London underground bed bug fears

50yearsdowntheroad · 16/02/2026 16:02

We travelled to London at the weekend with DC. They are too big to be carried and too little to stand on moving train so they sat down.

I never sit on the tube or trains as I am terrified of catching bed bugs.

What are the likelihood we brought some home after a short ride (2 x 6 stops)?

The chances are minimal OP. Lived in London 23 years - have have had them once, and didn’t get them on the tube (former tenant of home we bought left them untreated!)

People catch bed bugs from trains ??? Is this just in London?

Of course it’s not! It’s anywhere with a high population and extremely busy public transportation systems

Georgiepud · 17/02/2026 22:39

I've never given it a second's thought in all my decades of using the tube.

ShitaBrick · 17/02/2026 23:27

Bed bugs on public transport. Not just London. That must be why Manchester Piccadilly is shut for 9 days. It’s being fumigated.

This is a major problem

GB News and SM is infested with anti-London rhetoric, misrepresenting statistics, made up and sensationalist stories, as a deliberate racist and right wing attack on Sadiq Khan.

Um, to be fair to the OP, the Tube does have bedbugs and to all the people saying they've never had them, not everyone is affected by bedbug bites. On some they are incredibly itchy and red; on others they do not show up at all and it would be perfectly possible to not know you have them until....well....you discover there's a whole ecosystem living under your mattress.

But although I have had bedbugs in the past and truly do know the hell whereof I speak, OP, I still travel almost daily on the Tube AND I sit down because I know the chances of bringing one home in my clothes is extremely small. Really, try to put this out of your mind.

There have been NO confirmed sightings or evidence of bed bugs on the tube. Yes, ‘complaints’ heavily correlated with the mass gossip about bed bugs in Paris, and it was investigated, but none found.

We are not aware of any confirmed sightings of bedbugs on the transport network in London and have not had to use any bed bug pest control services. As stated above we continue to closely monitor our network and take all possible precautionary measures.”

Well I’ve never heard of such a thing and certainly won’t be worrying about it.

Why is it an attack on the mayor?

I live in London and I’m pretty sick of the man!!

London has always been the target of criticism - even in the distant past when we didn’t have a mayor

the video I saw of bed bugs crawling over a tube seat didn’t look like any bed bug I have seen!!!

I would be more worried about the measles outbreak than bed bugs

Jesus Christ.

Honestly! 🤣

This post cannot be real.

OP - buy a hazmat suit. Don't forget to order one with a hood. And perhaps a gasmask each?

Fine, you are not happy with SK, there will be an election

But the attacks on London as an anti SK tactic are obvious: numerous SM posts and outlets claiming that SK is introducing Shariah law, that London is not safe to visit, misrepresenting the fact that violent crime is at an all time low, etc etc. Every real and supposed issue is blamed on SK with a hefty side serving of xenophobia across SM.

And you can see it in this thread. People believing it, as they have ‘seen it online’ and don’t live in London.

Bruisername · 18/02/2026 10:51

Yes there is stuff about SK that is completely disgusting but there is also a lot of legitimate criticism. And there is a lot of negativity about London that isn’t aimed at the mayor - that’s a little self centred!!!

I wish we had fixed term limits for mayors tbh

I use trains and tubes in London most days and have also recently used the metros in Paris and New York in the last couple of years - not had a single bed bug issue.

Hmmm...

"We are not aware of any confirmed sightings of bedbugs on the transport network in London and have not had to use any bed bug pest control services."

If they didn't call in pest control, I would be interested to know how they would have confirmed the sightings. It's not the kind of thing that most people are able to do!

Changingforthisone1 · 19/02/2026 16:07

I use the tube every day. I'm riddled.

Sesma · 19/02/2026 16:10

A couple or so years ago there were reports of bedbugs on tubes but I think it was maybe France and OP is perhaps getting mixed up with that

dizzydizzydizzy · 19/02/2026 16:21

I use the Tube regularly. No bed bugs so far.

Bruisername · 19/02/2026 16:24

Well at this stage OP hasn’t come back because either

she found no bed bugs and is a bit embarrassed for posting

or

she is currently being held hostage by some aggressive bed bugs and can’t get to her phone
