Is 14 degrees in the bedroom cold?

I think it's OK, if the bedding is warm enough? My nose is a bit cold. I'd rather it a bit hotter, but I'd have to heat the whole house to get the bedroom warmer. The living room has an open fire so that's toasty.

14C is fine for us.

FairViewRosie25 · 28/12/2025 22:57

I sleep in knickers and vest. Summerweight duvet on + fleece blanket
. Bedroom at 18 degrees window open plus fan on

FFSToEverythingSince2020 · 28/12/2025 22:57

All these people saying they love a cold bedroom! We keeps ours at 16 overnight and that’s a little on the cold side, but bearable if you stay in bed. Every night when I get up with pain around 3am, I turn it to 18. If it was 14? I’d need a heated blanket, a hot water bottle, and to be burned at the stake to keep warm. EDIT: My illnesses have made me really sensitive to hot and cold, unfortunately. Everyone else will still be fine, and I’ll be struggling to breathe in high summer or deep winter.

Perfect. Heard on the Today programme few months ago that people who sleep in bedrooms of 14 or slightly lower are less likely to develop dementia.

Because they die young from the cold!

Clockyclockz · 28/12/2025 23:00

I don’t like being too hot but 14 is way too cold for me.

thereare4lights · 28/12/2025 23:00

Mine's about 13 as our bedrooms are downstairs and heating is shit - radiator in our room barely comes on. I've learnt to like it. Have excellent PJs, socks and duvet.

HeddaGarbled · 28/12/2025 23:01

Why is Mumsnet obsessed with these numbers? If you feel cold, it’s too cold; if you don’t, it isn’t. Thread after tiresome thread: oh, I’m toasty warm at -2/icy at 22. Don’t live your life in thrall to the numbers!

lingmerth · 28/12/2025 23:02

Sounds perfect to me. We’ve turned the radiator off in our bedroom and have a window open. We have a 13.5 duvet and throw ( if needed) over us. I love being toasty in bed but can quickly cool down by sticking my leg or arm out.
Rest of house is set at 19c during the day while it’s colder.

14C is fine for us.

colder here for us usually, around 10 in the bedroom at night, have 13.5 duvets but leave the windows and door open. Around 16 around the flat during the day.

Family with grandchild here this week so we have the heating set at 20. We have to keep ducking outside to take deep breaths 😁

Songlines · 28/12/2025 23:04

Mine is currently 14° and it's perfect, for me. I'm likely to throw the 4.5 tog duvet off at some point overnight too.
I love that we're all so different

Fluffywabbits · 28/12/2025 22:41

It's freezing! My bedroom fluctuates between 10 and 14 over winter usually and I really struggle with it. Have a 15 tog duvet and 13.5 tog one on top of that to survive it.

I used to wear vest, pjs, bed socks and my dressing gown under my 15tog duvet to keep warm and enable myself to sleep when my bedroom temp used to hover around 12-13 degrees. It's not comfortable!

TheChosenTwo · 28/12/2025 23:07

Would be way too cold for me. We don’t have the heating on in the bedroom because dh runs hot, we have the window open through the night and sometimes he puts the fan on! I don’t really notice as I’m under a thick duvet and have an electric blanket directly on me. We both sleep naked. It’s 20 at the moment in my room; dh will most likely put the fan on when he comes home!

I’d probably cry at 14 in our room and I don’t ever cry 😂😂

carbonelthecat · 28/12/2025 23:07

That’s a cold night overnight for us, but perfectly doable with a winter duvet and thick pjs. Our bedroom goes down to around 12
at the lowest on the coldest nights, but we just stick an extra blanket on and I sleep brilliantly.

I couldn’t sleep in heated room overnight.

Dagda · 28/12/2025 23:07

It depends what you are used to. It’s not life threatening or anything. I’m so soft now after living a very well insulated house for the last 5 years. Our house didn’t even go down to 14 when the heating broke down in winter. But I grew up in a freezing cold old house. I used to leave the windows open here for ages. Now I feel a shiver when the temp drops to 18.

SlipperyLizard · 28/12/2025 23:11

We have ours at about that temperature in winter, needs an electric blanket or my feet never get warm but we only have 2 thin duvets on the bed and it is plenty warm enough for us.

Anything over 18 is officially “too hot”.

me24x · 28/12/2025 23:13

i would be so cold I wouldn’t sleep. Mine is currently at 21 and yes I’m fully aware this is way too hot for some. Each to their own

DurinsBane · 28/12/2025 23:16

No idea of temp, but radiator always off, fan on fast and big window open. I would guess single figures/low teens

gardenbouche · 28/12/2025 23:19

I hate a warm bedroom. No sure what mine is, but prob around 15 by the time I go to bed

billiongulls · 28/12/2025 23:56

Interesting, most people think it's perfect! I think I'd prefer maybe 16, but it's not easy to heat just one room plus it's very big room.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 29/12/2025 00:02

Do you leave the bedroom door open in the evening, so warmer air from downstairs can rise up and into that room?

PurpleLovecats · 29/12/2025 00:07

Perfect for me. Window open all year round. Use a summer duvet but have a throw if needed. Hot bedrooms give me a headache.

mondaytosunday · 29/12/2025 00:10

I prefer a cold bedroom and don’t have the heat on in there. I actually put my dog in a sweater as she doesn’t have much fur and think she might get cold.

What tog is your "thick duvet"?

ShetlandishMum · 29/12/2025 23:35

Too cold for me. We have 18C.

WarmGreyHare · 29/12/2025 23:36

No, plenty warm enough for me. I have an electric blanket I prewarm the bed with and then turn off and a thick duvet. Regularly waking up too hot ATM.
Hate a warm bedroom.
