Friend keeps sending long voice notes instead of messages

GirouxSein · 09/01/2026 01:26

A friend has started sending voice notes for everything. Some of them are 5 minutes long and I often can’t listen straight away. It then feels rude when I reply hours later.
I know it’s probably meant to be more personal, but I find it a bit overwhelming and honestly prefer a normal message I can skim when I’m busy.

Hate them hate them hate them. And I tell my friends that. Once I was left one that was 13 minutes long, I said no way was i listening to that. The only reason I would listen to one is if that person was indisposed and unable to leave a normal text message.

muddyford · 09/01/2026 06:34

They are very convenient for the sender and a PITA for the receiver. I don't send them.

Kickinthenostalgia · 09/01/2026 06:45

I hate voice notes, luckily my friends know that and if they have to send me one they are never That long. Usually a quick recap that lasts no more than 20 seconds. I never send them.

2026x · 09/01/2026 06:45

Reminds me of a meme I saw which went something like;

”hey, I thought I’d send a voice note, because it’s quicker!”

”Quicker for who?”

I often have headphones in as I am on the phone for work so I don’t have to stop and listen so I don’t mind too much, plus my friend abroad sends them and I like hearing her voice. I get they can be annoying though

Mumsknot · 09/01/2026 06:46

Both my sisters do this and it drives me mad. But you can listen at 2x the speed which is what I do!

I’m a bit surprised at these people who have time to log into MN, start a thread, presumably read replies and answer them but still don’t have five minutes to listen to a message from a friend. Surely you just listen to them whilst you are doing something else that doesn’t require concentration?

Don't you think it ironic you will give time to me a complete stranger reading this message but not want to listen to a friend?

I can read mumsnet use my kindle online for hours but I can’t handle a podcast or audiobook it is like nails down a chalkboard to me. I’m sure if I was at school now I would be diagnosed with some auditory sensory issue but I just see it as we all have different preferences

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 09/01/2026 01:30

Ohhh nope I couldn’t handle that … it’s the person sending being lazy and putting all the work on the receiver…

Just respond either abruptly which I would -sorry don’t have time to listen to your Shakespearean monologue can you text me please

or nicely - if you have kids use them to your advantage

Lauren can’t listen to your voice notes as the kids listen in / I’m at work I’d prefer to communicate either face to face or over messages. See you soon

I wouldn’t then respond to voice notes only messages

i can’t stand voice notes they mean I can’t read I have to stop and listen to someone’s ramble

This is so extra... and makes op sound like shes got a stick up her backside.

Op, just a simple "hun, text me instead as everyone is around i can't listen to vn" Xxx

You're talking about reading mumsnet. The poster is talking about setting up a thread and then reading and responding to replies.

No- I was responding to the person showing amusement that people can’t handle voice notes from friends but can comment on mumsnet to strangers and I was explaining that mumsnet / audiobooks is different than text messages/ voice notes

No the poster wasnt talking about ppl who just comment. She was talking about ppl who start threads. Re read the post.

Comtesse · 09/01/2026 06:55

I haven’t listened to my actual voicemail for probably months, why would I listen to voice notes??

LOL at PPs saying “it’s like a conversation “ - no it’s not, it’s just a monologue, there is no back and forth. Awful!

Translate the voice note into text.

Or translate the vn to text and read

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 09/01/2026 07:01

Imagine if this thread was just a string of voiced opinions! Imagine all the accents.

JetFlight · 09/01/2026 07:01

There may be a legitimate reason.
My friend starting sending voice notes because she needs reading glasses and can’t always see the letters clearly enough to type.

Sailawaygirl · 09/01/2026 07:02

Tell them.
I like voice notes for my friends I can't see often. But it's by agreement and there never any obligation to listen or answer immediately.

I'm dyslexic and didn't it hard ti type long messages my friends have very busy live and can only message me on walks or have cornic fatigue.

NeverHadHaveHas · 09/01/2026 07:05

I love voice notes. My best friend and I regularly send long voice notes just chatting about the week. She has two under 18 months, I have two teenagers and a busy full time job so it’s very rare we would both be free to chat on the phone at the same time. Voice notes mean we keep in touch but can listen when it’s convenient and it’s nice to hear her voice. I listen to them when I’m driving, like a mini podcast

CrazyGoatLady · 09/01/2026 07:07

I hate them, but I do have a severely dyslexic friend who finds them really helpful. She is my exception. As long as they aren't long and rambling I don't mind.

Lovesacake · 09/01/2026 07:11

I find it much easier to listen to a voicenote as I can do that whilst carrying on with whatever I’m doing, if they send a text I cannot multi task I have to stop everything to read it

MargaretThursday · 09/01/2026 07:17

My phone has an objection to voice notes and regularly scrambled/ cuts them off

You can listen back at double speed on whatsapp!
Life changer!

shouldofgotamortage · 09/01/2026 07:20

I never listen to voice notes, i just delete them. Don’t want to hear a 5 minute monologue no thanks.

gamerchick · 09/01/2026 07:26

Tell her to stop.

I have a friend to likes to communicate with songs. So you guess at her mood. Fuck that shit. It was knocked on the head straight away.

Catwalking · 09/01/2026 07:28

I block all voicemail… I can’t be bothered to wade through the multiple crap 1’s to get to the rare useful 1! (& I’m retired 😆)
