and healthy too. Hope all sorted quickly and she recovers and... Pickle gives loads of cuddles!

LycheeFizz1972 · 13/03/2026 00:09

OP - I agree with you. I felt sad to hear this, and wish her well.

Apart from that, my goodness this thread is the very worst of Mumsnet, everyone piling in to nitpick every aspect of your post for some reason. FGS just step back and take this in the manner it was intended.

Leave the op alone. If she wants to chat about this let her. I’m so fed up with people who criticise the op for starting a post about sth. If it bores you move along.

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 13/03/2026 00:52

I was diagnosed with early breast cancer last August after a routine mammogram. Thank goodness for mammograms because even my surgeon could not feel the 24mm tumour because it was so deep. I have had surgery, radiotherapy and now on 5 years of the hideous estrogen blocking medication. I’m having quite a bit of joint pain and fatigue. My cholesterol has gone up too. It’s evil stuff. The worry of recurrence will never go away.

Tbf the news outlets are describing it as ‘Ricky Gervais long term partner has breast cancer’ so I’m not sure why everyone is piling on the OP

RosePetalsRose · 13/03/2026 01:11

I didnt she was an author and would certainly have questioned who?
To me she is is Ricky Getvais wife.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 13/03/2026 01:55

I know her as RG's partner, an author, a cat mum (Ollie RIP & Pickle) & a twitter/X poster. I didn't know about her cancer diagnosis, so thanks OP. I wish her all the best - I've been through it myself & it's not to be sneered at. May the treatment go well & may she be clear ever afterwards.

NewGirlInTown · 13/03/2026 02:48

She has a fucking name. Jane Fallon is a best selling author, and not just the partner of Ricky Gervais.

leaflikebrew · 13/03/2026 05:20

FFS!

What a pile on to the OP

Classic Mumsnet

Top tip - don't start a thread about anything as you shall be punished severely for doing so.

disappearingfish · 13/03/2026 07:10

Really poor choice of title and your OP smacks of ghoulishness. If you had said “I love Jane Fallon’s novels and I wish her well with her treatment” it would have been more palatable. But to not even name a woman who is extremely talented and successful in her own right is bad form.

The news outlets are equally bad, and a damning indictment of how the media treats women.

The news outlets are part of the patriarchy machine, of course they are!

Mumsnet is a site that we expect to centre women.

Jane doesn't write the kind of books I read, but she was a producer on This Life, so I knew of her before Ricky.

saveforthat · 13/03/2026 07:20

BauhausOfEliott · 12/03/2026 23:18

That’s a shame and I hope she makes a full recovery but… not sure why this is more significant or thread-worthy than any other person getting breast cancer? It’s not an unusual situation.

This. I had breast cancer as have millions of women. It does irritate me when celebrities go on about their cancer journey. Breast cancer is one of the easiest cancers to treat. In real life, once it's out most people want to move on and not discuss. I'm not suggesting JF will milk this and wish her the absolute best. No idea why the OP wanted to post this.

Skipin29 · 13/03/2026 07:25

I didn’t know she was an author and my first thought was the irony of Afterlife. So I understand why OP wrote it how she did.

franklymydearscarlett · 13/03/2026 07:33

It’s not extremely sad. It’s early stage and will be treated. And she is 65 so not a young woman and therefore not particularly rare.

I said that because everyone is having a go at OP for calling her Ricky’s long term partner. Not everyone knows who Jane is

So true! And people ‘struggling’ to understand why a post was written. Get a grip.

I have read at least one Jane Fallon book and had no idea she was the Jane RG speaks about.

I wish her all the best.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 13/03/2026 12:55

This is from Jane's X account:

'I had no symptoms but the brilliant radiographer spotted something iffy & sent me for further tests & eventually a biopsy. Since then I've had more mammograms, more biopsies and an MRI so they can pinpoint the problem area precisely. It's been a lot, I’m not going to lie.'

Having been through it myself, I know how gruelling that stuff is. When one of my biopsies was finished, one of the nurses congratulated me on how I'd dealt with it (it was hard but I'd managed to hold everything together) & when I asked why, what did other women do, she paused & said, "Some of our ladies break down". 😥

Sending love to Jane & to any woman who's going through this today.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 13/03/2026 13:19

She'll have the best possible private care so.i really hope she makes a speedy recovery.Getting rid of Matthew was one of my favourite books back in the day.
