So glad to hear that @BestIsWest. Unmumsnetty Hugs to @BIossomtoes .
Just to echo experiences of NHS. I don't want to go into detail but 3 of my close family are receiving absolutey excellent treatment at the moment.

I also hadn't booked a GP appointment for a while and I needed to book one for my son. It was the speediest ever!

I watched the 28 years later bone temple teterday and there was a great joke about the NHS , which made me smile. (If you haven't seen it yet - go - its amazing)

Incredible as it may seem, the Tories could dump Brexit and leave Reform and Farage holding the baby. This would see a huge surge in support as the disenfranchised forced into the LibDem tent return.

I know they won't, which is what will make their oblivion more sweet.

Yep. With the likes of Nick Timothy getting his turn on the opposition front bench there’s no chance of this happening.

Its as if they don’t want their Home Counties back.

Notonthestairs · 17/01/2026 13:02

"There's no stability or certainty with that man and that's just as bad for business as just having the tarifs."

Yes, any win with Trump is a temporary one and not just worthless but detrimental.

MaybeNotBob · 17/01/2026 13:10

As I posted on another thread - Denmark just needs to announce that the Epstein files are in Greenland and Trump will lose interest...

LlttledrummergirI · 17/01/2026 13:15

I can also confirm that when it comes to cancer, the NHS is fabulous. I've just had the results (benign) of a tumour I had removed in the run up to Christmas. They were amazing.

PickAChew · 17/01/2026 13:39

Lovely news for both of you, @BestIsWest amd @countrygirl99

Lalgarh · 17/01/2026 14:46

Sky just showed Kemi Badenoch addressing the protestors campaigning against the proposed Chinese embassy in London. She seems to be gaining a bit of a boost after Jenrick left

Nige is going to attend the WEF in Davos, or as he called it the jaunt for globalists.

Nige is going to attend the WEF in Davos, or as he called it the jaunt for globalists.

But isn't WEF the enemy according to the far right?

Is Nige deliberately self sabotaging?

Notonthestairs · 17/01/2026 15:29

Obviously he’s attending so that he can reject them face to face!
After all those years of moaning, what a bloody hypocrite.

It would kill Reform dead in the water. They would be left having to bang the Brexit drum on their own. While the Tories leap free from the trap and join Labour as having the freedom to move back slowly.

I'd wager that regardless of when and what moves happen in the interim, any prospect of the UK getting back to it's EU membership status is going to be around 2040.

Or - as someone pointed out to me, when someone born in 2020 is 20 years old.

SerendipityJane · 17/01/2026 15:52

Sorry to spoil the NHS love fest

I'm afraid I have less impressive tales of the NHS. The more you use it the more you have to accept and navigate it's jaw dropping incompetence and inability to actually treat anything. I can point to about £50,000 of waste in the case of one individual patient. And none of her stories are that rare. So simple proportion suggests there is plenty of scope for savings.

The actual clinical staff are saints to a person - they cannot be faulted. But the system they are part of is fatally fucked.

Although I guess the one clinical failure I know of - a friends sister being repeated sent home from A&E with "constipation" only to die from an ectopic pregnancy probably makes up for a lot.

Even I know that any woman of child bearing age (plus a bit either side) should always be tested for pregnancy as a matter of course. Something which clearly wasn't taught to the 3 separate doctors who came to the same wrong diagnosis and never did a pregnancy test.

I am sure Starmer will be criticised for standing up to Trump whilst also being criticised for not standing up to Trump.

Well after the Epstein Files she's right

Alexandra2001 · 17/01/2026 17:49

Former Trump advisor (Republican) says Trump wont be able to a: Raise the money to buy and b: Congress/Senate will stop him putting tariffs on our allies over this...
Reckons the solution is for the US to just use existing agreements and have whatever military they want to put there...

We shall...

Badenoch says Tariffs are "a terrible idea" She is certainly a sharp one!

Great news @BestIsWest !
The Toynbee article reveals something I’ve been battling with a dispirited Labour voting friend lately. She keeps insisting nothing is improving and one of her big moans is the NHS. Doesn’t matter how many figures she sees, she won’t have it that it isn’t getting worse. She’s the opposite though - says it worse particularly in her area, the improvements arent happening there. Given she’s 8n a deprived bit of the red wall I’d be surprised if it’s not actually 8m proving faster there than elsewhere.
The Lucy Powell interview is interesting and she comes across well, but the time of the writer is still annoying, talking about Starmer ‘floundering’ and being concerned that she’s talking to other MPs etc. I dispute Powell’s own words about budget leaks too. There weren’t leaks as the things ‘leaked’ didn’t happen. They were media speculation based on (mainly) Reeves refusing to give a direct answer to questions about eg tax - like absolutely every chancellor before her.

Yep... made up stuff, just like the "Our sources are saying KS should sack Streeting for plotting against him.... "

Always in the right wing media...

How convenient these "sources" come out just as Jenrick defects.....

Alaska's closer to Russia than Greenland. And most of Alaska is within the Arctic circle. Can Trump not understand a geographicial map or globe?

Starmer is right to say it's completely wrong. Because everything about this so called capture of Greenland is wrong.

placemats · 17/01/2026 20:34

If Badenoch had any sense (I know, but stay with me on this), then she should absolutely be in cross party agreement about Starmer's reply regarding the tariffs.

If she had any sense.

Yep. Should be a united front. No time for messing about worrying about Heritage Foundation etc.
