Does anyone else feel like this winter has been really long and dark?

I don't know if it is just my mood.

It seems like we've had lots of gloomy days where the sun's barely been in sight before we sink back down into darkness for another 18 hours and I'm so over it.

Winter doesn't usually get to me but this year it has.

Is it just me? Or is anyone else feeling it?

Yeah. I love long dark winter though.

Damnd · 18/01/2026 01:35

Quite the opposite for me but I love winter and it's gone so fast

Ocrata · 18/01/2026 01:35

Really? I just feel totally hemmed in and frustrated. I'm tired of being cold and having no light.

Felt it this time last year

havent felt it this year - some nice bright days and it’s gone so quickly

Ocrata · 18/01/2026 01:41

Maybe it is just my mood.

I had some kind of virus in the run up to Xmas that made me feel like shit for weeks, so I had to "do" Xmas running on empty, whereas normally I go all out and enjoy it, this year it felt like a slog and made me quite unhappy really and I haven't been able to shake that.

Now I'm desperately clutching at straws to make myself feel better eg that it's slightly lighter and not completely dark at 4 pm, I monitor how every day the darkness lasts a little less, like I'm gradually winning a battle.

Me. It’s been the darkest winter I can remember. And I work outside so at least I get a lot of light (when there is any). We have had a few sunny days since November but few and far between. Miserable, and I usually love winter. I also had the virus pre Christmas however! So maybe there is something in that.
we have rain rain and more rain forecast this week but at least there are some signs of spring showing, shoots and buds starting to come through and such.

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 18/01/2026 07:21

I feel like the mornings are taking longer to get light this winter. I don't remember it still being dark close to 8am at this time of year. Feels like it's dragging on for ages.

molifly · 18/01/2026 07:22

It certainly feels very dark in the mornings too

Mumsknot · 18/01/2026 07:26

It’s been very rainy - that much I’ve noticed - getting soaked on my commute. But there have been a few weekends with sun which I hugely appreciate!

Yes agree. I’m disappointed it’s going so fast.

Octavia64 · 18/01/2026 07:28

I have had a load of viruses this autumn which has probably meant I’m feeling like this.

yes, fed up with rain and bad weather.

AprilinPortugal · 18/01/2026 07:28

Where I am there's been grey rainy days but also some bright, sunny frosty days which I love. We've had no snow though 😟

ThroughTheRedDoor · 18/01/2026 07:28

I was thinking it was starting to turn the corner in the last week. Birds are chirping. Snowdrops are out. Lots of green shoots in the garden.

Its getting there. The shortest day is almost a month behind us.

But I do know what you mean. I'm not a fan of winter really.
I used to do a 20 mile commute and this time of year and the next 6 weeks were my favourite as signs of spring start to emerge. Watching the hedgerows green up and the bulbs emerge always made me feel better (and not doing both journeys in the dark)!. Its the only time I miss that commute!

PersephoneParlormaid · 18/01/2026 07:30

I don’t mind winter, but I really hate the dark mornings. Going out to work and coming home in the dark.

autumn1610 · 18/01/2026 07:33

Not really love winter. I am really trying to embrace the slowing down and wintering ethos and it’s so much better, zero pressure. I actually now get anxious about summer and feeling pressure to have plans or I’m not making the most of it. Officially we’ve only had one and a half months of winter doesn’t end till March!

DeftGoldHedgehog · 18/01/2026 07:38

Not particularly. I feel like autumn was pretty long and it has been more wintry for the last month, and more like proper winter temperatures. But it's already getting lighter and soon we'll be seeing snowdrops and hyacinths. I was in London yesterday and sat outside in the sunshine with my drink.

That said, January itself always seems twice as long as any other month. But it's more than half over already.

@TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast @molifly yes, I agree. Where I am the sun doesn’t properly come out until after 8:30am which feels even later than previously!

Squirrelchops1 · 18/01/2026 08:07

No, there was quite a period of days over Christmas and new year with beautiful sunny but cold days. Last week was similar. Pre Christmas I felt more down as a lot of rain which depresses me more.

DappledThings · 18/01/2026 08:09

Not particularly. I'm in Kent but spent Christmas in West of England and in both places we've had lots of gorgeous bright days.

This was Boxing Day. It was a beautiful cold but bright day.

Yesterday was bright and beautiful too. We were on the beach with chips.

Does anyone else feel like this winter has been really long and dark?
Maidenjourney · 18/01/2026 08:12

I absolutely hate winter and this year it’s just felt so depressing. There have been sunny days but I just can’t bear the cold and dark. It’s one of the hardest winters I have had.

EleanorReally · 18/01/2026 08:13

sunrise is getting earlier by a minute a day
and sunset is getting later
so that is a positive.
blue monday tomorrow

HighStreetOtter · 18/01/2026 08:14

I hate Jan and Feb. It was still quite dark at 8am today. Sick of it.

DontKillSteve · 18/01/2026 08:15

I think it’s all the rain. Everywhere is saturated and we’ve had no snow here either.

MsPug · 18/01/2026 08:16

Yes dark grey miserable weather is rotten isn't it. There have been nice bright days as well but if we are feeling a bit down then we forget those quite quickly!

I got a puppy last summer so this has given me a reason to go out every single day even in the heaviest rain and it makes such a difference! Plug my audio book in and away we go. Also I have found reformer Pilates recently and that has been amazing as well - trouble is it's so expensive I'm going to have to sell a kidney on vinted to pay for it

Wolverine23 · 18/01/2026 08:18

Not at all! I am a summer /autumn lady but I don’t like June very much with so much sunlight. Spring/ Late summer/early autumn are perfect daylight hours. And I look forward to the the dark winters because I feel I can rest more, no pressure and just relax. I’m quite active in the summer months so a welcome relief. We need all seasons and they all serve their purpose
