Separate duvets - how does it work??

So DH and I have finally reached the point of complete incompatibility in bed 😂. He’s recently lost lots of weight / insulation, has always preferred to be very warm in bed and has started sleeping under a weighted blanket. Ive always preferred a cooler sleep, but now have peri-menopausal feet of fire and hot flushes to contend with each night. With the weighted blanket on top of our double duvet, I can’t even move my side of it during the night 🙄 so German - style separate duvets it is.

Oyr bed is big 180cm x 200cm. What size duvet should we aim for? Chat reckons 200x220cm. And how does it look remotely tidy during the day?

Ive got a king-size bed.

We each have a single duvet ,different togs for different heat/ needs.

To keep it looking nice they both have matched covers and pillows slips.

You can also put a bedspread over the lot to look nice

Swaytheboat · 07/02/2026 13:34

We had a king sized bed and a double duvet each. During the day I layered them up so only one showed on top.

banivani · 07/02/2026 13:40

In Sweden the norm is a 150x200 cm each. Before things were styled you’d just flap them out beside each other and let them overlap and get on with your day. Bedspreads of course would cover the duvets so you wouldn’t see the overlap. Or you’d do a sort of fold in version so you’d have to neatly folded duvets beside each other. I believe nowadays to ”style” a bed some people flap the duvets out so they cover vertically and not from pillow to foot of bed.

singles are a lot easier to change/wash/dry than doubles.

rickyrickygrimes · 07/02/2026 13:50

The ikea singles here are 150x200 which seems sufficient for one? My sister said doubles but tbh I get annoyed when the duvet is all bunched up 🤷‍♀️

We have a dual tog king size. Half is 10.5 and the other half is 4.5.

GarlicBound · 07/02/2026 13:54

I think Chat misunderstood your question. It's given the duvet size (one) for your bed.

Single duvets are wider than half your bed, so they're what you need. Absolutely true that you can get one in a washing machine, too, and dry it before next week.

ShawnaMacallister · 07/02/2026 13:56

We have double duvets and a king size that goes over both of us in winter though I almost always push that one off. I wouldn't be happy with a single duvet, I like to wrap up in mine and a single wouldn't be big enough.

Elpheba · 07/02/2026 13:56

I have a double high tog duvet, DH has a single low tog duvet and we share a super king bed. I fold mine in half lengthways when I make the bed and DH’s just lays flat. Matching duvet covers- it looks fine! Also- no one goes in our room except family so who cares 🤷🏼‍♀️ enjoy the freedom- it’s my number one tip for a happy marriage!

kittyfairy66 · 07/02/2026 13:57

Me hubby have king size duvet each been like that over 10 yrs

Squirrelblanket · 07/02/2026 14:01

We have a king-size bed and a single IKEA duvet each. Matching bedding. It's brilliant, I would never go back!

LupinLou · 07/02/2026 14:07

We have two IKEA singles on our bed (so 150 * 200).

Can't help on how to make them look tidy, I don't bother to make the bed normally as nobody is going to see it, and it also means the mattress gets aired.

Rawrrawr1 · 07/02/2026 14:11

We have a king size bed and 2 king sized duvets, I like to wrap like a burrito and his is flung all over the place.
I just fold one on top of the other in the morning

TheKateColumbo · 07/02/2026 14:32

It doesn’t for us.
We’ve been on few holidays recently where the hotel had separate duvets and either they ended up falling off or there would be a cold gap between us.

MargaretThursday · 07/02/2026 16:17

We have the opposite way round. Dh likes to be cool and I like to be warm.

On a double bed we have:

1x kingsized about 7/8 tog that we share.

I then have a fleecy blanket and a 10tog double duvet over just me.
If it's really cold I may add a second double duvet and just occasionally I have the 4 tog one as well.

Macadamian · 07/02/2026 16:22

I suspect the variety of answers may be in part due to people being different sizes OP!
There are other factors of course, as pp have mentioned, but it's certainly the case that a petite size 6 woman might find a single more plentiful than a size 28 tall woman.

Mumsntfan1 · 07/02/2026 16:31

I'm in Germany, you can get 135cm or 155cm wide duvets. Depends on the size of the bed/personal preference.

Simonjt · 07/02/2026 16:31

We have a superking bed and we both have a single duvet, he gets cold so his is 12 tog, mines 4. Typically we end up under one, so we may given soon and get two that are maybe eight tog.

MyBestThing · 07/02/2026 16:32

We have a super king bed and two single duvets. DH has 15 tog and I have 4 tog.
I couldn't bear two double duvets as I'd end up still too hot with all the surplus duvet.
I don't really care what they look like but they do have matching bedding.

RedRosie · 07/02/2026 16:38

We have two doubles on a king size bed (because DH rolls himself up like a giant slug), but singles would work as well.

Lugga · 07/02/2026 16:47

In Belgium and Sweden AirBnBs we've had I think normal single duvets. We find them rotated through 90 degrees and folded on the bottom half of the bed on arrival.

I assume this is how they make beds for daytime generally, but I'm not sure.

Aboutmeabouttime · 07/02/2026 16:58

Tall DH means he can only cope with King size duvet. I like a double in winter and a single in the summer 🤣

VanCleefArpels · 07/02/2026 16:59

2 single duvets on a super king bed. Folded in half side by side in the Austrian style during the day. Marriage saved.

BertieBotts · 07/02/2026 17:04

200 x 220cm doesn't even exist and is somewhere between a standard double or standard king size duvet, so ChatGPT is talking shit XD

We have the extra long/wide ones Ikea do here in Germany but they don't seem to sell them in the UK. Ours are 220 long and 160 wide. It does mean we can only get duvet covers from Ikea.

Standard UK single is 140 wide, 200 long. UK Ikea single is 150 wide, 200 long.

DancinOnTheCeiling · 07/02/2026 21:45

We have a king size bed and use two Ikea singles which are bigger than UK singles but smaller than UK doubles. Works very well.
