Sent a wrong item on Vinted - why do I have to pay to return it?

Seller wants me to return the top and she’ll refund me. Fair enough but I’ll be out of pocket for her mistake as I’ll have to pay to return it. Surely this isn’t right?

Your post title made me think you’d sent the wrong item, but I think you mean you’ve been sent something in error? No, you shouldn’t be out of pocket for the postage. Ask them to cover the postage costs to return it to them or contact Vinted for advice.

Kdobelda · 11/03/2026 16:52

I had this, and the seller sent me a prepaid postage thing, you could try requesting that

Peoplemakemedespair · 11/03/2026 16:54

Morally you shouldn’t have to pay, vinted is generally shit with the sort of thing though so I’m not sure you can force her to pay the postage costs

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 11/03/2026 16:55

If you can still edit, you might want to update your OP, it sounds like you sent the wrong item.

Money first or you don't send it back, you have no guarantee that she will refund you for it.

ItsmeMargo · 11/03/2026 16:56

I had this on eBay, and the Seller sent me the cost of the postage via PayPal in order for me to post it back to her. You shouldn’t be out of pocket for someone else’s mistake.

BootsandCatss · 11/03/2026 17:01

I had this last week, the seller can offer to pay the postage but generally it’s on whoever is returning the item, which is shit especially when it’s not your fault you’ve received the wrong item.

cleaningandclearing · 11/03/2026 17:01

Sorry I can’t edit it. Yes, I’ve been sent the incorrect item

to be fair she has already initiated the refund. It’ll cost me to send it back though! So annoying

It is one of the worst parts of Vinted that it is the seller’s choice to pay return postage or not no matter what the reason.

This seller should do the decent thing but clearly isn’t going to.

Also, because it is then a cancelled sale you don’t get to leave her honest feedback to warn other buyers that this is her modus operandi.

I once mixed up two items and sent them to the wrong people but I apologised profusely, told them to keep the item and refunded them.

SquishyGloopyBum · 11/03/2026 17:51

If she’s initiated the refund I wouldn’t bother sending it back. If she queries then say you were waiting on a postage label from her.

cleaningandclearing · 11/03/2026 18:01

Aw I don’t like doing that. Just annoying I’ll be out of pocket!

CookingFatCat · 11/03/2026 18:04

Are you sure seller hasn’t just decided to refund you? I’d check!

firstofallimadelight · 11/03/2026 18:13

Ask her to cover postage

RandomUsernameHere · 11/03/2026 18:23

Just tell them you’ll send it back as soon as you receive a prepaid postage label.

Offherrockingchair · 11/03/2026 18:26

I had someone do this to me. She apologized and I took the item to the charity shop. She refunded me. That’s how decent people work! That said, I had someone send something covered in stains. I got a refund but had to pay postage to return to her. She tried to say the marks had occurred in the post but they were sun cream tide marks. No way! It annoyed me as I was out of pocket because of her mistake but what else can you do?

cleaningandclearing · 11/03/2026 18:29

She has initiated the refund but wants the item back. Being a decent person I’ll send it but it is annoying I’ll have to cover the cost of this. She has sent my top to someone else. They are sending that back to her and she says when she gets it she will message me to give me an opportunity to rebuy it.

i had this recently and I requested a refund and the seller sent me a postage label so I didn’t pay postage. I fact I had bundled 2 items together, 1 was fine but the other one was the wrong item. But I got the postage paid for to return so in effect I didn’t pay for postage for the item that was fine either.

IwanttoWFH · 11/03/2026 18:32

Ask her to send the postage via PayPal. Someone sent me a dress covered in mud and holes, but wanted it back. I asked her to pay the return postage and she agreed. I sent her my email address and she paid me via PayPal.

Trusttheawesomeness · 11/03/2026 18:34

Tell her she needs to send you a postage label. Honestly, it does not make you a bad person if you refuse to send it back until she covers the postage cost.

purplecorkheart · 11/03/2026 18:34

Tell her that she needs to send you a prepaid postage label if she wishes for you to return the item. Tell her you will not be left out of pocket due to her error. Tell her of she does not send the prepaid label you will assume that she does not want the item back. Also say it her mistake should not cost you a penny. Sometimes you have to break it down for them to see reason.

Silverbirchleaf · 11/03/2026 18:46

She should pay the return postage. Why should you be out of pocket?

Fallabeller · 11/03/2026 18:50

Please please don't just send it back without a fight. The more people stand up to sellers like this, the less they'll try and get away with it.

Ask her to cover the cost of the return postage as the fault was not yours OR when she gives you the opportunity to buy the other top, she automatically discounts it by the amount you have lost.

purplescissors · 11/03/2026 19:30

It’s ridiculous that it’s up to the seller to decide, if they’ve sent out the wrong item.

What’s the point in the ‘buyer protection’ buyers are forced to pay, when you can end up out of pocket for a seller mistake?!

Catcatcatcatcat · 11/03/2026 19:38

Tell her you will return it when she pays you for the postage.

TheFallenMadonna · 11/03/2026 19:43

This happened to me (I got something soneone else had bought)and the seller arranged a pick up.
