Very cold beach walk

We (2 x adults, 9yo, 7yo, dog) are considering driving an hour to the nearest seaside for a NYE walk tomorrow. The temperature is forecast to be dry, sunny and cold - 5 degrees, feels like 2!
There are dog friendly places we can eat lunch inside.
Is this a nice idea but in reality too cold to be enjoyable?

We live in Scotland do this every weekend in winter

momamia12 · 30/12/2025 20:38

No such thing as too cold, just the wrong clothing

Doone22 · 30/12/2025 21:18

Walk fast. Wear ear muffs.

Don’t let the DC in the sea. They will inevitably go in too deep or there will be a bigger wave than expected or a dog will come splashing past and, as soon as they get wet, they will get very cold very quickly.

@Middlemarch123haha I guess we’ll find out! What a lovely job. I’ve got a nutty spaniel cross and he loves a walk but I’m not sure he’ll brave the sea!

Ahem, and no photo? Me and my spaniel are going for a midnight woods walk tomorrow night to avoid the fireworks, but he would also love the beach.

grafittiartist · 30/12/2025 22:24

We do it every year on NYD. But do live quite near the coast. Perfect way to end/ start a year.
Enjoy!

LevBee13 · 30/12/2025 22:38

My partner, myself, our two year old in a carry backpack and our dog climbed up to Malham Cove as part of a 6 mile walk, in a temperature of 2 degrees (without factoring in wind chill) on Monday.
Wrap up warm and you'll be fine!

GlomOfNit · 30/12/2025 23:42

OP, it'll be fine. Just wear something you can pull over ears if necessary (hat, head band, ear muffs) as I always find dry winter wind can be very painful on my lugs! It does sound like you don't often venture outside if you're asking if this will be 'ok' - of course it will! It'll be bloody chilly and you'll really appreciate getting indoors after a good stiff walk, which is at least half the purpose, but the air right now is invigorating and refreshing!

Wish we lived close enough to the coast to do this, I'd dearly love to have a cold seaside walk in the middle of winter, but we're about as landlocked as you can be on this small island.

GRCP · 31/12/2025 09:32

We’re out every day with the dog but only in woodland near us so wasn’t sure about the seaside. Really looking forward to it now, thanks all. Lots of chippys, dog friendly pubs and options for hot chocolate along the way.
Thanks for tips on towels and blankets, boots and layers!

Wind makes the difference. A biting onshore breeze could send you running back to the car.

Otherwise, jusr keeping moving and you'll feel the cold less

Brendathebear · 31/12/2025 09:47

We live near the beach so often go with the dog.

Definately dress accordingly. I really feel the cold. My beach walking outfit currently is:

Jeans/thick socks/boots
Fleece long sleeve top/jumper/tightfitting bodywarmer
Padded coat and also one of those long beach coats ontop
Hat/scarf/gloves.

Dont underestimate how cold it gets, my list seems excessive but itll keep you toastie :-)

CaptainMyCaptain · 31/12/2025 14:10

We are doing that very thing right now. Staying in a camper van on the Yorkshire Coast. About to go for a walk now. Wrap up warm and embrace the fresh air.

Silverbirchleaf · 31/12/2025 15:27

Just driving back from nice walk along coast in south east. No wind so not too cold. If it wasn’t for everyone wrapped up in coats, looks like a summer day. Such blue sky.

As someone who lives 200 meters from a beach can I also recommend Sunglasses. Nothing like a sandblast to the eyes

I was going to say that. They’re a good idea on a beach in bright weather anyway but very much so if it’s windy…essential IMO.

GRCP · 31/12/2025 16:50

Well we had an absolutely lovely afternoon. Not too cold at all. We had chips one way and hot chocolate on the walk back, very busy and bright blue skies. Now back home and DDog is out for the count. Happy new year everyone!

Have a dip while you are at it...I will be. Obviously with all due precautions etc etc. I dont suggest for one minute you just go charging in if you havent done it before.

Cadogan66 · 31/12/2025 16:55

I love bright & chilly days! My absolute favourite time to take DDog to the beach. Paired with cosy pub lunch this sounds like a lovely idea, OP.

BellissimoGecko · 31/12/2025 16:58

Why on earth not? Wrap up well, with a hat, scarf and gloves. Sounds great.

Sounds perfect!Smile

WilfredsPies · 31/12/2025 18:33

@GRCP Did your dog try and make a break for the sea?

GRCP · 31/12/2025 19:29

@WilfredsPiesof course! 🤣

We were out today. Really cold but lovely in the sun. Sat outside ( Marco’s in Barry) for coffee. Lots of others out and about enjoying themselves. Made sandcastles on the beach with 2 year old and generally felt like we were on holiday.

QueenElle · 01/01/2026 00:21

I live close to the beach and go there most days with the dog. Make sure you wrap up warm and I think covering ears is key!! Nothing worse than the wind getting into your head so a hat or ear muffs and it’ll be gorgeous. My dog swims in the North Sea in all weathers - rather her than me!

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 01/01/2026 00:31

I read the OP as -5 and thought “that’s not too bad at all”.

I’ve been living in Maine too long…

This is my 10-day forecast. We walk on the beach tons and the dog loves it. The wind does make a big difference though. Last weekend I could no longer feel my nose after half an hour :-)
