Teams and always looking at my image

Is it just me? I never really look in a mirror - just a glance up while I wash my hands. But I have come to realise that I am always looking at images of myself during Teams calls at work. I wondered how I became so obsessed about how my fringe was lying, or shadows were highlighting my lines, or whether my glasses hid the bags under my eyes, when I never used to. But I now spend at least an hour a day on different Teams video calls and so I spend minutes every day considering how I look. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed this?

I have the same when it’s a restaurant with mirrors all around! I think it’s natural.

i will hide myself so i can’t see me and I also have the filters up to 100%.

Soft focus is in settings and more, change video settings, turn on soft focus

To hide your own image in a Microsoft Teams meeting (so
you can't see yourself, but others still can), find your video tile, click the three dots (...), and select "Hide for me" or "Remove from gallery (for me)"

Yes. I hate teams meetings, I don’t know where you’re supposed to look and when I look at myself I look too posed. I also sit really still and try to be formal, but my legs or feet are frantically tapping or i get a desperate urge to scratch my nose etc. Everyone manages to look to at ease and all I can focus on is my chin, or a bit of hair that’s in the wrong place.

I hate it, i always feel so self conscious when I smile or laugh. I have a slight soft focus but it doesn't stop the awkwardness.

Although my cat loves being on Teams calls so he blocks my face and people just see him posing and my voice😅

I blame Teams for me starting Botox. Too many meetings where I’d be looking at my tired looking face!

alondonerabroad · 07/01/2026 19:12

I’d done a lot of weights and fitness classes and one teams meeting I saw how buff my bare arms were in the teams call. I spent most of that call and the others subtly flexing all my arm muscles. The shadows showed up extra definition. It was great!
otherwise, most days I look a shocking mess.

Like other PPs, this was also the trigger for me getting Invisalign😄

I hate it. I'm at least 20 years older than anyone else in my team, and they always look so fresh-faced and taut. One thing that really helped was when I moved my desk to in front of an east-facing window. Now, as long as I can arrange my meetings for the morning, and it's sunny, I can just about get away with looking presentable. And at other times, I sometimes strategically hold a coffee cup to hide my turkey wattle neck.

Lighting is your friend here. I sit by a bright window which hides a lot of flaws. I've recently added a SAD light behind my laptop which works miracles. It doesn't work for SAD unfortunately, but it does work for vanity 😁.

I hate this too! It's not right to be looking at ourselves so much! This afternoon on a Teams call I did as some have suggested above and hid my photo which made for an infinitely better experience and is what I shall be doing from now on!

GOAT26 · 07/01/2026 21:16

Teams calls should be banned. I look normal in the mirror in the morning start a Teams call there I am looking like Miss Piggy!

I also hate hot-desking, hauling my kit around, sitting next to randoms and taking into monitors! Roll on retirement!

Yes, I have jowels like Donald Trump and I need a face lift!

Plastic surgery has boomed as we are all using Zoom and other apps like that more. For me, I like to ones with the built in filters, its the bloody bathroom mirror thats the problem!

GRCP · 07/01/2026 21:46

I do to - always look at myself during video calls.

11811B · 07/01/2026 21:53

I always hide myself otherwise your own image draws the eye, assumed everyone did tbh it's really quick I do it as soon as I log on

Minjou · 07/01/2026 21:56

Yes! I'm no oil painting anyway but I swear I'm so much uglier on teams....
