How far are you comfortably flying on a weeks holiday.

For a week I'd be happy flying to Spain, Italy, Malta and at a push the canaries.
DH wants to go further away but doesn't know where.
Surely less than 5 hours is ok but anything longer will cut out the first and last day.

4 hours I reckon

MushyPeasAndMintSauce · 13/01/2026 20:17

I have a friend who went to Melbourne to her friend's wedding literally went airport to wedding and then back to the airport and flew back again.
For me I have done Mexico for a week but that's the limit I think.
Don't get me wrong somebody wants to give me an all expenses paid trip somewhere long haul for a few days I doubt I'd say no.

bumblingbovine49 · 13/01/2026 20:18

I had an 8 night holiday in India two years ago. It was brilliant . The flight was around 10 hrs I think ( can't quite remember). The 8 nights did not include the flight out as that was an overnight flight so strictly speaking it was a 9 night holiday

If the holiday is really no more than 7 nights in tota, including travel time, time zones would have an effect, so I'd possibly visit South Africa for a week, for example as although it is a 10+ hour flight, jet lag is not an issue. You would get 5-6 full nights there which is enough to make it worth it I think. However, generally I'd say no more than about 7 -8 hours, and possibly less if there is a big time zone difference.

the80sweregreat · 13/01/2026 20:19

I don’t think I could travel long haul anymore.
Maybe 4 hours , but anything more than this it’s a no
( unless it was first or business class, but even then it’s iffy and that won’t happen anyway! lol)

WhineAndWine1 · 13/01/2026 20:20

Did Las Vegas for 5 days and would do it again for a reason like a gig or something . We have a week booked to Turkey in July is 4hrs 45mins.

I did this in reverse with three kids. But it was due to COVID. I've not been on a plane since. It was awful.

WanderlustMom · 13/01/2026 20:21

I’d do an 8 ish hour flight and that would probably be my limit really.

Nincompoo · 13/01/2026 20:22

I’ve done Thailand for ten days a couple of times but it is a LOT.

6 hours would probably be my limit for a week.

Christmasbird · 13/01/2026 20:22

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 13/01/2026 20:07

In the past for a week I’ve been as far as Hong Kong and regularly to the east coast US and Caribbean probably 10-20 times I’ve also done long weekend city breaks to the US.
I’m older now with more time so tend to go for longer but if you offered me a week in Barbados I’d take it without question

7/8 hours easy. Drink a good few in the lounge before and sleep sleep sleep

FuzzyWolf · 13/01/2026 20:24

I think 10 hours is fine although only because psychologically that seems nowhere near as long as 12 hours. I’d opt for somewhere direct though.

I don’t really need sleep which means I don’t suffer from jet lag in a typical way although travelling can make me feel a bit achy.

Lordofmyflies · 13/01/2026 20:26

Probably around 8 hours. I try and make the flight as enjoyable as possible and part of the holiday by extra leg room seats, a lounge and a couple of good films and find that the time passes quickly and comfortably.

oscalo · 13/01/2026 20:29

I really don't know how to overcome the boredom and restlessness I now feel on a long flight which for me is 4hrs+ 😧. Yes, I'm constantly looking at my watch and it's always just five minutes later! Nothing works for me so I'm resigned to it now. Netflix, podcasts, books, puzzles nothing works. I get cranky as hell. So anything more than 4 hours is torture. Although I know I'm lucky to be able to pick and choose to go away!

My days of long hauls are well and truly over now. But I've seen all I want to see to left and right of home ha ha.

SchoolDilemma17 · 13/01/2026 21:41

7-8 hours max

Eyesopenwideawake · 13/01/2026 21:46

I went to LA for 5 nights a couple of years back, luckily able to go business class so slept both ways.

hohahagogo · 13/01/2026 21:48

I’ve been to the Maldives, to Sri Lanka, to India, to the usa

FlyingPinkUnicorn · 13/01/2026 21:52

We’ve done Thailand, Australia and Mauritius all for a week each and New York for 4 days but that was before children.
I think our max now is 6 hours. For the last two years we have done a week of winter sun in Egypt and that is my limit now (although that may just be down to the crap short haul easy jet planes…)

Justputsomeyoghurtonit · 13/01/2026 22:00

I've been to Hong Kong, Boston, NYC, Miami all for five days or less.

I nearly went to cape town for the weekend last year. I like planes and sleeping on them.

DurhamDurham · 13/01/2026 22:04

We wanted to go to Canada;Toronto and Niagara Falls and only had a week’s annual leave at work left to take. It was brilliant, totally worth travelling. We did four days in Toronto and then three in Niagara Falls.

Ineedanewsofa · 13/01/2026 22:06

Done Mexico for a week twice in the last 4 years, both times they were really good flight times however that gave us more time on the way out and worked like an overnight flight on the way back.
Also did Dubai for a week a few times pre covid - Friday night flight out, landed 7am their time on Saturday morning, leave the following Saturday on an early evening flight which meant landing in the early afternoon in the UK due to time difference. You do need to be able to power through a bit and have the time difference work in your favour though

Justwonswards · 13/01/2026 22:09

3 hours for me.

Conversely, I won't go anywhere with a flight longer than 90 minutes, for less than a week.

Millymolly99 · 13/01/2026 22:09

Captainj1 · 13/01/2026 19:54

Btw I’ve done Cape Verde for a week with the DH and two DC. Was absolutely fine as no or very little time change and the hotel was a 5 minute drive from the airport. The plane was a bit rubbish but that’s because the runways are short so you can’t land bigger aircraft there. It’s basically 2 films.

Same here - it’s a straight forward journey

Millymolly99 · 13/01/2026 22:14

Ohpleeeease · 13/01/2026 20:14

I’d do a week in Barbados.

We’re going to Barbados next week, I won’t go that far for less than 2 weeks

Junaluma · 13/01/2026 22:54

I’ve done a week in Brazil, Jamaica & Thailand. All fine.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 13/01/2026 23:02

I did Barbados for a week and it was great. Have flown to Dubai for 5 days.
