How many jobs have you had?

notsuperbug · 22/12/2025 18:06

I was filling out an application form which demanded I list all jobs and gaps since leaving school. It took me a while and I wonder if I have had more jobs than most people?

I counted up - 19 including a couple of career breaks and vacation work at uni- and for clarity I am 50. Is this a lot? or fairly typical nowadays?

Three. First one redundancy after 22 years. Second job I quit after 8 months because the owner had no morals and was a nightmare to work for. Current job been there 16 years.

ZenZazie · 22/12/2025 19:47

At 50, I’ve had 25 jobs if you include part-time stuff when I was young. DH has only had 3, two of which were p/t whilst studying. Well,
to be fair he’s had more than one job at the same place.

GreenMarigold · 22/12/2025 19:48

6 temp jobs before/during uni and 3 permanent jobs since

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 22/12/2025 19:51

4 after uni, now 51. Did McDonald’s through uni. I had a couple of very shite sales jobs post 16 - one for Marlboro (!) and one for Pepsi

firstofallimadelight · 22/12/2025 19:58

I’m 45 not including part time jobs from age 14-18 I’ve had 14 jobs but 4 of those were part time to supplement self employment. My longest role was 10 years. A mix of child care, hospitality, supermarket and customer service . I also had 3 years as a sahp.

Youcunnyfunt · 22/12/2025 20:03

If I had to count ALL jobs (not just agencies) then probably around 30… not even going to try and remember all of them. Not considering the pub work, babysitting, catsitting and (clothed) life modelling I did at school under 16!
During college and uni I did a lot of temp work every single break and I worked freelance, which I also started at 15.
I’ve had 4 full time employers but part time work and freelance as second jobs over the years.
I’ve done self employment, agency temp work, worked under an umbrella company, worked at large corporations, small family companies and everything in between. I worked my way up to the top to board level!

Enko · 22/12/2025 20:05
  1. 2 of which were promptions within the same company. 3 were summer jobs as a teen. Mid 50s
taxguru · 22/12/2025 20:06

5 jobs, all full time over the first 20 working years and then self employed for the remaining 20 years. Never a day out of work. Started my first job the Monday after leaving school on the Friday, and all subsequent changes were also leaving on the Friday and starting the new on the Monday.

blankcanvas3 · 22/12/2025 20:06

Just 1, I’m 33.

Alpacajigsaw · 22/12/2025 20:06

I’m 52 and on my 7th since I left university in 1995. I had a couple of student jobs as well when I was at uni.

FinallyHere · 22/12/2025 20:14

65 this year,

ignoring part time jobs during full time education, I’ve had five ‘career’ roles , durations two years, ten years, four years, two years and my current role since 2002.

Hoping to hang onto this one for as long as ever possible while accepting that given it’s an international corporate, at some point they will dispense with my services.

WhoamItoday11 · 22/12/2025 20:19

I am at 20. This includes different roles at the same employer. 13 different employers. I did a bit of temp/contract work, so there are some 6 month and 1 year jobs in there.

EBearhug · 22/12/2025 18:31

Including Saturday/holiday jobs, at 53, I'm on about 15 - one of which was 19 years.

If we're not including student jobs, it's 8.

Makingpeace · 22/12/2025 23:36

13 different employers since leaving uni. Age 40.

That doesn't account for multiple roles within the same company - that would make it about 15.

Makingpeace · 22/12/2025 23:37

...But if we're including student jobs! Then add 4 more.

Makingpeace · 22/12/2025 23:38

blankcanvas3 · 22/12/2025 20:06

Just 1, I’m 33.

One job, or one employer?

ViciousCurrentBun · 23/12/2025 02:28

4 summer jobs as a kid
6 grown up jobs, one was a move with the same employer.
Of those I retrained totally twice and studied for just over a decade whilst working FT.
Now retired.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 23/12/2025 02:46

7 and retired.

AdoreTheChaos · 23/12/2025 05:43

Since leaving school, 2. First for 16 years until I was made redundant and I’ve been where I am for 21 years. I’m 54. I’ve had different roles with each employer though.

VegQueen · 23/12/2025 06:12

I am early 30s and I’ve had 14 most of those are part time or summer jobs I had while studying. Tbh there might be a few I’ve missed as even while writing this, I remembered an extra one. Since graduating, I’ve had 5 jobs with 3 employers.

I honestly don’t think I’d put down all of my jobs on an application form even if they asked, some I can’t remember the name of the employer e.g. I did waitressing at events through an agency and I honestly have no idea how I’d find out the agencies name now

FoFanta · 23/12/2025 06:20

I'm 52 and I've had 22 jobs - did lots of part time bits and bobs when I was younger and changed jobs lots. Since training as a midwife 20 years ago I've worked in three hospitals and had 6 different jobs within midwifery. My current role is the longest I have ever done anything. I really enjoy it, think I'm pretty good at it and have done and continue to do loads of extra training/education so I can continue to improve and offer a really good service to the women that I support.

OttersMayHaveShifted · 23/12/2025 06:21

I'm 54 and gave had 14 including temporary jobs and very part-time student ones. A few of them were concurrent though.

onceagainforrose · 23/12/2025 06:52

Three employers since my early 20s, across which I’ve had 7-9 jobs (some were secondments, and I’d list them differently depending on what I was applying for) plus a couple of holiday jobs. 44.

RedRiverShore6 · 23/12/2025 07:01

Four of longer than 5 years and various short temp jobs in between when made redundant from three of the four longer jobs

TheMorgenmuffel · 23/12/2025 07:13

Four. Then went into business for myself.
