What was your worst childhood meal?

Humour me while I’m waiting for everyone to wake up!
Dc asked us yesterday what our worst meals were when we were growing up, the one where the answer to ‘what’s for dinner?’ made your heart sink!
Mine was fish pie, dc1 was lamb hotpot, mil said liver and onions and db was spaghetti bolognaise. Anyone else bored and want to add?

Lambs liver with the tubes in it, dark green cabbage and mashed potatoes

SwirlyShirly · 25/12/2025 16:44

Liver, onions, bacon, gravy and mashed potatoes 🤢 I remember gagging so hard I had tears streaming down my face but week in week out, thursday was liver night

RuudGullitOnAShed · 25/12/2025 17:10

My mum was generally a great cook - but she used to make a spam stew - cubes of spam, with diced carrot and cubes of potatoes in a very thin gravy served with rice - it was awful.

Ihateoldfilms · 25/12/2025 17:16

My siblings and I were brought up that we had to eat what we were given or go hungry. However, I really can't remember not liking anything my DM cooked. I have never liked the skin on rice puddings but as a child I could always give that to my DB!

My mum was a terrible cook. She used to make an awful lamb stew that was thin and watery, but also greasy. My sisters and I absolutely hated it.

TheOliveFinch · 25/12/2025 17:57

Liver and onions , steak and kidney , lamb another one who became vegetarian as soon as I could, luckily as a child liked all vegetables apart from carrots which I still hate

ohreallyIsee · 25/12/2025 18:35

Smoked haddock, parsley sauce and mashed potato, even now smoked haddock is the one fish I can't eat.

Stuffed lambs heart another one, the tubes and gristle, ugh

Happyinheels · 25/12/2025 20:56

Pease pudding and faggots.

Hazlenuts2016 · 25/12/2025 21:02

Spam fritters as part of school dinners!

SarahAndQuack · 25/12/2025 21:10

Another liver one, because my mum always overcooked it.

Something that particularly annoyed me as an adult was that we were always told to eat what was on our plates and to be polite about food, so I did. Years later my mum said 'oh yes, Sarah always pretended to like liver, but the boys were much more honest!' as if this were a huge moral failing. Hmm

Obviously I must have annoyed her grimly swallowing it down (we used to try to wash it down with water or hide it in the mash) and then saying politely that it was nice, but she was the person who insisted we should do that!

SarahAndQuack · 25/12/2025 21:22

Oh ... and custard. For ages I thought custard was meant to be sweetened scrambled egg suspended in watery milk. I didn't understand why people liked it.

At some point my mum served it (she made it in the microwave by the time I was grown up, but it was exactly the same however she made it) to a new partner of mine, who said (not politely, but assuming it was obvious) 'oh dear, your custard has split'. Mum, defensively, said 'oh, I like a nice English-style custard like this'.

Later on said partner showed me how to make proper custard - and it was lovely - and one day when I was making dinner at mum's I asked it I could make it to see if she liked it. I made lovely, normal custard with vanilla in it, and she looked highly suspicious, told me it wasn't 'thickened' enough, whisked it off me, and popped it in the microwave ... so it scrambled.

I conclude she genuiely does prefer scrambled eggs!

(Oddly enough, she almost never cooks actual scrambled eggs and acknowledges she can't make them.)

Liver and onions 🤢

CalzoneOnLegs · 25/12/2025 21:49

some of these posts are so sad, children crying and gagging, it’s awful and I am so sorry you went through that.

CalzoneOnLegs · 25/12/2025 21:51

@SarahAndQuack agree, proper custard that you can buy made with cream and vanilla is beautiful. (Ive never made any) That horrible birds custard powder should be banned under the trade descriptions act.

I was force fed at nursery mouth held open and made to eat boiled cabbage and butter beans and they always made a reappearance.
Early 1970s.

@TheCooperettesShingaLing that’s awful 😢

Spam fritters as part of school dinners!

Disgusting 🤮 At least you could leave your school dinners though

BartholemewTheCat · 25/12/2025 08:33

Tinned salmon sandwiches. Bit into one and the soft bone hadn’t been squashed properly. Boak.

Just reminded me of chicken paste sandwiches 😂 they were always gritty 🤢

Remember that grease laden tray oh and the scoop of cold mash😋😋

dizzydizzydizzy · 25/12/2025 22:03

Liver and onions!

SnowDaysAndBadLays · 25/12/2025 22:03

My Mum was a great cook, we generally had lovely meals, but for some insane reason she made fish and chips and served it with tinned peas which we all hated, and she insisted on giving up broad beans with the horr6greg, wrinkly skin.
Absolutely baffling as to why.

mum2jakie · 25/12/2025 22:04

Liver and onions. Heart! Vile.

EmeraldDreams73 · 25/12/2025 22:05

Oh God. Liver. Faggots. Tough braising steak which took 3 business days to chew. Bleurgh.

WilfredsPies · 25/12/2025 22:05

My mum was a pretty reasonable cook, but I do remember her making me eat tinned spaghetti on toast once. I refused and clamped my mouth shut and the sod held my nose closed until I opened my mouth to breath, then shoved the fork in my mouth 😂 Still don’t like that stuff.

My worst meal was at Junior school. A portion of liver swimming in what could only be described as juice, boiled carrot slices and plain pasta. Our dinner ladies had a ‘clear your plate’ policy but even they turned a blind eye on those days.

winterbluess · 25/12/2025 22:05

Did anyone get fed those dried vesta curries?? The "beef" was powdery and never dehydrated properly, but I loved them 🤣 what is it with bad cooking in the 90s?
