When driving, where do you put your handbag?

Just because I’m utterly curious, when you’re driving, where do you put your handbag?

If no one is in the front passenger seat, I put it there.

Currently, if someone is sitting in the front passenger seat I put it on the back seat, phone on the little tray thing in the middle front under the dash. The bag doesn’t fit in the middle arm rest divider (handbag is small, divider is smaller).

Where do you put yours?

People who elaborately wrap their handbag round various bits of their car - why not just lock your car doors while driving? My bag goes either on the front seat or in the rear footwell.

I never lock my car whilst in it for safety reasons. If you lose consciousness, are in an accident, fire etc.

I use a small rucksack so front passenger seat if alone or boot if passengers. I have a very nice bag if going out out and that’s on mine or DH lap depending on who is driving. Phone goes in the holder each time, I never put my bag on the floor anywhere.

StopWindingBobStopWinding · 03/03/2026 09:30

In the rear footwell behind my seat. A friend had her bag snatched from the passenger seat while stopped at lights so I always have it on the side away from the pavement now. My phone links to my car system by Bluetooth so no need to have anything in the front with me.

I had those same hooks as pp, so handy for my bag and DC school bags etc

Boot if someone in front passenger seat?!

Forgive me, but why not literally anywhere else 😂

Don't know really! Habit. It;s somehow easier to get it out of the boot than the backseat. I have a bad back and twisting around is painful. That must be why, but tbh I've never thought about it!

Passenger footwell

MikeRafone · 03/03/2026 10:29

Behind my seat in the footwell, never take my phone out. Was told years ago never to put handbag on front passenger seat

TheDandyLion · 03/03/2026 10:32

In the armrest compartment.

I like driving with the roof down.

FurForksSake · 03/03/2026 10:34

I strap it in to a special car seat designer for handbags as in a car crash it could become a missile and kill me and I don’t want my mulberry to be the last thing I see before death.

jokes. I literally lob it and it lands where it lands. If I have passengers I hand it to them and expect them to deal with it.

Talkinpeace · 03/03/2026 10:37

TBH if I have work laptop and bag in the car I always strap them in to the passenger seat so that the cannot go flying if I have to brake suddenly.

Xiaoxiong · 03/03/2026 10:38

Passenger footwell, or footwell behind driver's seat. Phone plugged into the car for podcasts and maps (and to charge).

I would put my bag on the passenger seat, but my car will bong at me to put the seatbelt on if I do.

@CanISeeYourLicence Love the emergency McDonalds solution despite bag being in your boot.😁

You can get these soft leather handbag hooks from amazon. I hang my bag from that if I have a passenger, otherwise it's on the front passenger seat.

!!!!!!!
thank you for this! I'll look right now.

I think i moan about the lack of consideration for handbags in car design about once a week.

I hate putting my handbags in the footwell because i don't want them kicked or scuffed. Obvs can't keep them on the seat if someone's next to me and if i put it on the back seat i can't reach it. I keep my phone in the middle console but when i get out of the car i don't want to be having to go into the back and find where my handbags been sliding about to, i just want it handy.

DH is used to having to have my bag in his lap when he's in my car. He eyerolls a bit but complies 🤣

Ducksbehindthesofa · 03/03/2026 10:51

I use a Pom Pom city bag for every day and it stays firmly across me whilst driving!

Laiste · 03/03/2026 10:52

And - while we're here - in my currant car no matter where i adjust the steering wheel to i'm always bashing my nails on the rise of the dashboard right behind the wheel as i turn it. There needs to be room for nails 🤣

(love my car tho)

Some steering wheels can be pulled towards you, as well as adjust up and down. Have you tried that?

Keepthecat · 03/03/2026 18:37

I learnt to drive in Dublin. I was warned right at the start about bag snatching and told to put it on the floor behind the driver's seat. That's 40+ years ago and I still do it now even though I dont live there any longer.

MrsPositivity1 · 03/03/2026 18:40

On floor of passenger seat

Lookskywalker · 03/03/2026 18:42

In the boot.

On the passenger seat if alone,or behind my seat if I have a passenger. However doors are locked as its been known in our area for a bag to be snatched in an instant when pulled up at traffic lights etc.

Same here. I never drive without locking the doors having once stopped in a queue at traffic lights and two people opened the boot of the car a couple of cars away from me and grabbed everything they could from the boot.
It was Christmas time and clearly the occupants had been Christmas shopping. Absolutely nothing they or anyone else could do.Be warned.
My current car has automatic locking but I still check.
