What on earth is a Labubu?

ForLoveNotMoney · 02/12/2025 22:57

My child has asked for one for Christmas. What are they? They look like expensive, furry wastes of space 😂

Any suggestions for a cheap option, suitable for a 7 year old boy?

Thank you in advance

Vinted?

JudgeBread · 03/12/2025 06:49

Aaah they're the Beanie Babies of this generation. I still have all my Beanies so I can't really judge the kids for having a similarly stupid, expensive obsession.

I think they're a bit creepy to be honest but half my nieces and nephews want them this year so I'm indoctrinating myself into Labubu lore. Following because they're fucking expensive so keeping my eyes on any threads that might have some bargains 😁

No, they aren’t!

I got mine on the pop Mart website @ForLoveNotMoney for £18.00 I think, the other week.
They are hard to get hold of though, but I signed up to their site and was notified when they came back in stock. I managed to get them but they do go out of stock really quickly.

This, but I was surprised how easy it was to get hold of last week now that a lot of the fuss has died down. I had to sign up for a stock alert on the Pop Mart website but it came back in later that day and I was able to get a Big Into Energy blind box that evening for £18, delivered two days later.

I was thinking of buying a fake when prices were higher but 75% of the imported knock-offs aren’t meeting safety standards with hazardous chemicals, as PPs have said. You’re giving it to a kid - don’t do it.

And yes - ugly and irritatingly over hyped but the Beanie Babies and Cabbage Patch dolls illustrate our generations were much the same!

nomeds · 03/12/2025 08:51

Pop mart are the UK stockists, definitely don't get a fake one for a 7 year old.

TY78910 · 03/12/2025 08:56

I second not getting a fake one. I got one off amazon a couple of weeks back from their popmart store for £18. They also had them in the entertainer.

Possibly would have given me nightmares as a child...!

What on earth is a Labubu?
ForLoveNotMoney · 03/12/2025 09:05

Ok, noted, thank you! Real one it is. I’m currently in hospital so have plenty of time on my hands to look.
will update!

Thank you all again

If you get a "real" one you have to scan the QR code to check if they're real or not. There's a huge amount of identical fake ones.

Redhairandhottubs · 03/12/2025 09:13

They’re ugly, but I had many equally ugly toys when I was a kid - anyone remember Chickaboo? Cabbage patch dolls? Trolls? Kids have always liked weird things 🤣

PInkyStarfish · 03/12/2025 09:24

Lookalikes here that are very cheap.

Pwrsonally I would buy the real thing but if you are on a limited budget these may be suitable. I have no idea if they look like the real thing as I’ve never heard of them before!

Real Labubus can only be bought from PopMart, they are about £18.
My friend was going to buy one from a reseller for about £100! I popped in to my local PopMart and they had them behind the counter, so I got one for her.
You will find them at ridiculous prices but if you can get to a proper shop, they are easy enough to get at a reasonable price.

Yes, get him a real one. Good parent. 😃 Don't mean to be arrogant or patronising!
Do any of you remember Monchichi? Labubu is
a scarier furry waste of space. The other ones had a nice face, although some were a bit creepy.
It's crazy the Labubu "project" is now worth about 3 billion.

In the future when they are excavating the landfill sites. They are really going to wonder about us- cabbage patch dolls AND labubu? Were these people mad? Yes. Yes they were.

Don’t forget Boglins (of which I had one in the 90’s)

Shmoigel · 03/12/2025 09:41

Check out the Hacoo app for decent fakes

DreamingOfLivingInAChateau · 03/12/2025 10:16

creepy little things that remind me of when the gremlins got wet!

Monchichis are still very popular!! Took my daughter into Urban Outfitters the other day and they have the dolls and clothes for them!

PeatandDieselfan · 03/12/2025 14:30

Real ones have 9 teeth, according to my 8 year old.

My mother in law wanted me to get her one a couple of months ago. God knows why, but she is lovely so I scoured the shops. Had no idea how hard it would be to get a 'real' one. In the end, I bought a fake key ring one from a tourist shop in Barmouth for 3£. Don't th
ink it's any more unsafe than any other piece of plastic junk. Not convinced an original would be any safer - it's all just more landfill however much cash you want to hand over.

Boglins yes they were also horrible.

Yea well trends. I remember the Cabbage Patch doll craze and thought they were really ugly.

They were hideous! But my dd2, maybe 7 at the time, wanted one…. We’ve still got it, lurking in a toy box for the Gdcs to (not) play with.

Lostxmasfairy · 03/12/2025 17:31

Poundland had some fake labubu the other day.

They find smashed 'Venus' figurines in prehistoric rubbish dumps. The archaeologists & anthropologists hypothesise that the goddess images were created for specific festivals, after which they were ceremonially broken, the fertility icons were reverently kept in the home until they'd had enough children, when they were ceremonially broken ...

... Future historians will be competing to come up with mystical theories on the shape of a religion that worshipped trolls, tamagotchi, beanie babies and labubu 😂

DilemmaDelilah · 03/12/2025 21:48

So I know what a Labubu is.... but I simply cannot understand why anyone would want one! Ugly things with scary faces. Just why?!
