Very cold beach walk

We (2 x adults, 9yo, 7yo, dog) are considering driving an hour to the nearest seaside for a NYE walk tomorrow. The temperature is forecast to be dry, sunny and cold - 5 degrees, feels like 2!
There are dog friendly places we can eat lunch inside.
Is this a nice idea but in reality too cold to be enjoyable?

I think it depends a bit on the children- will they be up for it?

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 30/12/2025 19:12

I genuinely can’t understand how you can think this is too cold.

-5 maybe.

caringcarer · 30/12/2025 19:13

Wrap up warm with coats, scarfs, hats and boots and tie your hair up if it's windy. If moving you shouldn't feel too cold. Take some hot chocolate in a flask just in case you can't find anywhere open. Always good to blow the cobwebs away providing not raining. The kids will run around and keep warm.

As someone who lives 200 meters from a beach can I also recommend Sunglasses. Nothing like a sandblast to the eyes

GloriousGiftBag · 30/12/2025 19:17

We often do this.

I make sure we all have enough layers and things like gloves and hats for the walk, plus blankets for the car and thermos of drinks. I take spare clothes for the youngest, as they're often required somewhere where water is involved.

I'd prebook for lunch if disappointment would ruin the plan

Happyasapiginmuck1 · 30/12/2025 19:17

I live by the beach and love to get out for a walk on it whenever I can. Just wrap up warm, cover your ears and enjoy! Make sure the kids are extra warm to reduce whinging!! 🙂

Vicliz24 · 30/12/2025 19:17

We did just that on Sunday . It was freezing but we were wrapped up and we took flasks of hot chocolate. Had chips for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Wrap up warm .

Shedmistress · 30/12/2025 19:19

Some of my friends go swimming on NYE or NYD so just driving and walking, is fine.

Middlemarch123 · 30/12/2025 19:20

I also wear gel feet warmer pads in my boots, and gel hand pads in my gloves, they really help. A snood, hat makes such a difference. And my cognito mug full of sweet tea.

Crunchymum · 30/12/2025 19:20

Sounds perfect and makes me hanker for a place by the sea (and a dog!)

Alas I live in Central London and have cats but your plan sounds fabulous @GRCP

Lightuptheroom · 30/12/2025 19:22

Plenty of layers that are easy to remove, plenty of towels particularly if dog travels on back seat so no one is stressing. We have 4 spaniels and live on the coast, they love it

FartyAnimal · 30/12/2025 19:23

We went for a walk all night the front in Eastbourne - same temperature a couple of days ago - it was fine. Just wear warm clothes and wooly hats!

LeafHunter · 30/12/2025 19:27

Fine if you have the right clothes.

ds (3) was out for a beach walk most days. He was in thermals, joggers, two socks, fleece, coat, snood, hat, salopettes, lined wellies. No complaining and walked/played for about two hours. Cousin (7) in tracksuit and coat was very cold very quickly.

Marble10 · 30/12/2025 19:28

Brrrr it’s not for me but realise I’m in the minority 😂

Namechangefor2026 · 30/12/2025 19:29

There’s no such thing as bad weather just the wrong clothing. I live 10 mins from the sea in NI and spent 20mins swimming in sea so the right clothing was a swimsuit. Very exhilarating (also cold!).

PlazaAthenee · 30/12/2025 19:30

Just wear decent outdoor clothes and layers. Wooly hats, neck buffs, thick socks, vests and gloves.
And coat if the dog needs it.

MyNattyCrow · 30/12/2025 19:31

My 5 year old and I went for a cold seaside walk today (it even rained a bit at one point). There were loads of people
out doing the same thing.

dress for the weather and it will all be lovely.

JustPlainStanfreyPock · 30/12/2025 19:32

We were also out today, cold and frosty but absolute flat calm sea, stunning blue reflecting the sky. No dog ourselves but there were plenty to go around!
Go for it. Needed a gilet under my coat, plus hat & gloves and long socks, cosy warm ☺️

Silverbirchleaf · 30/12/2025 19:35

Wrap up and you’ll be fine.

WarmGreyHare · 30/12/2025 19:37

I would absolutely do it. But with youngish children in tow I wouldn't make it a massively long walk, or at least he prepared to cut it short if everyone is cold and whiny and go for early lunch/ hot chocolate and cake or sth

whatwasthatnoise · 30/12/2025 19:39

We would do that with enough warm layers, especially for my ears! However, my kids would end up in the sea even if they had waterproof trousers and wellies... They're always like yeah mum, we won't get wet 🙄 Yeah, right!
So I pack a few towels and dry clothes/shoes for after, especially if you're going out for lunch.

Moellen54 · 30/12/2025 19:46

Im in North Wales . All our walks are cold and windy. A country park yesterday and probably the Promenade tomorrow. Wrap up and make sure there are coffee stops.

Justbreathagain · 30/12/2025 19:46

I had planned the same thing for tomorrow. Just me and my 2 year old but just checked the weather and it says it will be zero at 10am and feel like minus 3 !

whatcanthematterbe81 · 30/12/2025 19:47

I want to do this now

deste · 30/12/2025 20:02

We did it at the weekend at 1 degree. Just make sure you have warm clothes, ie hats scarves and gloves along with a warm coat. The only thing i wished i had done was to wear winter boots, my feet were frozen. It was lovely. I was in Finland two weeks ago in minus 8 but managed with salopettes and ski jacket.
