Sorry for weird title.
Just wondering if there are any songs, when heard unexpectedly, has the power to hit you in the gut and render you an emotional wreck.
I heard Separate Lives (Phil Collins/Marilyn Martin) earlier today and the emotions it brought up are still with me now.

Songs eh. Powerful stuff.

ABBA - Slipping Through My Fingers. God even thinking about it makes me cry.

Also Queen - The Show Must Go On - don't know how he sang like that so close to the end.

@Sausagedogsarethewurst I remember that well - I was at the closing ceremony and cried my eyes out at that. Don't know how on earth he did that.

I think everyone will have different associations for different songs.

Eva Cassidy’s Fields of Gold was played at a close family member’s funeral and will make me weep.

Bigger Than the Whole Sky by Taylor Swift - don’t know what she personally was writing it about, but for me it’s about miscarriage.
And I actually can’t listen to Ronan by Taylor Swift. It was written using words from a blog by a woman whose 3 yr old son died of cancer. She’s credited as a writer (Swift did it with her permission) and all proceeds from the song go to charity.

All of these are the same for me as well (both artists) there are so many of Taylor’s songs that just absolutely hit me either from the feeling of nostalgia or it being bittersweet or because they are devastating 🫶

(Ps - love the name, another TS reference right?! On that note don’t even get me started on the amount of tears shed to TTPD album whilst we’re at it).

Forever Autumn by Justin Hayward.

It was September when my wife died six years ago.
The whole song hits me emotionally but the line 'now you're not here' just completely floors me.

Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman. It gets me every time. There’s something so wistful about the melody.

hinterkitten · 17/12/2025 23:20

I’d heard the song Wires by Athlete many times and liked it, but never had an emotional reaction. Then, ever since I had DD (almost 10 years ago) I can’t hear it without crying. It’s not even like I can personally relate to it (DD was an easy, healthy birth/newborn)

The Long and Winding Road by the Beatles. I chose it for my Dad’s funeral. We had a very difficult and fractured relationship but when he died and this was played at the service I felt so angry and heartbroken in ways that nobody could prepare me for.

on the flip side Tonight Tonight by the Smashing Pumpkins that we played in the car the night I went to hospital for the day induction for the birth of my first child. As a first time mother it perfectly captured the combination of thrilling excitement and utter trepidation at what as to come. He’s in secondary school now and we listen to it together.

The power of love, Frankie goes to Hollywood. My dad used to sing this to me. He’s still alive but we live countries apart and everytime I hear it I realise how much I miss him.

PermanentTemporary · 17/12/2025 23:50

Cranes in the Sky by Solange Knowles. I heard it late one night about a year after my Dh died and it hit me like a truck.

The Rifle’s Spiral by the Shins. I listened to a lot of music in that bereaved period, and the emotional level was almost like being a teenager again, I fell for a whole bunch of bands. Something about this track is unbearably melancholy.

Thunderpants88 · 17/12/2025 23:53

Easy by Camila Cabello - about an and finding it easy to love a women who is listing to all the criticisms she has of herself. It is an amazing song.

Also “First Man” also be Canila Cabello. Do yourself a favour and watch the Grammy performance. She was suppose to perform her biggest hit and instead surprised everyone by singing it straight to her Dad about him. I showed my husband and it had tears streaming down his face.

Bowie's Kooks.
We were driving through Europe, grieving a recent miscarriage. This came on the radio and we both started singing along. Feeling sad and raw but also hopeful. Eighteen months later, we sang it again when bringing our newborn home from hospital. When I hear it now it's still freighted with loss, hope and joy.

Will you stay in our lover's story?
If you stay, you won't be sorry
'Cause we believe in you
Soon you'll grow, so take a chance
With a couple of Kooks
Hung up on romancing...
