I need some ideas for Christmas for a gym loving 22yr old please.

I have some gym shark items but is there anything else you take to make your experience easier / better / special.

Many thanks

I don't wear gloves - I want the calluses. But I do use chalk - a bottle or two of liquid chalk would be far better than gloves if she lifts weights (real ones, not cardio bunny or pump weights).

It's obviously a very personal thing, I don't think you can speak for everyone here.

I lift 'real weights' and wear gloves because 1. I have a ring that doesn't come off which pinches and gives me a blister if I don't wear them and 2. I absolutely do not want callouses!

oh the lifting strap snobbishness! Grip strength blah blah cheating blah. Always said by men with hands twice the size of mine. Gym weights, like everything else in this world, is built for an average man. I'd like to see those guys gripping bars twice as thick as their current ones, they'll be using staps/gloves in 5 seconds flat.

Does she like Lululemon? A voucher?

This is why I started wearing gloves when I got up to the bigger dumbbells. I don’t know if it would have turned into a callus but I do know it was annoying & sore.

Obviously it’s personal preference. That’s a nasty bit of damaged skin so yes of course you don’t want it irritated.

@ChocoChocoLatte what about an app subscription? There are some really good gym programmes that work out at between £90 and £120 per year. (I use Stronger by the Day, for example).

We don’t really know what your recipient (DD?) does at the gym …

Wow there are a lot of gym snobs on this thread! I never realised that I am likely being sneered at for not lifting "real" weights - is there a weight below which they are just pretend?

Honestly, what's wrong with supporting and encouraging each other, whatever way we choose to work out?

It’s fully recovered now 😀.

And yes, the really big questions are what they do & what they think of gloves, straps etc.

I live 10 mins walk from my gym so I change & shower at home but when I used to use the gym near work, my microfibre towel was wonderful.

I love a good gym set. Adanola or ASOS does some nice dupes.
I don’t scrimp on trainers and will always wear the type for the exercise I’m doing. Ie weight lifting ones (as that’s the thing I do in the gym) I see people wearing running trainers or even adidas sambas for bodypump for example and just cringe at how uncomfortable and unsupportive that must be!

I lift weights bare foot. I also do squats and lunges bare foot. Much better for balance (my pt originally got me to do them bare foot as I was struggling).

I used to do boxing/kick boxing bare foot as well.

I don't need some gym snob cringing at my expense when I know what I'm doing and why I'm doing it like that. They should mind their own business.

I go to the gym, but I just eat ordinary food, don't do protein shakes etc which I think are just a fad. I think you need to sneak a peek at what she already uses, and get something in that range. It really is very personal and individual. Anything high end would be totally wasted on me.

ChocoChocoLatte · 19/12/2025 21:45

You lot are amazing thank you.

Shes recently bought trainers so have left that alone. I ordered some Gym Shark stuff & some towels for them both and a bag for her.

the rest she can figure out herself!

Off to change my user name to bitchmittens now 😂
