Is it time to boycott the World Cup

I know we all said this about the last World Cup. Ice have murdered a man in the street. Surely Europe can send a message and just say no.
It would be the ultimate humiliation for Trump

Sports and politics shouldn’t be mixed. There’s lots of ordinary Americans looking forward to the extra revenue for their businesses that this World Cup will bring and why should they suffer.

Looking forward to being allowed to watch games at Utopia 2030, hope we qualify.

This is typical "going to the opposite and equally undesirable extreme to gaslight the people making a point you cant properly argue with because it's true"

The US is the richest country in the history of the world and there are many many other countries whose people.are in far more desperate need of tourist revenues than them. Any of these ordinary people who voted Trump have caused the unfolding catastrophe

It’s embarrassing to have to say this, but America today is not Germany in 1936. Don’t be stupid.

Shooting unarmed people, breaking down doors to ask if youre a citizen, (Anne Frank anyone? ) pulled out of cars because you are expressing an differing opinion toa policy, people with an accent or darker skin colour being focused on, legitimate immigrants attending appointments to.continue the naturalisation process being ripped out of the offices and deported. (All from a country that makes much of its first ammendment rights and gun rights.)
All sounds very gestapo like to me.

Hundreds of Thousands of fans attend these venues every weekend they are perfectly safe.

Yet ICE are going to the Superbowl. Apparently the kkk republicans don't like the 'foreigner' Bad Bunny doing the half time show...Bad Bunny who is of course from Puerto Rico. Sounds a bit political and rascist to me.
Cant tell me that if someone was throwing a party in the US right now and were told that ICE was going to be patrolling outside that it wouldnt affect the party vibe.

I feel for ordinary decent American citizens who are suffering due to the fascist tactics of the current administration. Not all Americans are that evil.
on the other hand if the maga crowd are suffering im quite sure trump will pull out all the stops to send them their cheques of money from all the savings he made from his DOGE raid. Hopefully they aren't holding their breath.

StCuntyMcCunterson · 25/01/2026 19:00

I mean, I wasn’t planning on going anyway but yes! Absolutely! I listened to the Alistair’s Campbell and Anthony Scaramucci podcast this morning and they described him perfectly - an incompetent man who constantly needs pandering to. This would show him! We need to be doing sanctions etc with them too. Apparently, we signed a trade deal where we pay more for medicines and pharmaceuticals and one of the conditions is that we don’t get tariffs. He has no ethics. What would Diane Lockhart do?!

If enough countries boycotted he would care. He wouldn’t show it but he would be humiliated

Some might say that he is incapable of understanding the concept of that emotion.

He only has concepts of plans, not concepts of emotions. 😀

ICE/ border patrol are always at the Superbowl. ICE are present and operate all over the country and have done since 2003. The reason you don't see the issues happening in Minnesota all over the country is because other states police and prison services liaise with ICE and report undocumented/ illegal immigrants and detain them.

Oh haha, I thought we were days past somebody coming out with this one.

No, there is a specific, named by the government as Operation Metro Surge, immigration enforcement program occurring in Minneapolis that has resulted in the deaths of Renee Good, Alex Pretti, and the assault and detainment of multiple other Minneapolis residents, including the five-year-old boy who you may have seen wearing his bunny hat. Just in case you’re worried about him, he’s currently reportedly in a detention center, where there’s a protest going on.

Homeland Security themselves said it is ‘the largest immigration enforcement operation ever carried out’

Pam Bondi has sent a kind letter saying that if only Minneapolis would hand over their confidential voter data, among other requests, all this can stop. What a nice lady!

Hope that helps 😊

@EreWeGo- no need to be snarky. I was replying to comment on my earlier post about sporting venues being safe. Then I followed up because ICE being present at large sporting events isn't new and doesn't automatically make them unsafe. Chill the fuck out.

It isn’t very chill living in America at the moment. Excuse me for not skipping through a field of daisies.

CommonlyKnownAs · 25/01/2026 21:48

I'd love to see European teams opt out, and agree Trump would care.

For the rest of the world the football is much bigger than this. Keep things in some kind of proportion please.

And how ridiculous is that.

Tulipvase · 25/01/2026 21:55

Sskka · 25/01/2026 08:53

Couldn’t we just let people enjoy things without dragging politics into everything? Imagine how much better life would be. Even better than the brief endorphin rush we get from looking like the good people!

As opposed to the brief endorphin rush of winning a game?

MOntueslite · 25/01/2026 21:59

Tulipvase · 25/01/2026 21:54

So true. I don’t hate football (nor M I a big fan) I normally watch some matches in a big tournament. However I was once appalled when a work colleague told me he left his wife three hours after she gave birth, so he could go to an away game. Apprently it was all right as she knew how much it meant to him. Makes me understand the mindset

A boycott by the competing nations is not going to happen. Fans are more likely to stay away because of cost.

Yeah - coz that’s gonna show trump.
coz he is waiting on the viewing figures coming through.

😂 the desperation is real.

soddingspiderseason · 25/01/2026 23:31

Teams could refuse to play in the US and insist on playing in Canada or Mexico, citing safety fears.

Two people have been murdered by ICE in cold blood. Your president threatened to invade Greenland, insulted the whole of Europe, called British soldiers who died in Afghanistan cowards and has a penchant for very young girls. So whilst it may be calm where you are, the rest of the civilised world is looking on with horror at what is happening to your country.
