When driving, where do you put your handbag?

Just because I’m utterly curious, when you’re driving, where do you put your handbag?

If no one is in the front passenger seat, I put it there.

Currently, if someone is sitting in the front passenger seat I put it on the back seat, phone on the little tray thing in the middle front under the dash. The bag doesn’t fit in the middle arm rest divider (handbag is small, divider is smaller).

Where do you put yours?

superb !

Passenger seat or back seats. If the car is full (only if I’m carrying the full family or taking DC’s friends out, it goes in the boot or I don’t bring one.

Shittyyear2025 · 03/03/2026 19:55

Passenger footwell. Friend had her bag snatched at traffic lights once, so I don't make it an obvious opportunity by having mine on the seat.

FurForksSake · 03/03/2026 19:55

My car doors automatically lock as soon as I drive off. And my car is a mobile skip at the best of times. I’ve never been concerned about bag theft.

OhBettyCalmDown · 03/03/2026 19:56

Passenger foot well for me too

AgentPidge · 03/03/2026 20:20

In the boot, where it can't be seen.

mathanxiety · 03/03/2026 20:26

Passenger seat or centre console, or it remains on me (crossbody).

Never on the floor as the floors are damp from snow on boots.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 03/03/2026 20:54

Passenger seat unless I have the top down and then it’s under the passenger seat where it can’t be seen.

Passenger footwell with the strap wrapped around the gear stick
and hooked under the handbrake
so is cannot be snatched

Why don’t you just lock your doors?

Windows can be smashed relatively quickly and front passenger items taken

Myblueclematis · 04/03/2026 07:55

If I don't have a passenger to pick up, it goes on the front seat, if I do, it goes in the back behind my seat on the floor.

I have a friend who always puts hers in the boot of the car.

user2848502016 · 04/03/2026 07:58

Passenger seat/footwell or on the floor behind the driver’s seat so I can reach it if needed.

FurForksSake · 04/03/2026 08:22

I have never heard of someone having a window smashed while stopped at lights and their handbag stolen. Where is this happening??

UniquePinkSwan · 04/03/2026 08:33

I never carry one. They’re a nuisance had the time

mondaytosunday · 04/03/2026 08:38

Same. Though at most it’s a small cross body bag, and I usually only use that if I have to take my insulin with me. Otherwise my phone is my wallet! And keys in pocket.

Jrisix · 04/03/2026 08:38

Passenger seat if it's empty. If my husband is there sometimes on his lap... otherwise on the armrest thing between the seats.

In Asia I drove a teeny tiny car that had no central console at all, just a big empty space in the front and it was perfect for a handbag.

Purplecatshopaholic · 04/03/2026 08:39

Passenger seat. I always lock my doors! Numerous cubby holes/spaces for phone etc too. I hate having a passenger as I need to put my handbag in the back!

The only place I’ve ever heard of it happening is via a friend who lives in Capetown. Not unusual there apparently 🤷‍♀️ but I’ve never heard of it happening in the uk. An opportunistic grab via an unlocked door maybe, but window smashing seems extreme, to me anyway!

Tricky if the roof is down

and I do it because a friend had her bag snatched in a small city in England

Squirrel60 · 04/03/2026 09:52

Under my driver's seat, so it can't easily be seen!

ViolaPlains · 04/03/2026 09:55

In the boot. There’s lots of smash and grabs from front passenger seats in my area.

NotDarkGothicMama · 04/03/2026 09:55

On the seat next to me, or in the rear passenger footwell if there's someone else in the car. Squashed between my seat and the door if the car is full. Rarely, in the boot.

I always lock the doors and if I'm feeling particularly security conscious I loop the strap through my seatbelt as I do it up.
