Anyone else have this virus with a really painful sore throat?

If so, has anything helped you with the pain? If not, I sympathise.

Had this for 2 weeks so far. Started on one side of the throat, swollen one side which then switched sides and switched back again. GP recommended a throat spray which hasn't helped. Fair enough little that she can do as antibiotics don't help with a virus.

Having been living on hot tea, soup and cold ice lollies! Worse at night and first thing. Currently can't sleep as the pain is keeping awake. So up again drinking yet more tea.

I find it difficult to gargle so can't try the saltwater thing. Stressing and lozenges seem to tickle making it worse. Cough syrup hasn't helped.

I've never had such a sharp painful throat.

You poor soul @TissuesSnotCough.
I currently have just the aches. Am really hoping it doesn't get worse.

Hope we both get some sleep soon.

I had exactly this about a month ago. Started one side, moved to both side, and then just the other side. I tested for covid and it was negative. It did go by itself eventually. Cough came along after, but it wasn't too bad. I also had a bad stomach for a while too. The whole thing did last weeks but the throat thing was the worst and when that cleared up I felt so much better and I was able to function. Like you, I was up in tbe night a lot with the throat. Made me realise how much we swallow in our sleep!

Rest up.

I've had the sore throat since Monday, getting worse by the day. I started coughing last night. Really hoping this is short lived as I am going away for Christmas.

I’ve been awake for two hours cos of the razor blade throat so joining in solidarity.
it’s worse in the night and first thing in the morning.

OP, i know you said you find gargling difficult, but if you can, I can't recomend soluble Aspirin, enough. You need the 300mg dose. Dissolve two tablets and gargle, then swallow. The granules sit on your throat and kill the razor sharp pain very effectively, also giving you systemic relief by swallowing.
Obviously, only take it as long as you don't have any contraindications to Aspirin or other anti-inflammatories. You can take Paracetamol with it/alternate it. Try to take with food. Take 6 hourly.
I agree that getting Strep throat eliminated would be a good thing, as that would warrant antibiotics ( probably Doxycyline)
I do hope you rally soon. It's a bastard virus.
You really have my sympathies🌷

Had the same thing, sore throat lasted 3 and a half weeks…. Sorry for the bad news!

Mine started with a sore throat so hopefully yours won't develop the same way. One of my teen dcs has it now but nowhere as bad fortunately so it affects people differently unless there's just a myriad of viruses out there.
Didn't wake up as many times which is surprising as I drank tons of tea! So you would think the loo would've been a calling!

Woke up at 7am but feel tired so maybe will have a little afternoon nap.......Take care of yourself. Hope u feel better soon.

Not everyone is getting it as bad by the looks of it so hopefully the same for you. I'm at home for Christmas so am fortunate there.

Hope yours clears in time before you travel.

I’ve had it since Weds and it’s awful! Thought I was getting better yesterday but today have absolutely no voice at all and throat feels like sandpaper.

Same. Was better this morning and have been losing my voice throughout the day. The diflam spray helped the knives throat but I nearly gagged spraying the last lot!

Hopefully will sleep better tonight. Just taken 2 paracetamols. Hope you feel better soon.

The knives in the back of my throat is back with a vengeance this morning! SO painful. Anyone else's improved yet? I can't believe how long this is lasting for.

Are you alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen for the pain?

I'm not in the UK and my GP would absolutely see me for a sore throat like that, and do a strep test, and give antibiotics if positive.

I find the attitude where you have to suffer with something for 3 weeks before you can even see a doctor really disturbing. I was just diagnosed with pneumonia after only five days of coughing and wheezing!

Yes I have been. I did have an appt and was told the swelling in the throat was just a virus so no treatment available. Was thinking today that I'll ring the surgery tomorrow and ask for a swab as also thinking strep but I don't know how long the results would take to come back. Blood tests take a week.

Exactly! Hope you're feeling better. I'm still the same. Was hoping to return to work tomorrow-no chance. I don't think anyone would thank me for passing it on and ruining Christmas for them.

Thank you @TissuesSnotCough
My throat is no worse, but now I have a persistent tickly cough which is worse when I lie down.
I just feel wiped out.
Sorry to hear you feel no better

Gingerwarthog · 22/12/2025 15:00

Yup - succumbed yesterday evening. Razor throat, rivers of snot and don’t want to eat or drink any wine (well I do but can’t bear the taste). Feel sick but haven’t been sick. Shivering. Wiped out. Enough energy to read a book - that’s it.

DH and DD have cleaned the house and are making me regular cups of tea. All shopping done and DM is bringing some food with her. Dog is chilled.
Bless them.

Gingerwarthog · 22/12/2025 15:01

Hoping it’s the flu as they’ve all been jabbed.

Gingerwarthog · 22/12/2025 15:03

Might try to go downstairs and watch Shetland while they’re out. Wish me luck.

Oh yes-the tea!! I've drunk so much tea! Went to my surgery. Apparently I've probably been infected twice. Was advised to go full out on paracetamol and ibuprofen-8 x paracetamol and 6 x Ibuprofen daily until I feel better. Slept a full night last night although was still awake at 6 with razor throat!

That's lovely that your family are rallying round. Good luck with watching Shetland in peace. Hope you manage to stay awake. I was watching those "no story content whatsoever" christmas films so that I didn't have to concentrate on anything too taxing at the beginning of all this.
I think the medication is helping so starting to feel a bit better. Hope you feel better soon.

just about managing to follow the plot!

Joining in. Started with a horrific sore throat on Thursday that seems to keep coming and going. Completely lost my voice over the weekend. Combined with a fever, snot, chesty cough (blood in phlegm!), nausea, sickness and lack of appetite. I am livid as I have lovely food and snacks in the house and I want none of it. The usual remedies aren’t touching the sides. Managed to get an emergency GP appointment today and they have put me on antibiotics but they did warn they might not do anything if it is viral. Luckily DH has been a superstar and is doing everything with DD while I wallow in self pity.

Sorry to hear about the blood whilst coughing-must've have been scary but glad you managed to get an appointment. My GP won't give antibiotics for a virus. Feel so
much better having the paracetamol and ibuprofen.
My voice was also coming and going. Still a bit hoarse now.
As for food, I get you....all I could bare to have was soup and tea. Anything remotely crispy/scratchy-chips, toast etc just set me on edge. I found boiled/mashed very appealing but couldn't eat much of it.
Hope you feel better soon and in time to be able to eat your goodies.
