Are your kids allowed to sit on the kitchen side?

Just that really. I don't mind kids sitting on the sides, wipe down before cooking etc anyway. They aren't wearing shoes or anything.

Dsis hates it!

No - they sit on the stools at the kitchen island or in the dining room. No food in the living room.

HoneyOats · 27/01/2026 15:06

It’s not something any of my children have done or would do.

Namechangwbillionthtime · 27/01/2026 15:07

Mine do occasionally, I'm not keen but would never say anything as it makes them feel cool + they'll sit on the side and chat to me whilst I'm pottering about which is nice

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 27/01/2026 15:08

Mine did when small. It was a stupid kitchen, no room for a table or anywhere to sit, so if I was working in there and a small child was with me, they would sit up on the one bit of worktop I wasn't using.

vickyfowler · 27/01/2026 15:08

I can’t vote becsue it’s not something I ever made a rule about. None of them ever did though. Can’t say I would be too fussed if they did.

borisjohnsonsforgottencondom · 27/01/2026 15:08

Yep, and so do I when DH is cooking! We have a very small kitchen, no other seating available

BarnacleBeasley · 27/01/2026 15:09

No, but when DS was 2 he was obsessed with sitting on the kitchen counter and would beg to be allowed. He also wanted to hold the butter in his hot, grubby hands. No idea why.

Princessoflitchenstein · 27/01/2026 15:09

When they were small there was a corner they could sit in with a wall and talk and help but after aged 5 nope. They sit on the big country style table (always at least 5 chairs!)

LaundryScales · 27/01/2026 15:09

When they were little it wouldn't have been safe and once they were adult sized it would be an odd thing to do surely?

Chairs are for sitting on, not tables

PevenseygirlQQ · 27/01/2026 15:10

Doesn’t bother me if my teenager does it, but tbh it’s rare he does. I sometimes sit my toddler on the counter to wash hands or choose a snack or something.

Me and my brothers used to do it all the time when we were teenagers, I used to talk to my stepmum whilst she was cooking dinner.

The countertops would probably cave in if I did it now 😂

LowdermilkPark · 27/01/2026 15:11

Ours do, and I do too.

Bowling4soup · 27/01/2026 15:11

My 5yo sometimes asks to sit on the worktop while I’m in the kitchen. I don’t mind putting them on there

MotherOfCrocodiles · 27/01/2026 15:17

One of mine hops up there like a frog to use the sink. He has been told not to. Doesn’t listen. Just like my cat, he never listened either.

ComeSnowoOrSnow · 27/01/2026 15:25

On work surfaces? Absolutely not! Sit on a chair or floor or stand.

Paquitavariation · 27/01/2026 15:28

Yes, they did occasionally. It’s not a hill to die on, it’s not dangerous, hurts no one and causes no damage.

mynameiscalypso · 27/01/2026 15:29

Mine did it once as a small child, tried to jump/wriggle off and it ended up with a trip to the hospital with a suspected broken foot - thankfully it wasn’t one but it took him a month to stop limping.

TheFairyCaravan · 27/01/2026 15:30

No ours never did and neither do I.

2 yo DGS has got a learning tower, at home, so he stands in that if he needs his hands washing or wants to see/ help with what’s going on in the kitchen.

Same here. And DH does the same when I'm cooking! We actually do have other seating at the kitchen table but we both prefer the kitchen counter 😬

TinyGingerCat · 27/01/2026 15:38

Kids never did it but recently my 6ft5 DS has taken to doing it. Usually when he wants to chat about something when I’m cooking and do you know what I love it. He’s a very clean boy so I’m not worried about germs 🤣

Razapple · 27/01/2026 15:39

Yep! We don’t really have the space for them to have stools so if they’re helping in the kitchen then they’re sat on the side

ShiningforLeeBertie · 27/01/2026 15:42

Counters are for glasses, not for asses

PocketsAndSedition · 27/01/2026 15:44

I'm pretty sure I did this until I left home in my early 20s! No idea exactly why, I think I just found it comforting somehow.

Spinmeister · 27/01/2026 15:45

No, we were told they can take a weight of 45-50kg any more and there's a risk of cracking. No one sits or stands on them. I don't think it has ever occurred to the DC to try.

HeadyLamarr · 27/01/2026 15:48

On the work surfaces? Hell no, they all have cupboards above them, they'd have handles poking into their backs.

Not to mention finding enough clear countertop without small appliances etc.

No, there are stools facing the kitchen, they sit on those.
