Your first time flying

Just out of interest following a conversation with dh.

Where did you fly to?
How old were you?
what year was it?

For me, it was 1982, I was 13 and we flew to Boston USA! I was so excited! An enormous plane, headphones plugged into the seat to listen to music and a large screen film (no choice of movie). 3 course dinner, snacks, fizzy drinks, I felt so spoilt! It all seemed so glamorous.

You?

Genuinely curious, do you ever feel you’ve missed out?

Never. I last went on holiday (as in more than one night away from home) when I was about 11 I think. I have never seen the point of it (for myself anyway).

TheTecknician · 28/02/2026 14:29

July 1986. Leeds Bradford to Ljubljana and back on a JAT Yugoslav Airlines Boeing 727. It it is my favourite jet airliner. I was 15 then.

13, USA, exchange programme with Guides 1984 ish

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 28/02/2026 14:36

I can't even remember! 😳 I think it must have been in the early 90s when I was 11 or 12 and we would have flown from Scotland to London. Apparently there was one particularly hairy landing which freaked my mum out so much that she has never flown Ryanair since!

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 28/02/2026 14:42

16 from Sydney to London in 76. It was bog standard Qantas but how luxurious it was! Leather seats, stacks of room. Aperitif then wine and a liqueur (go on, its a special occasion) Those tube headphones. Food was so so, but i felt like royalty.

Spanglybangles · 28/02/2026 15:11

Early 90’s, aged 21. Glasgow to New York with British Airways. Stopped briefly in Manchester for more passengers to get on (we all stayed on for this).

I remember it being great to push the call bell for the flight attendant to bring more drinks and that there was loads of seat and aisle space compared to today’s planes.

LlynTegid · 28/02/2026 15:15

About 18 months old to visit relatives. Apparently I was travel sick. I don't remember it of course.

Squirrelchops1 · 28/02/2026 15:15

1985, I was 8. Flew to Rhodes with my family
Britannia flight and in the days where you could go up to the cockpit mid flight.

Thecomfortador · 28/02/2026 15:16

I was 13 I think, mid 90s, flew to Vancouver with my brother. We were impressed that they offered us liqueur, and I remember my breakfast yoghurt having mould on it so they got me a new one. On the homeward flight we spent our last bit of money on a Magic of the musicals cd. What an adventure.

RaraRachael · 28/02/2026 15:19

I was 15 and it was in 1977.
I flew to France for an exchange trip where I stayed with a family for 3 weeks then the French girl stayed with us for 3 weeks.

I had awful pain through my ears and couldn't hear a thing for 3 days.

I hated every minute of the trip to France and the girl and I barely spoke for the time she was with us.

An awful experience that took up the whole of my summer holidays 😓

purpleheartsandroses · 28/02/2026 15:41

Too young to remember my first time as a passenger, but I remember the first time I flew a plane! Little 2 seat propeller plane. Barrel rolls were my favourite.

MaisyMary77 · 28/02/2026 15:46

About a day old. I was born in Kirkwall hospital, mainland Orkney. Home was on one of the islands, quickest way back was on the Loganair island hopper.

franke · 28/02/2026 15:46

Around 1980 flew from Geneva to the UK. I was about 11. Very exciting and I got to visit the cockpit with a couple of other kids.

Slimerseyes · 28/02/2026 15:50

Age 29, to the United States.

Carryitjoyfully · 28/02/2026 15:54

I was 16. It was I think 1981 and I was going on a French exchange. We flew to Paris. I honestly thought I was the most glamorous teenager ever. Neither of my parents had been abroad at that point, and I'm very grateful I got the chance.

CrushingOnRubies · 28/02/2026 18:58

6 months old
hong kong
early 90s

apparently the Adams family was the in flight movie.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 28/02/2026 19:21

1987 LHR to Cork where my best friend's dad lived. I was 23. He died about 20 years ago but we still go often enough we should get frequent flyer points.

Actually my very first flight was in a glider a couple of years previously which was thrilling.

ViciousCurrentBun · 28/02/2026 19:26

I had been across Europe but I didn’t fly till I was 21 and went to Los Angelas by myself to a school friends wedding. I got a subsidised flight as I worked as a courier for British Airways. I carried documents in the way over and nothing on the way back.

cobrakaieaglefang · 28/02/2026 20:39

Aged 19, my first 'foreign' holiday, to Greece. Thought it wasn't dissimilar to being on a coach..lack of legroom and less to see out the window. 😁

sonjadog · 28/02/2026 20:45

I don't remember my first flight but it would have been from Belfast - London, when we went to visit my aunt who lived there. I was probably about 5/6. The first long distance flight I did was to California and I still remember it and how exciting it was. I was about 10 at the time. My main memory is my Mum taking me to the tail of the plane to show me the Artic tundra in Canada as we flew over it.

mindutopia · 28/02/2026 21:20

I was probably 2, 1982/3 and I went to Orlando. Lord only knows why my parents thought that would be a fun trip for a toddler. 🤷🏻‍♀️

StudyinBlue · 28/02/2026 21:23

3 or 4 to Switzerland. It was Swiss Air and I remember they used to bring ‘goody bags’ for children with crayons and colouring books. The meals also had metal cutlery. It was late 60s/early 70s.

Pixiedust49 · 28/02/2026 21:30

In the 90s I was 19. Flew to Amsterdam to visit relatives. I’d been abroad before but not flown. I was terrified and still am. Not a fan of travelling really.

Megsdaughter · 28/02/2026 21:31

6 weeks old with my DM and brothers. Flew to RAF Aden 1961where my DF was based.
