Victim of egg fraud

MidnightPatrol · 15/02/2026 09:40

Earlier this week I read that people were swapping ‘premium eggs’ in the supermarket, for cheaper ones.

Reader, today I opened my Clarence court eggs to find… only half in a box of ten had the relevant crown stamp.

I’ve been had!

Check your eggs!

I have seen people do it. I did once take some more expensive eggs and put them in there.Mid range section because there was only one box left in mid range and out of fifteen eggs. Two were broken, so I swapped those out.

😳

TutTutTutSigh · 15/02/2026 10:38

People regularly steal from the honesty box egg stand on a nearby farm. Cctv shows them driving up in their not inexpensive cars to do so. It must cost them more in fuel to drive to a rural farm to steal the eggs. People are strange.

FluffytheGoldfish · 15/02/2026 10:41

I saw a couple swapping eggs from one box to another but they seemed to be swapping small for large in the mixed size boxes rather than brands. Unlikely to be more luxury brand as the boxes looked like the same cheap cardboard.

They get the premium eggs with the higher welfare standard without paying the price tag.

It's the price that pays for the welfare standard, so if they aren't paying the right price they aren't paying for the animal welfare.

But hey, it isn't really the welfare of the hens they are interested in, is it? They don't care about that. All they want is what they perceive to be a 'better quality' product without having to pay a higher price for it.

ReprogramNeeded · 15/02/2026 11:20

I haven't heard of this before, but I know the Mixed Size boxes of 10 eggs get their contents swapped around!

Christmasinmecar · 15/02/2026 11:21

I'm vegan so don't eat eggs, but never knew this was a thing though.
Live and learn.

MiniCoopers · 15/02/2026 11:37

I’ll def be keeping an eye out for this, I just check they aren’t cracked and that’s it … I was sad today to see my local Tesco have stopped stocking Burford Browns. I love them as their yolks are so orange and tasty

what a very middle class crime!

Purchased in Waitrose, no less!

This feels like a lesser crime, as I suppose they are the same product.

A bit of a marginal gain however…!

Of course all eggs don't taste the same.... What a ridiculous statement!

Noonshine · 15/02/2026 11:45

on buying a bra in M & S, she checked the package, in case it had been swapped with another bra, someone's used bra, because people do this!

God, that makes sense — I always assumed the checkout person was just checking that the size inside was the same as on the box or hanger, but that has illuminated things.

I too have seen people do this.
Swapping eggs is a thing for some folk.

AfraidToRun · 15/02/2026 11:48

Because they are really sticking it to the man whilst crying about cost of living and lowering their integrity...

P.s I'm not normally this harsh but I've had a week of cfs

crossedlines · 15/02/2026 11:50

Surely cctv would pick this up. There’s cameras covering every bit of most supermarkets

NewGoldFox · 15/02/2026 11:53

I’ve seen someone swapping xl eggs for a different size before. I mean how ridiculous and unpleasant.
There seems to be no punishment for petty thievery anymore and people have no shame so 🤷🏻‍♀️
No punishment for all the horrible people in the Epstein files either though 🤷🏻‍♀️🙈

Autumn1990 · 15/02/2026 11:53

The golden colour of an egg yolk is determined by the food the chicken has eaten, additives are added to the food to get the golden colour. If chickens are free range and eat certain weeds the yolks end up a greenish shade

Flannelfeet · 15/02/2026 11:54

Its even worse when you crack open a double yolker that you spent 5 quid on for 6 to find 1 tiny yolk 😫.

Feel bumped 😔.

johnd2 · 15/02/2026 12:00

Yeah I've heard from a thread on here about people thinking that the mixed ones are mixed because they didn't sort them, rather than because you're paying for the average weight. I think it was an aibu because someone had spotted them picking all the biggest ones into their box and said they wished there were so bold!

LadyCrustybread · 15/02/2026 12:08

I never buy large eggs because I heard it hurts the chickens. Am I being ridiculous believing this?

@Autumn1990BB add marigolds and paprika to the chicken feed as the colour additive, I believe

AFieldOfStars · 15/02/2026 12:12

That's awful! A lot of people make sacrifices so that they can afford the higher melfare products. We only eat meat a couple of times a week, in order to be able to afford the higher welfare dairy, meat and eggs. I'd be hopping mad to find cheap 🥚 after scrimping and saving to afford the good ones.

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 15/02/2026 18:21

Made a 3 egg omelette and one egg yolk was suspiciously pale, had a look and yes, had been swapped.

Yeas ago, I bought a packet of paracetamol, went to take some once home and there was only one sleeve instead of three.
Now I always check.

Edited

Not as much as being culled because they produce eggs that are too big to go in the small eggs supply chain.

Why would someone bother to do this? I always buy posh eggs because of the higher welfare standards but eggs all taste the same so what’s the advantage?

They want the posh ones for the same reason you do! Duh!

NormasArse · 15/02/2026 18:28

WelcometomyUnderworld · 15/02/2026 09:53

This.

My DH used to ridicule DM for buying expensive premium eggs (the golden yolk premium, not just better welfare premium that we bought). Then he bought some to see what she was on about, and now we can never go back to normal eggs. It’s been an expensive revelation.

But much nicer for the hens!
