Middle aged spread - what to do?

Was just looking at this photo of myself and I am a bit alarmed by this tummy pooch. I'm at a fairly low weight, but I am sure my middle used to be more slender. Or are my clothes unflattering? Should I be doing more core work?

There's no going back, unfortunately. I'm so disappointed in these ugly engagement photos. All I can see is the pooch.

Well just make sure you are happy with the wedding outfit.

In reality you will probably look back on the engagement photo and think you looked tiny when you and DH are sitting happily married on your 20th wedding anniversary eating out of a KFC bucket and both wearing elasticated waistbands.

Pedallleur · 18/12/2025 20:47

It's ageing. Your body burns energy less. You need to change your eating habits, meal sizes even cut down and do some/more exercise. Also accept it will happen.

JaquelineHide · 18/12/2025 21:00

That's quite obviously a photo from an advert 🙄

Is it? How do you know?

MidnightMusing5 · 18/12/2025 21:32

That pooch is the least of your problems. I would be more concerned about your lack of overall muscle tone.

You’re welcome ☺️

😱

Engagement photos my foot. Who takes engagement photos anyway in those clothes and that pose and backdrop.

It is just 'OP's lame cover to match her story to the clearly posed photo shoot for an advert.

Is that page 184 of the 1988 Kay’s catalogue?

Semihiker · 18/12/2025 23:02

What you are fighting is called visceral fat, it's inside with your organs. Look into a ketosis diet, it will stop your body from turning your high carb diet into fat and get rid of the belly. You're early enough to get a hold of it now. I fought weight for 17 years and a keto diet has completely changed my life.

The lack of a head is the more concerning surely?

I already eat very, very few carbs. I'm probably on the cusp of an eating disorder, maybe leading to this kind of neurosis

Yeah I think you do need a reassessment op. It's surely a photo of a happy day. That's the important bit. Focus on what is important.

I'm struggling to imagine why she'd bother?

It's just so difficult to find time to move 😭

I never thought I would say that...but work is demanding, my daughter's father is an abusive arse, and I feel squeezed from every direction all the time.

Just ignore that post op.

bridgetreilly · 19/12/2025 01:35

That is how women are supposed to look when slightly bent at the waist. I really think you may need some counselling, OP, if you think this is evidence you need to lose weight.

You'd be surprised at how few carbs it takes to raise your insulin and convert all that into visceral belly fat. Insulin is the "bully" hormone in your body. It can and will take over if you're not careful.

Hilarious!

XenoBitch · 19/12/2025 03:14

I think you look fine. A slight pooch is normal. We are packing an uterus in there after all, unlike men.

Horses7 · 19/12/2025 06:13

JaneJeffer · 18/12/2025 14:25

Who’s that you’re holding hands with Barry?

Love this - especially as these ads are my favourites. Hope OP gets it too!

FancyNewt · 19/12/2025 06:24

You look great op. You're definitely being over critical.

Happilyobtuse · 19/12/2025 06:31

Hey you look fine! Wear a dress next time and always check profile if it bothers you so much. Most people look at the expressions in the faces of people to judge if it is a good photograph. I doubt anyone has even noticed your tummy. It looks perfectly normal. Also how old exactly are you?!

handsdownthebest · 19/12/2025 07:01

radiatordrama · 18/12/2025 17:22

I guess I want to look better than normal due to the whole middle aged spread thing? Unless you're saying that this is inevitable and it's impossible to fight biology?

Well it will spread if you let it.
I'm 61 and have never had 'middle-aged spread'.
I work out and eat sensibly most of the time. I enjoy being slim and have always refused to buy a bigger size.
