Is it time to boycott the World Cup

I know we all said this about the last World Cup. Ice have murdered a man in the street. Surely Europe can send a message and just say no.
It would be the ultimate humiliation for Trump

The point of my post is that, regadless of what we might think, many football fans quite simply didn't care about the slavery, abuses and deaths beneath Qatar's glossy surface, because they themselves were safe during the world cup.

This time round football fans could suffer. That's new. That's the difference.

I don't see how the political context can be swept under the carpet this time. Certainly I don't expect ICE will make allowances for football fans.

Do you know what happens if you report your own rape in Qatar?

You will be arrested.

There was even an incident prior to the World Cup where someone abandoned a baby in the toilets at the airport and they forced an entire plane load of women of ‘child-bearing age’ off the plane and subjected them to invasive exams.

So why has the U.S. abandoned their belief in being better then?

In terms of women’s rights, we are better. No comparison.

Goodness, how can you say that with a straight face!

Because America very obviously is better than Qatar on women’s rights. Like, do you hear yourself? What is wrong with you?

I don’t know what we can do about people like that. I’ve made plenty of attempts over the years to point out the craziness but none of it seems to stick. The internet allows and even encourages people live inside worlds entirely of their own making, where the things you want to be true always are, and the people who say otherwise are the worst people in the world.

I don’t know how we get out of this tbh. No matter what new thing happens, 24hrs later there it is again. Who’d’ve thought this would be the world the internet would bring us.

You've been on Mumsnet for years? Really? What since 2016?

Sskka · 26/01/2026 12:45

It’s not just mumsnet though is it? Nearly everywhere has become like this. It’s a bit grim when you recall what hopes we all had for the internet when it first appeared.

@soddingspiderseason-.All these threads would have people believe that America is burning and its dangerous to step outside your door. I'm just trying to give a different perspective. I can't Deny T does and says some crazy shit,.but this is still a country full of good people including lots of tourists just going about thier lives. I went to a game yesterday 65000 people singing the anthem proud. The same in every state across the country because they are good people regardless of who the President is.
