Anyone fancy keeping me company while I wait for the AA?

Broken down. Recovery isn't due until 4.20pm. Been waiting an hour already. Happy Monday 🤦‍♀️🙄

School run time unfortunately…. Bye!!! Hope the AA comes along soon (sometimes they are early) x

ProfessorRedshoeblueshoe · 19/01/2026 15:10

Are you in a safe place ? Our car broke down on the motorway but we were lucky enough to be able to get off it. It is boring though. Actually there was a building site next to us, and they made us a cuppa.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 19/01/2026 15:13

Oh dear. Hope it's a simple fix 🤞

BiggyJ · 19/01/2026 15:14

Hope you are somewhere safe (ish) and they come earlier than expected.
Do you know what's wrong?

About a year ago, I saw a lady broken down on my way to the school run. She was still there on our way back home.
I dropped the DCs home then went back to check if she was OK
Stunned when she said I was the first person who had stopped.
She had the recovery coming but they were lost (!)
I went to get her a coffee to warm up - she had nothing to keep her warm and it was her electrics that had gone. I gave her a blanket from my boot.
Luckily when I came back with the coffee the recovery had just turned up.

Littlebitpsycho · 19/01/2026 15:15

Yes I'm safe thank you @ProfessorRedshoeblueshoe 😊 was just pulling out from a country lane onto quite a busy road - but managed to roll it backwards back into the lane. @MyOliveStorki was just driving to school to try and pick up DD but that was a massive fail 🤦‍♀️🤣

@BiggyJ I'm absolutely rubbish with cars, but basically every time I try to pull away the revs wont go high enough and then it cuts out, whilst chuffing out the sort of black smoke you only usually see in the movies!

I'm not surprised by your experience, ive been here nearly 2 hours and only one person (a lovely lady like yourself) pulled up to check i was OK and just waiting for help!

Fingers crossed that recovery arrives early. Daffodil

BiggyJ · 19/01/2026 15:27

@Littlebitpsycho it's awful isn't it.
I'm glad you were able to get you and your car in a safe place.
I was really shocked as this lady was on a roundabout, a minor one but still very busy volume of cars wise, and she too, had been there for 2 hours plus.
I asked my DH what he would have done if he had done the school pick up that day.
He said he 100% would have stopped but would have kept the kids with him instead of dropping them off at home first.
He said it's a sad state of affairs in that in most cases, men will not stop as they don't want to seem to be a threat to a lone woman.
He said that having our kids with him would've given him some credibility that he wasn't a danger to her.
Sorry probably not explaining this very well am I.

itsgettingweird · 19/01/2026 15:29

Hope recovery arrive soon.

May be a clogged air filter or turbo of your a turbo car.

FinallyHere · 19/01/2026 15:33

Hope recovery don’t leave you waiting too much longer. Calling for help in this situation is exactly what mobile phones are for.

ProfessorRedshoeblueshoe · 19/01/2026 15:38

BiggyJ you did explain that clearly, and your DHs idea sounds very sensible.

Littlebitpsycho · 19/01/2026 15:38

I've just heard from the AA, recovery now due around 4.30 - at least they're keeping me updated i suppose. I'm finding it really tiring, like I could easily take a nap 🤣 thanks everyone for cheering me up at least. Shame I didn't think to bring any snacks!

Last time I broke down it was in a car park so at least that was convenient and I could go and get a hot drink. Also some nice biscuits to share with the repair guy!

I used to have an older car which broke down a lot. On the motorway once, which was horrible. A car stopped on the hard shoulder and I was worried in case it was someone dodgy, but it was my friend and her dad and I was so pleased to have company!

BiggyJ · 19/01/2026 15:50

@Littlebitpsycho hope your dd got picked up OK from school.

@ProfessorRedshoeblueshoe thank you, I waffled on a bit 🙊
We have broken down on a motorway before, same issue as the lady I checked on, electrics just went.
Luckily we were spotted quite quickly by highway patrol officers on their cameras! They wrapped up DCs in silver space blankets and called them little burritos 🌯 😂 and they stayed with us until recovery arrived as our car was black and it was getting dark and we couldn't use our hazards (no electrics!!) to indicate a broken down vehicle.
That was a scary experience.

Hope you are feeling OK @Littlebitpsycho x

TheNightingalesStarling · 19/01/2026 15:56

My car died (RIP) on the M18 last year, mw and 2 children waited an hour in for the Recovery truck.. who then ha to take us further away from home as it was the nearest "safe place" (the Recovery driver agreed it was mad!).
No one stopped but I didn't expect them too...

Have you got the AA Ap o you can get update else?

ProfessorRedshoeblueshoe · 19/01/2026 15:58

That is scary BiggyJ.

Kitterkitkat · 19/01/2026 15:58

I'm around for a while, just out of a meeting so quite tired! Dd got picked up OK?

AA shouldn't be much longer 🌺

Littlebitpsycho · 19/01/2026 16:05

Thanks everyone, I'm still waiting - i really really don't want it to get dark before recovery arrives!

Thankfully my exH (DDs dad) and I have an excellent relationship and I called him and he went to collect her himself and will get her some dinner etc until I get home. DD is 14 so not of the age where she'll be worried luckily!

Literally want to cry, updated now to 17.50pm! The recovery company they're sending is only 4 miles away, how can it possibly take FIVE HOURS to come and get me?

OP posts:
TheNightingalesStarling · 19/01/2026 16:20

It will be because you are in a "safe place"rather than on a motorway of A road...

Is there anyone who can bring you something or sit with you?

ProfessorRedshoeblueshoe · 19/01/2026 16:21

That's a pain. Sorry you are having such a long wait

Seawolves · 19/01/2026 16:21

It's one of the awful things about breakdowns! They tell you an hour but it's actually more like five or six, do they know you're a lone female?

Tara220 · 19/01/2026 16:22

I broke down on the motorway last year, its very stressful. I had Start rescue they were rubbish, they told me climb out the passenger door and on the verge but it was impossible.as dogs car seat was in front passenger seat and my car has a kind of decorative bar thing across the console and i just couldnt do it. Rescue suggested i walk to the services and wait there!! How fangerous is that!! Especially with a dog in tow.

They turned up after a couple hours and then my car wouldnt move onto the tow truck because all the security gizmos kicked in and its a super heavy car. They did get it on the truck in the end and it turned out to be an electrical component had failed and switched my fuel off.

Hope they get to you soon OP

Littlebitpsycho · 19/01/2026 16:25

@TheNightingalesStarling they told me I wasn't in a safe place and that I was booked as priority. My boyfriend has offered to come when he finishes work but there's no point us both being cold and bored.

@Seawolvesyes they know I'm a lonely female. All I can say is its a good job my phone was fully charged when I left home!
