London underground bed bug fears

50yearsdowntheroad · 16/02/2026 16:02

We travelled to London at the weekend with DC. They are too big to be carried and too little to stand on moving train so they sat down.

I never sit on the tube or trains as I am terrified of catching bed bugs.

What are the likelihood we brought some home after a short ride (2 x 6 stops)?

I have used the London Underground hundreds of times, and other trains too. I've never caught bedbugs and the idea had never even occurred to me.

The risk is absolutely vanishingly tiny.

Either this post is a joke or you are simply looking for something to worry about.

I’m not sure why people are acting like this is ludicrous when it’s quite well documented, last year I think, I remember seeing lots of things about it online including videos showing seats with bedbugs crawling on. And I don’t live in London.

Because I take the tube in central London multiple times a week and have done for decades, I work with hundreds of people who also take the tube multiple times a week, and I have never ever seen a bedbug or heard anyone talk about seeing one.

Whereas you have seen a video online and say you don't live in London.

I found this on the tube the other week, he's very friendly.

CanYouHearYourself · 16/02/2026 17:29

Never mind the seats you may as well have given a tramp a blow job if you're going to hold the poles.

Hope you've had a tetanus shot since.

Oh we all have bed bugs down here OP, you just learn to live with them.

You get used to the itching eventually.

Where's the laugh emoji?!!!!

Tube seats are covered in too much human excrement and bodily fluids to be able to host bed bugs so I wouldn't worry 😅

Literally caked in. Its superb!

FFS - this can't be real. You're more likely to get bugs from your own bed than the London tube!

treeowl · 16/02/2026 17:39

@TheClangyClunk depends on the line & the time!

moggiek · 16/02/2026 17:59

Please, please don’t infect your children with this kind of nonsense.

SergeantWrinkles · 16/02/2026 18:02

You won’t catch bed bugs op. But do watch out for the rats, as there are plenty of those. Perhaps you could take one home as a pet?

Boutonnière · 16/02/2026 18:19

This comes around every few years - the panic mongering, not any actual notable infestation. I remember passengers coming in from New York being that year’s ‘source’ and the link above is from 2023 referencing Paris. In all seriousness, it’s not impossible that it can happen in a transport system that carries many, many people , a proportion of whom have baggage that has recently been in hotel rooms which is a potential vector, but it’s not in any way regarded as a widespread current problem.

Hmmmm. Yes. ‘Documented’ ‘online’.

The absolute crap written ‘online’ about the supposed horrors of London is what is ludicrous

Miranda65 · 17/02/2026 21:00

OP, yours is the most ridiculous post I have ever read on this site! Of course they'll be fine. Just all sit down FFS.

LightningMode · 17/02/2026 21:03

You what?!

YelramBob · 17/02/2026 21:21

London bed bugs are really unfriendly and don't make eye contact with anyone.

Tintarella · 17/02/2026 21:27

Um, to be fair to the OP, the Tube does have bedbugs and to all the people saying they've never had them, not everyone is affected by bedbug bites. On some they are incredibly itchy and red; on others they do not show up at all and it would be perfectly possible to not know you have them until....well....you discover there's a whole ecosystem living under your mattress.

But although I have had bedbugs in the past and truly do know the hell whereof I speak, OP, I still travel almost daily on the Tube AND I sit down because I know the chances of bringing one home in my clothes is extremely small. Really, try to put this out of your mind.

mollypuss1 · 17/02/2026 21:40

Bed bugs are the least of your worries. I went up north once and now I’m infested with whippets.

SideshowAuntSallyxx · 17/02/2026 21:40

I remember a couple of years ago ( after the Paris Olympics around that time) there was supposed to be a bed bug outbreak on the tubes. I went into London, stood up on the tube the whole time and got back and hung my coat up, got undressed in the bathroom just in case. No bed bugs but I did get the most god awful flu/virus (my boss who I had gone in to meet had it too).

Now I can't get a seat for love nor money even though I'd rather sit than stand (my back just can't handle it).

Is this a thing? Lifelong Londoner and never had the issue. Far more worried about a stranger smiling at me or God forbid, talking to me.

I’m surprised OP managed to even post this because down here, after being infested with bed bugs, we all have our mobile phones swiped on a daily basis by muggers on bikes.
Must be using a laptop…

Sugarfish · 16/02/2026 17:14

Quite likely OP. I’m afraid you’re going to have to throw your children out.

You win the Internet today.

People catch bed bugs from trains ??? Is this just in London?
