Does anyone else feel like this winter has been really long and dark?

I don't know if it is just my mood.

It seems like we've had lots of gloomy days where the sun's barely been in sight before we sink back down into darkness for another 18 hours and I'm so over it.

Winter doesn't usually get to me but this year it has.

Is it just me? Or is anyone else feeling it?

Maybe it is just my mood.

I had some kind of virus in the run up to Xmas that made me feel like shit for weeks, so I had to "do" Xmas running on empty, whereas normally I go all out and enjoy it, this year it felt like a slog and made me quite unhappy really and I haven't been able to shake that.

Now I'm desperately clutching at straws to make myself feel better eg that it's slightly lighter and not completely dark at 4 pm, I monitor how every day the darkness lasts a little less, like I'm gradually winning a battle.

Yes I fell ill with some kind of fluey type virus for The first couple of weeks of December and it's taken a course of antibiotics finished yesterday to get rid of the horrendous coughs and throat infections that had plagued me since. It's too long and dark for me and what I think makes it worse is that in my area, the council now have streey lights that barely give off any light, green spaces and parks aren't lit at all and I've hated not having daylight to go for my after-work walk when I've logged off at 5pm. I've hated driving in the dark there and back to work in my office days on pitch black rural routes with the battle of blinding headlights! I'm going on holiday very soon and can't bloody wait!

Yes. I don't know if it's me getting older or we have had less sunlight than usual.

Our streetlights have been turned down by 40% thanks to the council having to save money so it makes going out harder and darker. I feel really hemmed in by the dark these days.

I feel this too, the council have just made it a lot more unsafe and intimidating for me to go for a walk after work when I log off at 5pm.

It’s not even been a month yet.

Let's focus on reality rather than the meteorological calendar, it gets dark and grim from October onwards with a lot of wet and dismal weather, this is month 4 of dealing with that for people.

Exactly that - it's been months of living under artificial light, generally shit weather, and about two thirds of each day spent in darkness. Nothing that we can about it obviously, but roll on spring and summer.

Husband and I head out for morning walks every weekday at 07:45 before starting work; we used to use the gym more when it's dark in the mornings but this winter for some reason we walked. Made a huge difference in hindsight as I was just thinking to myself the other day I haven't felt the gloomy-ness of winter this year.

What I hate is how low the sun is this time of year.. makes driving so challenging!

MissCooCooMcgoo · 19/01/2026 13:03

I am with you op. My soul is craving a sunny blue skied day. It can be cold as it likes but I need some sunshine.

It's been wet and oppressive and grey for months here in the Midlands. Last nice day with some sun I remember was boxing day.

I would vote for GMT year round if it were up to me. I hate it when it's still light past 8.

That's my second preference after BST year round, what we have now is my third one.

If we did not change clocks then winter darkness would be more gradual and perhaps November would not feel so bad.

Lasnailinthecoffin · 23/01/2026 09:43

I've found it cold, wet and dark a lot of the time. Then I went to northern Norway at Christmas, where there was no sunlight at all and I really appreciated the difference when I returned.

zurigo · 23/01/2026 09:45

Here in the south it's just been incredibly wet and dreary. It's always dark at this time of the year, but when it's grey I agree it seems darker and some days it barely seems to get light. I hate it. Roll on spring!!!! 🌱

ChangeIsDue · 23/01/2026 10:30

The dinginess is awful and no sign of it moving on. But, although I suspect this wouldn’t be a popular view, I still prefer it to icy, freezing conditions (which might be brighter).

ContentedAlpaca · 23/01/2026 10:53

Today is grey for the second day. I need to try to get outside at lunchtime I think.

Delatron · 23/01/2026 14:02

I’m very much struggling with the endless dark mornings an rain. The week where it was cold and sunny made a difference!

I will never understand those people on Mumsnet who enjoy this weather. I have never met a single person in real life who says ‘I’m really loving this rain and gloominess evey day’ I love getting soaked and muddy when I walk my dog. I love that parkrun is cancelled because the river is flooded. Yay a few more month of this…

I need to see the sun! I don’t care about the temperature

FourBlackCats · 23/01/2026 14:38

Hate it hate it hate it. Have slightly improved it this year by NOT forcing myself to go outside, contrary to all advice. I’m in some sort of hibernating denial.

Sartre · 23/01/2026 14:46

Nope, I think it’s the same as every other year. If anything it’s gone slightly quicker and I’m already noticing early signs of spring appearing- slightly lighter for longer, more birds around chirping etc.

tinyspiny · 23/01/2026 14:48

I love winter but this one is a bit too wet for my liking , I prefer cold and dry .
