Anyone care to share their latest pet peeve? I’ll go first.

The tiny fluffy rectangular mics that almost everyone is is holding in one hand in their online reels and video content. We could hear them perfectly well before; whatever they relied on then.

Why would you choose to tie up one hand? In my mean spiritedness I suspect it makes them feel like roving reporters or foreign correspondents for TV. I’m irrationally irked by the sight of them.

I know there are bigger problems in the world, hence describing it as irrational and petty.

Any fellow grumpy bastards out there willing to share their own current bête noire?

It’s to show off their ridiculously long nails. I don’t know how they manage to wipe their arses.

LemaxObsessive · 10/01/2026 11:47

Omg yes! 👏🏻 I can’t stand it either. I also can’t stand it when these so-called creators ‘interview’ people on the street in the style of those quirky reporters with the big brightly coloured microphones 🎤 pointing it back & forth. Please just stop.

DinoLil · 10/01/2026 12:09

I came on to read about 'pet' peeves! I could list dozens about my dog! 😆

Omg! Me too, we have these sets for work and it's even more annoying when you realise that they are clips! You don't even have to hold them, they are literally designed to be clipped onto your clothes.

My pet peeves are these, plus the stupid long sleeves which I think are supposed to make them look smol and delicate, and the CONSTANT TWIDDLY TAPPING OF THINGS WITH THE STUPID LONG NAILS and breathe... 😡

Thundertoast · 10/01/2026 12:15

Oh my god thank you for this.

People at work who have drunk the kool aid of corporate bullshit. We dont work for a charity, we work for a corporate that makes money and would replace you in a heartbeat. Its not YOUR money or YOUR business so why in God's name are you acting like it is? Its really not real life, is it. Its not that serious, and there IS a way of getting stuff done with minimal corporate shit.

And on the other side...

People who moan endlessly about the corporate bullshit but dont realise that they just have to see it as a game to be played, and at our place you only need to give about 20% of effort towards the 'game' and you will be left alone! Just get on with it, there is a way of doing it with a wink to get people off your back!

And in general, the total reluctance from people to openly go 'we're doing this because it looks good further up the chain, and that might mean next year none of us lose our jobs and we get a payrise, even though its objectively pointless' why cant we just say that! Rather than pretend there's an operational reason! Visibility for the value our department adds in order to make us look useful is a good enough reason to do stuff, we dont need to pretend anything different... although of course we do, because people in my prior two pet peeves exist... arch.

For me, it's things that have become worse due to the invention of the internet.

DH went into the Doctors the other day to ask when his last Tetanus was (needed to know whether to have one before upcoming trip). Their response was to hand him an e-mail address and ask him to e-mail the question. Why? He was right there!

Companies that will only deal with you via the internet, when you really need to speak to a human.

Self check in and printing your own luggage tags at the airport - makes me panicky as I'm not quick enough.

"Computer says no" scenarios - Virgin have just put our package up from £33 a month to £78! I can mess around on line and get it down to £38, but I see on a comparison site, that I could actually get that same package with them for £23. So, I ring them up, and their computer will only offer me £40 a month. No way to over ride it. So now we are switching to Vodafone. Totally unnecessary when we have their router here and now have to get that taken out and replaced with another one. Gah!

Automated recordings when you phone companies. They mis hear everything you say!

The removal of Reps on holiday, replaced with Apps that no one ever answers. Had a huge problem with our hotel in Dominican Republic. Go onto the App and ask for help. No one ever replies. What's the point in that?

@abitgutted - I totally agree. I’ve been dealing with this with BA for the past 22 hours as a suitcase hasn’t left Delhi and I landed at Heathrow yesterday. Everything has to be done online and their website is glitchy as fuck and randomly crashes losing everything you’ve input up to that point or “Next” buttons don’t respond so you are stranded. There is no way to speak to someone on the phone. None whatsoever and you can’t even email. Laughably I want to raise a complaint about this process and the only way to do so is … by using the same process. I’ve probably spent 5 hours on this so far. They suggested on ChatBot that I try engaging with the website on another device, well I haven’t got another device because, amazingly enough, I’m not at work and didn’t carry a laptop to travel around northern India. We forked out for business class for this shit, more fool us. I’ll be sticking to Singapore and avoiding BA in the future.

The system is designed to frustrate and deter engagement.

What makes the whole thing even worse is that these stupid fluffy golf balls replaced small, discreet but just as effective lapel mics that you could barely see.

Why is the point of the videos now, to see the microphone?

Mossstitch · 10/01/2026 20:01

New system for drop off and pick up at manchester airport...............if you've done it you'll know what I'm saying 🤬 went to my usual overheight carpark to find they put a barrier up which wouldn't open despite trying credit card and pressing button for help. My passengers decided to get out and walk from the barrier, I'm aware that reg plate number taken and you have to go online to pay ...........which I did despite never actually getting into the carpark but now worrying that I'll get a ticket as the camera at the exit won't have clocked that I'd left (had to reverse back onto a roundabout to leave😚)

RyanFudgingMurphy · 10/01/2026 21:06

People not letting other people to get off the train first.
People not caring where their vape smoke goes. I do not want to partake alongside you.
Having to download an app and create a new account for everything, from booking an appointment at the local recycling centre (!) to ordering food in a restaurant (!!) to paying for parking (!🤬!). @abitgutted
Courier companies not having a phone number to ring when your parcel goes missing.
plus many other peeves…

YelramBob · 10/01/2026 21:22

I've got a gym peeve:

Fucking youngsters (Gen Z) sitting on machines glued to their phones. I don't even bother channelling my inner menopausal rage any more, I just ask tell them to move 🤬

And the half on/half off the shoulder look w/ hoodies/jackets when it leaves you useless to even talk or breathe as they attempt to sell another product no one needs.

mbonfield · 10/01/2026 21:30

Language over use of the word like and amazing!
Radio adverts that involve finance or terms and conditions and at the end of the advert someone speaks at an incredible speed, who understands what they have said 3 mins after. I am aware it has to be advertising standard approved but who in the advertising authority understands what they have said. Why not say terms and condition see XYZ

Please could add the word ‘super’ to your list. Why are we suddenly ‘super-excited’, ‘super-keen’ and ‘super-scared’. Maybe it’s ’super-obvious’ but it makes me ‘super-peeved’.

'bulky pee pants' advert

'Domino hoo-hoo' advert

I had to contact a company towards the end of last year. Every time I contacted them via their website, I got an automated response which didn't address my issue

I ended up finding their complaints departments email address and got it sorted

They don't have Facebook or X. The only way to contact them is Instagram

LlamaDuke · 11/01/2026 15:04

People on loudspeaker thinking that everyone wants to hear their music or the conversation they're having.

The incessant "coming up" in TV programmes that almost make it worthless watching it as they give so much away.

And, as a vegetarian myself, people asking me if I eat fish.

dizzydizzydizzy · 11/01/2026 15:09

People on public transport or in cafes having speaker phone calls or playing video without using headphones. About a year ago, I and one other woman were sitting in a small cafe early one morning. No other customers were there. She proceeded to have a 45-minute FaceTime call with her son. When I complained, she said it was ok because it was a special occasion because he had just arrived in Australia. I wouldn’t have minded that much if she’d kept it to under 5 minutes but having to listen to both sides of somebody else’s boring chat for the best part of an hour ruined my quiet breakfast and book reading time.

Fingalscave · 11/01/2026 15:10

That Co-op tv ad that sounds like they're shouting Oop diarrhoea!

Noisy theatre goers. Recently I saw Messiah and two women at the end of the row muttered all through. A man a couple of rows behind kept singing along in a flat, toneless voice. You'd think Messiah would be safe from irritating idiots.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 11/01/2026 15:16

Agree @abitgutted it really feels like progress for the heck of it with no purpose.

My pal had a late night flight cancelled while on the way to the airport, in a city with 2 young kids. She ran in to a cheap hotel, luggage and children in tow and asked for a room. She was told they have but it needs to be booked online. She asked them could they book it for her but they said no. Her mobile data was not working properly and she asked again, quite panicky at this point. Computer said no. She had to tearfully ring her DP who thankfully answered and waited until he booked it and phoned her back then waited for a screenshot to come through so she could show the receptionist and finally go to her room. It's like something from a comedy sketch sometimes.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 11/01/2026 15:21

The seasonal stuff in shops, why can't it just remain empty for a while. It stresses me, bloody Easter stuff and valentines stuff on display on 5 January. Halloween stuff up in August. Can't we ever just enjoy the season we are in.

I went shopping during a freezing spell end of Feb a few years ago desperate for warm clothing for my newborn. The shops were selling swimsuits and t shirts. They said they only get that stock in October, ffs baby was born early Jan and was bigger than anticipated. It's hardly unreasonable to expect some winter clothes in stock in winter.
