DH beaten up today...

... For being a cyclist.

A fairly common story. Van driver was annoyed at being held up, so passed at speed and very close (we're talking centimetres...), leaning on the horn. DH's bike hit a pothole (couldn't avoid it due to said van), swerved and clipped the van. The driver took offence at this (despite causing it....), jumped out of the van and started laying into my husband. His passenger then jumped out and joined in. Both vehicles are undamaged but my poor DH is sporting two black eyes and cuts on his cheekbones from him glasses.

And before anyone starts, yes he was on his bike, yes he had every right to be there, no wasn't riding like an arse, and even if he had been, that never justified violence.

DH is shaken up but OK. I am incandescent with rage ...

This is awful, I’m so sorry OP.

You've not seen the anti-cyclist posts on here then? Unfortunately MN can be very anti-cyclist. Not trying to be antagonistic, though yes perhaps over-defensive.

Unfortunately whilst he was with a group, he had gone on ahead up a hill and it was all over by the time they caught up, and I don't think anyone was wearing a Go-pro or similar. And no houses on that particular stretch as it's very isolated.

I think it’s understandable that you’d feel defensive after such a horrible shock, poor DH, some people are pure evil.

And you’re picking on someone who’s just had a hideous shock, do better.

AorticValve · 20/12/2025 18:55

This is horrendous. I am so sorry. I have mostly stopped cycling because of this sort of attitude. I should get a camera. It might help me be brave enough to start going back out again.

I got knocked off about 5 years ago in the covid era, by a driver that simply did not look. She was so apologetic. Not so the white van man who stopped to look at my lying in the road and told me I 'fucking deserved it'.

PS have reported the revolting and unnecessary post upthread. It is not antagonistic to know that there are anticyclist aresholes on MN.

Audience, is that how you see yourself? This isn’t a play, this is a real person you are responding unhelpfully to.

Your last post got deleted for breaking guidelines so not sure why you’re reposting your accusation.

Because somebody reported it.

stuff doesn’t get deleted just because it’s been reported. It actually has to break guidelines you know. So someone who works for mnhq will look and see if it should be deleted or not. You’ll probably get an email warning you to be nicer or be banned.

Ilovemyshed · 20/12/2025 19:12

Awful. Time for a Go Pro?

AorticValve · 20/12/2025 19:12

You do know that posts only get deleted if a guideline is broken, not just because someone reports it? There is only one person being antagonistic on this thread and it is not the OP, who is justifiably angry.

TicklishReader · 20/12/2025 19:15

Jesus Christ, how awful. Has he been seen by a doctor?

It's sickening that they could get away with this.

TheGrimSmile · 20/12/2025 19:16

It doesn't surprise me when you read some of the vile anti-cyclist posts on here. I blame the likes of Jeremy Clarkson who makes it seem funny to hate cyclists. Dick. It's no wonder so many get killed on the road. The law needs tightening.

cadburyegg · 20/12/2025 19:20

That’s awful op so sorry. The hatred against cyclists is something else.

CheepCheep6 · 20/12/2025 19:26

Horrible bastards, I how they don’t evade justice.

I also would recommend a camera because these types of lunatics who are itching for a fight exist and being a cyclist makes you much more vulnerable.

It makes no sense for the person in a multi-ton metal box to be angry at a cyclist, but it seems these types are just on a hair trigger.

Pedallleur · 20/12/2025 19:54

Jorvik1978 · 20/12/2025 17:56

Unfortunately not yet. This was on a quiet country lane so no witnesses. They drove away and whilst the police are involved, either they have a false plate or DH didn't get the registration right (which is probably more likely given the circumstances).

Is there no camera footage from the area? Sorry to hear this. Don't let him dwell on it and be frightened to go out. I've had a couple of moments where I have thought I might be attacked or killed. I try to not engage but in this case it was forced on him.

Egglio · 20/12/2025 19:57

Van and cyclist bit is irrelevant. Your DH was attacked by a couple of arseholes looking for a fight. I hope he presses charges and he will be understandably shaken up and upset.

Thortour · 20/12/2025 20:02

I hate people like this. My best friend was riding her bike and was killed by a van driver who just lost his temper and overtook her when there was no space.
My OH used to train for Ironman and he has had cars and vans swerve at him.
I'm so furious at how cyclists are treated.
I'm sorry your DH has experienced this.

IF YOU WANT TO FORM A POSSE I'M HAPPY TO COME AND SMACK THIS AWFUL MAN.

Escapetothecatshome · 20/12/2025 20:20

I do hope he’s okay that’s so awful, there was an phone in on LBC with Shelia fogarty last week discussing abuse cyclists receive on the road, it’s such a big problem.

Minniliscious · 20/12/2025 20:23

Aww that’s awful - horrible to happen at any time but just before Christmas as well 😢 Sendings hugs to you all OP, look after him. He must be so shaken up. What violent, aggressive wankers that he had the misfortune to encounter.

bignewprinz · 20/12/2025 20:25

So many inpatient, intolerant pigs in cars/vans/lorries these days. Sorry this happened to your DH. Wishing him a speedy recovery 🙏

JohnofWessex · 20/12/2025 20:42

While its on a slightly different area

https://www.pacts.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/Ghost-Plate-Inquiry-1.pdf

shows how 'road traffic' law and enforcement has been neglected by successive governments

There also seems to be significant issues about the 'policing' of light commercials. These are business vehicles so if you are playing the fool with them then you should get your business closed and your licence taken away.

Finally why do we allow offenders to hold driving licences? What about a 'fit and proper' test so if you - for example assault another road user, carry drugs/weapons/stolen property in your vehicle you lose your licence

QuirkyHorse · 20/12/2025 20:46

Your poor dh, what a dreadful thing to happen.

Did none of his fellow riders get the numberplate?

He needs a GoPro.

Rowgtfc72 · 20/12/2025 20:53

Hope your dh is OK. I do 9 miles a day for work. I've been shouted at, cut up and beeped at. Fortunately noones got out to me yet.
Many anti cyclist posts on our local newsfeed. Most along the lines of all cyclists should be mowed down and killed.

CalmShaker · 20/12/2025 21:14

It's not safe to cycle in the UK anymore, the condition of the roads are appalling and the increase in traffic and anger of drivers has got so bad in the last 5 years.
