Your first time flying

Just out of interest following a conversation with dh.

Where did you fly to?
How old were you?
what year was it?

For me, it was 1982, I was 13 and we flew to Boston USA! I was so excited! An enormous plane, headphones plugged into the seat to listen to music and a large screen film (no choice of movie). 3 course dinner, snacks, fizzy drinks, I felt so spoilt! It all seemed so glamorous.

You?

I started off strong with a 13 hour flight from London to Kuala Lumpur.

I was flying with Singapore Airlines, in business... it was a delight.

I was about 20 (1999/2000) - since then I've flown many, many times, I still forget how to use an airport, every time.

I was 19, flew alone to Sweden to visit a friend from uni. This was in 2004 so I was a late starter! I’d been abroad lots of times before but only to France and Belgium on the ferry/eurotunnel.

1988 I was 11, flew to the US with my grandma and we got on the wrong flight when we changed planes. Security was not what it is now….

That’s pretty unusual and cool!
I have questions.
Have you been abroad?
Do you have a passport?
Would you, for eg a long weekend in Europe with friends or family?

Thanks 😊

Once went to France for the rugby (over 30 years ago) by ferry, one night stay so had to get passport for that but only used once and never renewed.

I certainly wouldn’t bother to go again - i don’t find the idea of holidays/short breaks even in the UK particularly appealing!

I was 16.

I went to Australia.

1995 - I was 21, flew to Paris, and my terrible fear of flying wasn’t helped by really bad turbulence.

1987 I guess. I was a baby, flying to Finland. Obviously I don't remember it but my mum does (and probably everyone else on the plane), because I cried the entire flight!

3 or 4 to Switzerland. It was Swiss Air and I remember they used to bring ‘goody bags’ for children with crayons and colouring books. The meals also had metal cutlery. It was late 60s/early 70s.

Same!
Flying was a real event back then.
My grandmother gave me her vanity case, which had a little lock on it, to use as my own little suitcase! I felt so grown up 😁

Early twenties, to Switzerland. Was quietly terrified during take-off and didn't calm down much for the rest of the flight!
