Earlier this week I read that people were swapping ‘premium eggs’ in the supermarket, for cheaper ones.

Reader, today I opened my Clarence court eggs to find… only half in a box of ten had the relevant crown stamp.

I’ve been had!

Why would someone bother to do this? I always buy posh eggs because of the higher welfare standards but eggs all taste the same so what’s the advantage?

They get the premium eggs with the higher welfare standard without paying the price tag.

That's hilarious! I buy non premium eggs so I'm sure I'll be fine.

I don't think that is true. I used to buy very cheap eggs, in my youth, and they were mostly watery, with a sallow, pale yolk, and quite tasteless. The eggs that I buy now, are full of flavour, with a decent looking yolk.

The are nicer.

Not sure ‘worth being caught shoplifting over ~£1-2 when already buying eggs’, but nicer.

They are a gateway drug in terms of buying premium basics, so best avoided.

That is outrageous! Do you not check eggs anyway to make sure they aren't cracked before buying?

My DH used to ridicule DM for buying expensive premium eggs (the golden yolk premium, not just better welfare premium that we bought). Then he bought some to see what she was on about, and now we can never go back to normal eggs. It’s been an expensive revelation.

God who could be arsed. I must admit though I’d be quite upset if I bought free range (which I always do) and then was inadvertently eating battery farmed ones, not due to cost but welfare

I think you can tell the difference. The yolk is richer and bigger from a higher quality egg. The best ones are from from a proper farm shop.

Eggs definitely don’t all taste the same, the diet of the chickens has a huge impact.
The difference between Supermarket free range and something like Ewe eggs or those fresh off a farm is massive, even the shells are different.
The taste, the texture is completely different.
I’d use cheaper eggs for baking but not for eating as scrambled/fried etc.

It’s like comparing skimmed milk with Jersey gold top.

The nutritional content between 'good' eggs and cheap eggs can very significantly because of the difference on feed and lifestyle.

I always pay more for better eggs, and I always check in the supermarket that there are no cracked ones, so I hope I would notice a swap.

It's definitely worth getting higher welfare eggs. I mostly buy eggs from my farmer neighbour. They vary in size shape and colour of both shell and yolk, and they are very fresh, but supplies are very thin this time of year.

I saw this! seems mad .I dont see how no one would notice TBH.I buy Sainsburys own (not basics) which are free range .Always check for cracked shells anyway .

I saw a women doing this in the supermarket a couple of weeks ago. I always get my eggs from the back now.

It’s not unlikely. We catch people doing this regularly and it’s definitely a thing.

Our local supermarket has out a sign up warning people that the eggs area is covered by CCTV. It’s been going on for ages where I live.

I have seen people do it. I did once take some more expensive eggs and put them in there.Mid range section because there was only one box left in mid range and out of fifteen eggs.Two were broken, so I swapped those out.

i know, i fancy some Duchy eggs, i will just swap a few from my Essential box.
