DH beaten up today...

... For being a cyclist.

A fairly common story. Van driver was annoyed at being held up, so passed at speed and very close (we're talking centimetres...), leaning on the horn. DH's bike hit a pothole (couldn't avoid it due to said van), swerved and clipped the van. The driver took offence at this (despite causing it....), jumped out of the van and started laying into my husband. His passenger then jumped out and joined in. Both vehicles are undamaged but my poor DH is sporting two black eyes and cuts on his cheekbones from him glasses.

And before anyone starts, yes he was on his bike, yes he had every right to be there, no wasn't riding like an arse, and even if he had been, that never justified violence.

DH is shaken up but OK. I am incandescent with rage ...

FFS what is wrong with people!!!

Small dick men who need to prove they’re hard.
Its embarrassing.

I hope your DH is ok.

Hfiajfbdoflv · 20/12/2025 21:30

This is awful. As a cyclist who rides safely and legally I’m always shocked at the amount of abuse that I get. People are so angry.

RonaldMcDonaldTrump · 20/12/2025 21:57

If it was a quiet country road then couldn't they just overtake him, the stupid bastards.

I hope your DH is ok. And I hope when he clipped their van, he did some decent damage

Horrorscope · 20/12/2025 22:01

Awwww, I hope he’s OK… xx

CornishTiger · 20/12/2025 22:01

Absolutely disgusting. I hope the police capture them. I wonder if other motorists may have seen the vehicle before/after. Spread the word locally.

countrygirl99 · 20/12/2025 22:03

I don't cycle these days but I do ride a horse and I've come across these type of knobheads far too often. Sadly on rural roads there's little chance of CCTV picking them up so I ended up buying a GoPro. Very effective at improving driving.

Dappy777 · 20/12/2025 22:25

Well those two imbeciles ought to be in prison.

Van and cyclist bit is irrelevant. Your DH was attacked by a couple of arseholes looking for a fight. I hope he presses charges and he will be understandably shaken up and upset.

Thank you all for your kind wishes. I haven't seen the removed posts and I'm quite grateful for that!

I'm not sure I agree the van/bike part is irrelevant. Yes, they were arseholes, but DH got assaulted precisely because he was on his bike and held them up.

I agree that it's time for a GoPro, and really hope that, if they are tracked down they get the book thrown at them. We're not hopeful though.

DH is ok this morning. He's quite stoical usually, and at present is still determined to keep cycling. He's been a cyclist for 30+ years and is refusing to let this incident get in the way of that.

Poor bastard. I’m so sorry he had to go through that, what bad luck yo be stumbled upon by such a pair of brain dead thugs.
I don’t cycle but I do ride and the amount of pricks who seem to take pleasure in passing my horses and I too close and/or too fast is unbelievable. Or perhaps very believable judging by this post! My sympathies to your husband.
Going forward, a go pro would be a must, for me!!

Londonnight · 21/12/2025 07:28

I am really sorry that this has happened to your husband. My adult son's are cyclist and things like this worry me when they go out on their bikes.
I hope that they manage to catch the abusers.

Owly11 · 21/12/2025 07:37

Can you give more detail - you say they jumped out of the van and layed into your husband - do you mean they assaulted him as soon as they jumped out or was there an argument first. What exactly happened? It feels like there is a bit missing from your story of how it went from them jumping out of the van and your dh getting two black eyes.

She gave enough details in her OP to clear up any doubt that her husband was attacked by two thugs.🙄

What makes you think i am doubting he got beaten up? And why do you care if i ask op for more detail. If she doesn't want to answer she doesn't have to.

Wayk · 21/12/2025 18:52

Those people are animals. Hope your husband is ok. Please keep on top of this. If your husband fell during the beating he could be brain damaged.

AwfullyGood · 21/12/2025 19:26

Bloody hell, that's horrendous.

It's shit that the police can't identify them or seem to have put much effort into trying.

Pollyanna87 · 21/12/2025 19:39

How awful. Haven’t RTFT, so sorry if someone else has said this, but it’s always a good idea for cyclists to wear cameras. They shouldn’t have to, but they need to, sadly.

PodMom · 25/12/2025 09:38

I see the police are appealing for witnesses/information, saw the post on fb from the police today. Hopefully someone comes forward.

Tollington · 25/12/2025 09:57

For all the cyclists and horse riders on here, it’s worth noting that my local police force (Warwickshire) won’t investigate an incident like this without a witness or cctv

I had a close pass on a single track country lane, the car’s wing mirror must have been a few cm’s from hitting me. When I called the rural section of the force about it I got a recorded message to say they won’t investigate without a witness/cctv

That’s when I bought a Cycliq camera

Claradiplomatique · 25/12/2025 15:54

These “men” are probably spending Christmas pretending to be upstanding husbands / fathers. How can they live with themselves knowing what they did?

Yes, look at Paul Doyle, an outwardly responsible family man.
Inwardly, still a violent thug.

chunkyBoo · 26/12/2025 15:37

That’s disgusting! I really hope they’re caught and they press
charges
