Are your kids allowed to sit on the kitchen side?

Just that really. I don't mind kids sitting on the sides, wipe down before cooking etc anyway. They aren't wearing shoes or anything.

Dsis hates it!

It’s not a room for eating in. All meals are at the dining room table or snack/breakfast at the kitchen island. All meals are sat down for.

Sorry, yes, I get that, buy wasn’t sure what that has to do with sitting on the kitchen work surface.

MissyB1 · 27/01/2026 18:32

No definitely not. It wouldn’t even occur to me to put a small child on the kitchen counter, sounds really unsafe. Potential for a nasty fall, potential for scalds or burns. And why would an older child sit on the counter? I don’t really get it.

Everleigh13 · 27/01/2026 18:36

No, never. None of us would sit on a kitchen worktop. I sometimes see small children sitting on them in YouTube videos and wonder whether they ever fall off (it looks really unsafe to me).

I don't get it either. It's not something I've seen anybody do.
Although I did pop DD in a bumbo on the counter once or twice when she was a baby so that I could cook without her attached to me.

Apparently I did once as a small child and still the scar on my head from when I fell off.

Yes, we have stools at the breakfast bar but DD(19) still sits on the side to chat! Can't get worked up really. If it's not her, its one of the cats.

No!

Not me thinking you meant the kitchen side of the table 😂 as in, closer to the cooker/oven, and therefore more likely to be at risk of being injured.

My current understanding is that you actually mean the bunker! It is my favourite place to sit, and always has been. Would be hypocritical to stop others from doing so.
