Butcher substituted my turkey

Okay, so maybe I’m just wanting to rant.

I received a text (yes, a flippin’ text) from the butchers saying my Christmas turkey has been substituted for 12 turkey breast roulades and my collection time will be between 4pm - 5pm on Christmas Eve

I rang them, as firstly I’d booked the 9am collection (and paid £5 for the privilege) and most importantly I don’t want 12 turkey breast…. After much back and forth (and very little apology from them) I asked for a refund which they agreed to, however was told “this most likely won’t be processed until the New Year”

Please tell me what would you have done, DH thinks it’ll be in my bank my Monday, and I know I can go to a supermarket but I’m still really annoyed, I’ve been Googling ways to cook turkey roulades and when you read they’re often really dry… as was half tempted to just accept them

I would be marching straight down there, insisting they refund me, as well as providing me with a turkey and few choice words about what i think of the service they have provided.

Candleabra · 19/12/2025 21:00

That’s really dreadful. Of course you don’t want a substitution at Christmas and they should be grovelling at such a horrendous cock up.

If it’s any consolation, there were loads of turkeys in the supermarket today (and loads even on Xmas eve last year).

Absolutely awful and speaks of disorganisation on the butchers part. Our local butcher is amazing, books open in September and he does his absolute upmost to ensure his customers get what they ordered. He doesn't take payment until collection and certainly doesn't make you book a slot. You just have to let him know what day you would like to collect. I know for a fact that if he didn't have a bird your weight he would not be offering roulades. He would find a farmer with birds of that weight or as a last resort offer you a smaller bird and a crown and offer you something extra for free to say sorry.

He is an absolute gem though; he saved me litres of his beef stock when I was pregnant (pregnancy craving). Deboned, mini filleted, diced, deskinned all my chicken legs/ breasts for me when I was pregnant as I couldn't handle preparing meat. He just used to ask "what are you making with this?" And then prep the meat up for me so I could just put it in a pan/ oven/ airfyer. Makes my daughter skinless sausages because she told him one day she doesn't like the skin and he just said, no worries I'll make you some without skins. This year he's going to roll my sausage stuffing into balls for me (he sells it in long tubes) and put them in an foil oven tray to go straight into the oven to save me the prep as I have a very young baby. He's prepping all the turkey for me (taking all the giblets out) to save me a job (sells all his whole turkeys with giblets in for gravy).

Unless you booked your turkey last week, it is absolutely awful service and I would complain, expect a full refund and not shop there again.

Fiftyandme · 19/12/2025 21:02

Their customer service is awful. Leave a shitty review wherever you can

RobertaFirmino · 19/12/2025 21:05

LML1989AL · 19/12/2025 20:29

They didn’t really go into detail, said something about not having enough birds at the weights that were needed, which is why I think I was offered roulades, as I think they must have only skinny birds 🤣

Perhaps all the turkeys have been on the Mounjaro this year?

Gingercar · 19/12/2025 21:07

LML1989AL · 19/12/2025 20:45

Oh god, I’m not that brave nor do I really have time to be arrested for breaching the peace 🤣

Fair enough, but definitely leave an honest review of (a) what happened and (b) their lack of remorse and the mention that a refund may take a while.
My husband got a frozen turkey with a great discount on the price yesterday.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 19/12/2025 21:09

Oh God I’d be absolutely fucking furious!! Definitely leave a shitty review. Sending you a text like that is outrageous. They really should have phoned you and known that the “substitute “ would not do.

Tessisme · 19/12/2025 21:12

Gagagardener · 19/12/2025 20:59

Has your turkey really been substituted for 12 roulade, or replaced by them?

There’s always one🙄

Pedants’ Corner is the place for this stuff. Hope you got your little thrill.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 19/12/2025 21:12

I'd never use the butcher again. Totally unacceptable.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 19/12/2025 21:15

Whoa! Yanbu at all!!!

shellyleppard · 19/12/2025 21:15

Name and shame on Facebook. My butcher doesn't take any payments till collection as he doesn't know exactly how much it will cost.

Tinkerbellthefairy · 19/12/2025 21:16

Figcherry · 19/12/2025 20:22

I would be in the shop tomorrow asking for the refund including the £5, preferably when they are really busy.

This.

Lougle · 19/12/2025 21:17

ALDI has lots of turkeys. Not quite the same as your pre-ordered butcher turkey, but I would get down there tomorrow and sort the butcher after.

Copiousamountsofpulses · 19/12/2025 21:18

Honestly I think some of your reactions are mental, poor form from the butcher but they have given you 6 days notice and attempted to try and give you an alternative. I'm sure you will find something suitable, not ideal you have to go out and do that but there is a hell of a lot worse that could happen at this time of year!

Espressosummer · 19/12/2025 21:20

ToadRage · 19/12/2025 21:00

I would be marching straight down there, insisting they refund me, as well as providing me with a turkey and few choice words about what i think of the service they have provided.

Well that would be pretty daft since if they had the bloody turkey none of this would have happened.

NearlyXmasy · 19/12/2025 21:23

We book a slot for collection but don’t have to pay. Booking a slot is beneficial for everyone as it stops everyone arriving at the same time.

TeamGeriatric · 19/12/2025 21:26

The only positive being they told you on 19th December, and you have time to source a replacement. In 2016 I turned up at Waitrose to find my orange flavoured side of salmon for Christmas lunch couldn't be found. They did give me a free side of salmon off the fish counter with some oranges for garnish, the cooking instructions they made up on the spot were totally off though. Last year turned up at a different supermarket, a northern only supermarket, on Christmas Eve to find they didn't have my lobster and the piece of gammon I got was not the festive one I ordered. I think I got like £5 off my shopping, wasn't much. Made the same order this year, hoping for better luck. I reckon it happens a lot.

LittleOwl153 · 19/12/2025 21:30

There were plenty in Tesco and Asda today dated 26th onwards.

madaboutpurple · 19/12/2025 21:31

Farm foods seem to have plenty ,but so do all the supermarkets. You should be able to get one that is suitable.

Tessisme · 19/12/2025 21:34

This thread is excellent entertainment. All the outrage and marching and sabre rattling over a turkey. Yet if someone has a terrible experience at their GP surgery or at the hospital, more often than not they’re told to suck it up. With sarcasm aplenty. Unbelievable🤣🤣🤣

Buffypaws · 19/12/2025 21:35

Lol fair

ReadingSoManyThreads · 19/12/2025 21:35

Oh god, definitely don't buy a supermarket turkey!

I'm sure if you call your other local butchers or farms that do turkeys you'll get one no problem! We buy directly from a farm and they always have a few left over.

XWKD · 19/12/2025 21:40

That happened to us. The roulades were free though. Apparently they were nicer than turkey normally is. I don't eat it, so I can't say.

CandyCaneKisses · 19/12/2025 21:41

There’s no need to leave a poor review even they’ve offered the refund and an alternative.
